From Platinum Games and Hideki Kamiya, the director of the original DMC. If you're tired of fugly, soulless, boring Western action games this could be something for you.

Hello everyone. It's been a long time, hasn't it?

I can finally let you all in on the details of my latest project, BAYONETTA. BAYONETTA is a world-class 3D action game for the world at large, the summation of all of our technology and know-how here at PlatinumGames

Speaking of 3D action games, I can’t help but remember a time nearly seven years ago, and my first completely original game, Devil May Cry. My own immaturity towards game design filled it with straight-forward, pure ideas. It has become my defining work, a game that drew the roadmap for all 3D action games that followed.

Now, seven years later, I’ve decided to return to 3D action. I’m sure some of you are asking... Why is he making another 3D action game?

After DMC, I went on to develop Viewtiful Joe. In pursuing a new way of creating an action game within the limitations of 2D stages, it was a game that was ahead of its time. It was a game that spawned a love-hate response amongst users; however, as a game developed by a small team, its flaws can be forgiven as a bold experiment that achieved its initial goals.

Okami was a change of gears. My attempt to make a “Nature Adventure” game based upon the theme of healing, it also represented an effort to broaden my own personal abilities. Even though it is labeled an adventure, we succeeded in making a grand journey that represented a progression for us in every way, from its text-heavy story to our trademark brand of action controls.

With these two completely different games, I sought out the new, making them as groundbreaking as possible; however, I never forgot my love of action games. In fact, my love grew stronger. So once development of Okami was completed, it marked a turning point, and a return to the Devil of seven years past – a return to my starting point of 3D action. Once again, the fires of creation were lit inside me.

How have 3D action games evolved since we blazed a new trail with DMC? Can you even go so far as to say they’ve evolved?

Seven years ago, we put everything we had into Devil May Cry. But since then, like the hands of time for the 3D action genre were frozen at that moment, it seems like the drive to push users further has stopped. There is so much more that should be done now. And we are the only ones who seem up to the task. This is the spark that has lit the fire within me.

“Pushing 3D Action to a New Dimension”

With that goal in mind, we are going to set the clock on 3D action back into motion. Where we once gave birth to true 3D action, we return to unleash a new truth on the world. A truth only we can create.

We will prove this with BAYONETTA.

Believe us. It will be worth the wait.

Man, I love how confident Kamiya sounds.

I've read an interview/preview in EGM. The game sounds fantastic and I can't wait to play it.

Apparently, the protagonist's clothes are made out of her hair. Some of her more powerful attacks involve her summoning monsters that are made of that same hair, and the more powerful the attacks the less clothing is left covering her body. Hah.

First Ninja Blade, now this. Expect a Greek mythology action game to be announced soon. This is going exactly like the flooding of the WWII FPS market. I hope the new kids on the action block at least try to improve current genre shortcomings...

Looks very interesting, but to me, this sounds like the "We have big ideas, and aren't afraid to use them, and it will be awesome" marketing campaign.

The last time I heard that was when No More Heroes came out, and I'm still bitter from the experience. Granted, I trust DMC's creator more than I do Suda51, but I'm still wary of this.

le sigh, what's with the character design?

It even has a stripping naked transformation scene...

For some reason, I thought Bayonetta would involve a Lee-Enfield with a bayonet on the end with furious diesel punk melee combat in an alternate WWI universe... With all the tropes of 1920's pulp fiction...

Lost World, Cthulhu and more... damn it would have rocked.

God of War III? I wonder what's going on with that...

What do you see as shortcomings? Personally, I was left 100% satisfied by the original DMC and Ninja Gaiden. No matter how hard I think about it, the only improvements I can come up with is more of everything (better graphics, more moves, enemies, etc.)

As for this game, yeah, character design is not good. The bitch is ugly, for one. Annoying facial expressions too. The Oneechanbara hobags have way more charm. But technically the graphics look sharp, there's lots of color and detailed locations, etc. so we'll see.

