BioWare adds new "Spark" teaser to "You've Been Chosen" website

Andy Chalk wrote:A new teaser entitled "Spark" has appeared on BioWare's "You've Been Chosen" website. It's slightly longer than the "Nightmare" video that turned up last week, but unfortunately it's not any more informative.

A young man sits alone at a table in an empty diner, drawing circles on a napkin with a black marker. It is nighttime, and raining. His phone rings. The caller is unknown; he ignores it. It immediately rings again, and again he dismisses the call. Then a third time, and now he's annoyed. Why won't this person leave him alone?

Suddenly, lightning! Zappo-KABLAM! Beef fried rice everywhere!

The hooded stranger watches.

I actually quite enjoy a good videogame tease, even when I have absolutely no idea what it means, as is the case here. But it seems very likely related to BioWare's collaboration with Failbetter Games that was announced in February: The whole "You've Been Chosen" thing is deeply weird, as you'd expect from the studio behind Fallen London, and BioWare's Aaryn Flynn has already confirmed that the game isn't being developed by either of its Canadian studios, nor is it the "completely new IP" teased at E3.

The video is accompanied by a cryptic message, slightly changed from the one that preceded it. "Do you know they are watching? Your power is rising. Cologne, Germany. 08.13.14." The obvious implication is that all, or at least some, will be revealed at Gamescom, which runs from August 13 to 17 in—you guessed it—Cologne.

Today in Germany during EA's Gamescom briefing, the publisher's BioWare Austin studio announced Shadow Realms, a multiplayer-focused online game, launching in 2015 for PC. This is the game BioWare has been teasing for the past two weeks.

Set in a modern fantasy world, Shadow Realms is an "online-only" RPG that will offer cooperative 4v1 gameplay, BioWare Austin general manager Jeff Hickman said during the briefing. Four players can fight against an enemy known as the Shadowlord, or you can play as the Shadowlord.

"This game brings us back to our roots in the realm of classic Pen and Paper RPG, but also delivers something that’s completely new and innovative for our fans," Hickman said in a subsequent press release. "Shadow Realms is a new BioWare RPG that has the hallmarks of all BioWare games with a rich story, a unique world setting, and deep combat progression, but built as an interactive experience that evolves the genre and broadens the appeal to online gamers all over the world."

Concerning the story for Shadow Realms, the game takes place as heroes on Earth, who did not know they even had magical powers, are being awakened and recruited to fight against a force known as the Shadow Legions of Embra. The story will be told over various episodes, playing out over time like a TV show, BioWare says.

You can sign up for access to the game's closed alpha period today by visiting the game's website. The website also contains loads of details about Shadow Realms' classes, gameplay, and more.

The thread's main title should be changed to reflect that BioWare announced You've Been Chosen as ShadowRealms.

Development on BioWare Austin’s four-versus-one online game Shadow Realms has ceased, the studio announced.

The company provided no real reason for the cancellation, other than there being “other projects for the team to work on.”

BioWare Austin will continue to focus on Star Wars: The Old Republic, for which it has “great plans” to expand this year.

Additionally, for those who registered for the Shadow Realms closed alpha, BioWare Austin is working on a way to thank players who signed up.

Today I’m sharing some important news about Shadow Realms and our BioWare Austin studio.

We’ve made the decision to not move forward with development of Shadow Realms. We fully recognize that this news is disappointing to some of our fans, so I want to explain more behind this decision.

While the team did amazing work on the game concept and we got lots of great feedback from our fans at events and through other game testing, right now there are other projects for the team to work on within the BioWare studios for the coming year and beyond. We’ve got an incredibly talented team here at the Austin studio, and they are excited and already deep on new projects within the BioWare family, ones that will make some great BioWare games even better.

These include additional ongoing enhancements to the award-winning Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as the next game in the Mass Effect series and other new IP.

But the biggest focus for our team in BioWare Austin will be on Star Wars: The Old Republic. As every Star Wars fan knows, this is a massive year in the Star Wars universe. We have some great plans for expanding this epic game this year, and look forward to sharing the news about those plans with our players in the coming weeks.

For all the people that registered for the Shadow Realms Closed Alpha, we’re working on a way to say thank-you for signing up. To all those players that gave us feedback at Gamescom and PAX, and those that shared their thoughts and impressions in the past months, we thank you for being part of the conversation.
