Dead Island and Call of Juarez developer Techland has announced its next project: a co-op hack-and-slash named Hellraid.

Hellraid will launch "later this year" for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 - as yet, there's no mention of Wii U or next-gen consoles.

Techland boasts that Hellraid is "two games in one" - you can play the game in a story-driven single-player mode, stabbing the denizens of hell by yourself, or alternatively you can summon up to three friends to poke evil beasties with you.

Players then compete for points and take part in randomly-generated challenges.

Expect looting, questing, weapon crafting, boss fights, armour customisation, character development and other RPG fare.

It's a bit like Dead Island then, but more medieval than Mediterranean.

Techland's first new IP since the Dead Island series looks to recapture the magic of '90s PC gaming, evoking classics such as Quake, Hexen, Diablo and Heretic in its four player co-operative hack n'slash that's wrapped up in a dark fantasy setting.

"We want you to feel that the game is made by guys in their '30s," Hellraid producer Marcin Kruczkiewicz told our colleagues at Eurogamer Poland. "You can't forget about the past. As young enthusiasts we enjoyed the first Quake, second Hexen or Diablo, and all that remains in us somewhere."

Hellraid offers up a selection of four classes, Warrior, Mage, Paladin and Rogue, and encourages them to work alongside each other as they fight through hordes of enemies. There are interlocking abilities - wizard can cast shields on allied players, or teleport around, and the combat system is built upon a series of magical abilities that include fire, telekinesis and lightening.

The open-world structure of Dead Island has been pared back slightly, with a series of open-ended maps rather than one all-encompassing world. Hellraid also offers a stripped-back leveling system, with experience points unlocking branches on each character's skill tree.

Developer Q&A:

Q:What is Hellraid?

A: We’re calling Hellraid a first-person co-op slasher. We invented this genre to capture the idea behind our game which blends elements of classic hack & slash titles with a more advanced combat system based on timing and precision, RPG’s, shooters and multiplayer games into one unique experience seen in very immersive, first-person perspective.

Q:Will gamers experience Hellraid only in co-op? What is the main difference between playing solo and in co-op?

A: Hellraid can be experienced both in single-player and in co-operation. While playing solo you explore the world, complete quests, gather loot and develop your character. In co-operation tension rises when you struggle to achieve mission goals while competing with your friends for points granted for each kill, team-plays and automatically generated challenges throughout the game.

Q:What does the game in Hellraid look like?

A: In Hellraid you travel between levels using a web of magic portals. Each level can be played an unlimited number of times to complete the story campaign, side quests and to defeat forces of evil with friends while competing for experience, points, rewards and places on leaderboards. During the game players can use a variety of melee, ranged and magical weapons. Combat is expanded with a set of unique active skills for each character class which gives the team additional tactical capabilities while searching for treasure, completing objectives, avoiding deadly traps, fighting the hordes of enemies and boss battles.

Q:Will gamers be able to develop their characters, or customize the weapons and armor?

A: Each of the four character classes available in Hellraid - Warrior, Mage, Paladin and Rogue - will have their own skill tree that can be developed during the game. Along with that players can customize their weapons using an advanced crafting system or change their combat capabilities and appearance with armor that can be bought in shops, traded between the players or found during the game.

Q:Who or what is Game Master?

A: Game Master is a complex system inspired by pen and paper role-playing games that makes each play through of Hellraid a different, completely new experience. In co-operation mode, Game Master carefully selects competitive challenges for players and awards the best ones at the end of each level. It changes where and how you and your friends complete quests, placement, numbers and types of enemies you encounter as well as deploying treasure chests and loot.

Q:Will Game Master work in single-player as well?

A: Yes, Game Master will alter the experience in single-player the same way it does in co-op but without the competitive challenges which are unique for playing with your friends.

Q:How long is Hellraid and when it will be released?

A: Thanks to Game Master and the varied experiences that it provides, Hellraid will give players hundreds of hours of pure fun. The game will be released in 2013 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Looks and sounds a lot like Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, but with less kicking and more slashing. I like there being attacks you can't block, but I hope a shield will still reduce the damage somewhat so that it doesn't feel like it's made out of paper. The backwards dodge seemed to have really long range, basically being a "disengage from the enemy!" panic button instead of "taking a quick step backwards to only barely dodge a lethal swing". Dodging sideways and diagonally backwards looked about right. Player health seemed really high: I'd want to die in ONE of those heavy overhead swings toward the end — but then again he was spamming pots and this was a demo version.

I hope they decide to add co-op story mode, but what I'll lose sleep over is if there'll be any fights that demand teamwork, that are impossible to beat alone. I dream of a monster you just can't deal with in melee — HE'LL GRAB YOU BY THE THROAT, HOLD YOU UP IN THE AIR AND TEAR YOUR FUCKING GUTS OUT WITH HIS FREE HAND!! INSTA-KILL!!! (an ideal moment to force whimpering, followed by screaming, out of the avatar's mouth) — so that whoever draws aggro has no choice but to run for his godforsaken life, praying his companion(s) will use e.g. the environment to deal damage fast enough to save him.
