The next game from the developers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent is sci-fi horror title SOMA for PlayStation 4 and PC, Frictional Games has announced.

“For the last three years, we have been working on a game called SOMA,” Frictional Games director Thomas Grip said on the PlayStation Blog. “All that time, this project has remained a secret — it’s a great relief to finally be able to talk about it. This game is by far the most ambitious and thrilling project we have ever undertaken.”

SOMA is a first-person sci-fi horror game. Players take on the role of a normal, “very exposed” person trapped in a world of nightmares. Grip dubs it a game about “exploration, survival, and immersing [the player] inside an interactive narrative.”

Development on Frictional’s previous games began with core gameplay before moving on to setting and theme. With SOMA, the developer “couldn’t let the themes be an afterthought.” The game discusses the subject of consciousness, posing questions such as “Can machines be conscious?” and “Do we have free will?”

“[These questions] quickly get very disturbing, and is ideal for a futuristic horror setting,” said Grip. “It is the kind of sci-fi that we want to make.

Grip promises the theme will be an “integral part of gameplay” and “not just fluff.” Part of this is represented through the game’s monsters, each of which are an embodiment of an aspect of the game’s themes.

“In order to survive the journey, you need to understand how they work and in the process take on extremely unsettling subjects,” Grip said.

SOMA is not just “another carnival ride of cheap scares,” according to Grip, but a game meant to “chill you to your core” and “confront you with questions about your very existence.” It is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC in 2015.

That’s right, our next game will be set deep below the water’s surface – at the bottom of the sea. It was a decision which came very swiftly; Jens (co-founder of Frictional Games) and I sort of decided it on a whim during a meet-up. But it’s something that had been brewing inside us for a long time. Most of our earth is covered in ocean, and yet it’s something that we know very little about. It is an incredibly hostile environment filled with strange creatures, and it is right on our door step.

SOMA2.jpg

Most of the ocean is devoid of sunlight and inhospitable to us. The differences in pressure between the surface and even a modest depth of 100 meters is enough to turn a human into mush. That pressure, that depth, is nothing compared to the true ocean deeps. And as if this isn’t enough, the creatures living there seem like they’re from another world. Gigantic squid, luminescent fish and creatures that are all mouths and teeth are only the start. If you dive down any distance you enter into a realm of monsters.

The ocean is an alien world, and we’ve only scratched the surface. We feel it’s the perfect place to explore in a horror game.

When SOMA is released on PS4 in 2015, we invite you to take a deep breath and follow us down into the darkness.

SOMA Release Date And Gameplay Trailer

After almost five years of blood, sweat and tears we can finally make the following announcement:

SOMA, our upcoming sci-fi horror game, will be released on the 22nd September this fall on PS4 and PC.

And to celebrate that, here are 12 minutes of uncut gameplay footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syhcF0Mx0j0

Here are three quick bits of trivia about the video:

1) When the video starts we are about 1 hour into the game.

2) The protagonist is not an amnesiac. He has an established past, knows who he is, but isn't at all sure about the situation he's in.

3) There are lots more things to explore in this level than what's shown in the video. For instance, you can avoid the robot attack completely by acting differently.

That's it for now! We hope you like the footage and we're looking forward hearing what you think about the game after release!