I've uploaded the original trailer in 720p, and a direct feed version of the one Josh linked:

Trailer 1 JP (14 MB)
TGS 2008 trailer (67 MB)

And some more (revealing, etc.) screens:

There's been a new trailer up on the site for some time now, and on Sega's YT channel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDKlSmM7PEE&fmt=18

It's looking pretty nice, although I'm not sure I like what seems to be a rather hard turn towards wide open areas instead of enclosed spaces, but perhaps those are just the stages they have finished and there'll be many smaller ones too?

The engine's looking great now! I see an Otogi-inspired dragon boss too. In fact I see many bosses, and hope that each of them will be unique. Hopefully Platinum Games will not follow in the footsteps of Capcom vis-à-vis boss recycling (let alone stage recycling as in DMC4...)

This is looking much more exciting now.

It looks like the first Devil May Cry, I only hope the mechanics will be similar... or better.

Kamiya is great, he has demonstrated it.

New dose of pure high definition ass kicking: http://www.gamersyde.com/news_7894_en.html

And some more "complete" (or "less trailer-ish", if you prefer) fighting sequences showing the game running almost constantly at 60 fps, Devil May Cry 1 style (at least on the Xbox 360): http://ve3d.ign.com/videos/48162/Xbox-3 ... play-Movie

What's up with the 60fps DMC1 comment? -- do the other DMCs run at 30fps?

Oh, it's only that I'm under the impression that the first game has a more steadily high framerate than the third one. But yeah, I totally forgot about the fourth.

As some fans may already know, Bayonetta features a "Very Easy Automatic" mode that essentially plays the game for you. Director Hideki Kamiya decided to show that mode off on the official site, posting a video of what he jokingly called "Mommy Mode."

"Yep. This is the power of Automatic. Automatic can be used on Easy and Very Easy difficulties, and leaves the most complex controls up to the CPU," Kamiya wrote.

"At the controls in this video is character designer Mari Shimazaki. All she is really doing in this video is pressing a single button, the Punch button. She may occasionally be pressing Kick, but only for the Torture Attack events."

According to Kamiya, the Very Easy Automatic Mode is capable of putting the main character in perfect position to attack while triggering various combos. Dodging is a matter of hitting the punch button.

The first comment claims that this kind of thing was in the DMC games, and is not new.

The developers claim the two versions will be the same, but the release looming players looking forward to their spicy witch action on the PS3 are understandably nervous.

Looks very slick -- just like I had imagined DMC4 would look, only with a worse-looking protagonist. And her move/weapon-set seem quite out there... but hopefully they'll work well in practice.

The Fall Harvest post explains that we will finally get a playable demo of Bayonetta on the PS3 at the Tokyo Game Show. The 360 demo I played at PAX was impressive, and I'm hoping the PS3 version shapes up as well.

Tatsuya Minami wrote:With Bayonetta, we created the Xbox 360 version of the game first, and then handed off all the data and other assets to SEGA so they could begin the process of porting Bayonetta to the PS3, giving them advice regarding the porting process along the way and overseeing the progress to ensure that the PS3 version would be the best it could be.

So the PS3 version is a port. And not handled by the original developers. We have been warned.

New trailer from Tokyo Game Show: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/tgs-0 ... etta/56508

And here's some footage of the PS3 version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZAKFT9PJMg

Which we can compare with the 360 one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtSMWMtr2HU

It isn't such a good way to compare, but a little framerate drop can be noticed when summoning Gomorrah.

A new comparison video: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/ps3-3 ... etta/57537

From that one we can see that the PS3 version has some screen tearing.

And from this other one, we can see that the Xbox 360 version seems to be v-locked at 30 frames per second in the cutscenes, while the PlayStation 3 one fluctuates wildly: http://zoome.jp/ps360/zpdia/p/421/56

A through technical comparison of both demos:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... blog-entry

During combat sequences with multiple enemies, the Xbox 360 version can drop to as low as ~40 fps, and there's a good deal of screen tearing. PlayStation 3 is similar, only with about 10-15% less rendered frames.

There has been some buzz on Shoryuken.com about Bayonetta, a lot of people there have pretty high hopes for the game. One of them posted this pretty interesting video of them getting a pure platinum rating through the whole demo, which requires not taking any damage.
