I signed up for Galbadia Hotel, which is like this huge depository of anime and videogame OSTs, they have seriously reams of awesome stuff you can't get in the states, etc. etc. I will post my link (which does the whole earn points get quicker downloads), the site seems on the up and up, and I basically use it for stuff I can get or refuse to pay $100 for one import CD with one song I like. Check it out, let me know what you think.

Been leaching stuff off that for six months now. It's truly a goldmine.

Having to click through two pages and download each track is a pain in the arse though. Took me an absolute age to get those Nintendo NES soundtracks. There were like 90 tracks in those.

That's why I'm using the point system, two more points and then I can cash it in on one sweet, sweet day of downloading, and I intend to take 24-hour advantage of that.

You should be careful with GH though, some of their soundtracks have incomplete tracks and sometimes of poor quality.

That still hasn't stopped me from getting a SHITload of soundtracks from them.

I like the new Doom a lot. During my first play through, I would've given it a five. Now that I've cleared it though, I would have to agree with a four.

icycalm
I am thinking of putting a track from it on the mix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FNCfPT9B10
I like how the armor looks so close to the original Doom's
It's like a perfectly HD version of it
and the same goes for the track

quash
The OST is awesome
That track is one of the best too

icycalm
If you like another more link it

quash
Trying to find it
I don't know any of the track names lol
https://youtu.be/pNkQMtZAMAw
This is the one

icycalm
Not enough of a melody in there for me to enjoy it outside the game, but I bet it feels awesome in the game

quash
True enough. The intro is several minutes long lol
Are there any MGR tracks yet?

icycalm
In the mix? One

quash
Armstrong's theme?
That's my best guess lol

icycalm
No, Rules of Nature
I think I considered Armstrong's theme at some point, but they fuck it up at some point
There are tracks like that that are awesome up to a point, and then drop the ball
All of Jeremy Soule's tracks are like this (edited)
That's why there are none in the mix
lemme hear Armstrong's theme again and I'll tell you the exact second it fucks up
the entire middle of the song is shit

quash
Where it keeps repeating the riff?

icycalm
No, where he's singing
from about 1.5 mins forward
so shit I can't even finish the song
I don't think I've ever listened to all of it
the first few lines of his song are okay, but he keeps going and going, and it gets worse, and then a "solo" type thing comes on, and the music is just noise by this point
it's unlistenable

quash
I'll have to listen to it with this perspective later. I was always annoyed at the poor balancing of the vocals in that song, but liked the rest.

icycalm
don't mind my opinion
80% of what people post as "great vg music" in the forum is unlistenable to me
if they post one track that I can listen all the way through they are heroes to me

quash
Haha
Are you a fan of Koshiro at all?

icycalm
no idea who he is

quash
He did the Bare Knuckle games

icycalm
oh ok

quash
As well as the Wangan Midnight games

icycalm
I always see his full name
that's why I didn't recognize it
It's not the same without the Yuzo
Have you never checked out the mix?
It's on the frontpage, and it has like a dozen of his tracks (edited)
most picked by me

quash
I think he's pretty hit and miss, but when he gets it right he nails it

icycalm
If he is hit and miss then everyone else making game music is miss and miss
Of course he makes less inspired stuff, but I don't know of anyone with a higher hit ratio

quash
Well I am also factoring in his later works, which a lot of people tend to ignore for some reason

icycalm
Show me one composer with a higher hit/miss ratio, if you can
I am inc. all his works

quash
Daisuke Ishiwatari maybe

icycalm
Is all the stuff on GG his?

quash
Yes

icycalm
Because most of it is rubbish

quash
Also BB

icycalm
From what I've heard, only 2 or 3 of his tracks sound good to me
While Koshiro has dozens
Again, that's my opinion
But I listen to real metal, and his aping is pitiful, most of the time

quash
I do think he tends to focus too much on aping as you put it

icycalm
He has no other choice
All game composers ape
If they could innovate they'd be real composers

quash
Right, but he straight up steals riffs sometimes

icycalm
They all do
Same with movie soundtrack people
Stealing left and right from real composers
Classical composers most of all
And it's the same with game illustrators
Same with game actors
That's how advanced art works
And the cinematographers steal from painters
No way you can reinvent the wheel when you are part of a huge machine, and no reason to

icycalm
It would be stupid to not steal
I really have to finish the Set Theory essay

quash
Right. I get what you're saying. I just don't see anyone else taking Led Zeppelin songs start to finish and calling them theirs.

icycalm
He did that?

quash
Yeah, Potemkin's theme

icycalm
Could have just licensed the song

quash
Almost the entire thing

icycalm
The only thing I care about at the end of the day is if the track -- or asset of whatever kind -- is beneficial to the game
I let lawyers handle the rest

quash
Indeed. Insects and their laws.

icycalm
lol, I had forgotten about that
Plus, Koshiro has range
Ishiwatari keeps doing the same thing over and over
and when this thing is so inferior to the real composers, I just can't bring myself to respect it very much
While with Koshiro you'd be hard pressed to say what he's trying to ape most of the time
What is the Bare Knuckle or Super Shinobi OST aping? (edited)
For lack of a better term, he seems to have more "soul" to me
More stories to tell
While when I think of Ishiwatari I think of a huge mass of samey jumbled subpar guitar riffs
He does have his moments, and I have a some tracks in the mix from him, but I wouldn't put him anywhere near Koshiro
Actually my favorite OST composers are the dudes who did PA and Psyvariar 2
Nothing else that I have heard comes close to those soundtracks
Those are genuinely good music

quash
Oh Psyvariar 2
That game does have really good music
I bought the Xbox version a few years ago
Didn't expect to get so hooked on it
