Earth Defense Force 2025, known in Japan as Chikyû Boueigun 4 (地球防衛軍4?, lit. "Earth Defence Forces 4") is a third-person shooter developed by Sandlot, and published by D3 Publisher, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is the follow-up to Earth Defense Force 2017.
The Earth Defense Force, a unified multinational military sponsored by nearly every country, is founded after detecting an impending alien visit in case the aliens prove to be hostile. The year 2017 that probed to be true and the EDF fought against the Ravagers, an alien race that attacked Earth with giant insect-like creatures, UFOs, robots and gigantic, 120 foot tall lizard-like creatures. After defeating the last one in Arizona, eight years later they attack again with new creatures, evolved from their underground nest. Among them is the Retiarius, a spider-like creature that makes gigantic spider-webs, and new flying, winged creatures. In the year 2025, the EDF must protect the Earth again from the alien invaders.
The player takes control of one EDF soldier of the three soldier classes. To fight these alien forces the player can access several weapons in the game, ranging from assault rifles and sniper rifles to rocket launchers, grenades and laser weapons. Only two weapons may be selected for each mission. Some levels also contain vehicles which can be commandeered;[6][7] a tank, a railgun mobile vehicle, a helicopter, a motorcycle with a sidecar and a bipedal mecha are available. The game takes place across levels featuring destructible environments, taking place in settings such as cities. There is no penalty for collateral damage that is inflicted on the environment by the player, for instance buildings will crumble after sustaining a few hits from a rocket launcher or grenade. Other EDF soldiers can be recruited or followed, and attack enemies on sight, as well as provide radio chatter.
There are several difficulty levels. More effective weapons are dropped by the enemies in the game at the higher difficulty levels, encouraging players to repeat the missions. In addition to weapons, armor enhancements which function as permanent maximum health bonuses are dropped along with healing items.

Kaori Takasue wrote:EDF! EDF! EDF! Just shouting out this simple phrase brings back fond memories of Earth Defense Force 2017, and now I’m pumped to share more details about the launch of Earth Defense Force 2025 in February of next year. In particular, what fans can expect from some of the upcoming weapon packs that will be available via pre-order or DLC.
We’ve been on tour with Earth Defense Force 2025 for the last few months, showing off all its awesome features at events like E3, PAX Prime, and New York Comic-Con. Fans continuously ask us if the DLC from Japan will be available in North America and Europe. And I can proudly say “yes!” We’ll make sure all content from Japan makes it over here at some point, and we’ll have more details on all of that in the near future.
In the meantime, we’re pleased to announce that customers at GameStop can start pre-ordering Earth Defense Force 2025 tomorrow, and will receive a special Weapons Pack for free.
Available exclusively to customers at GameStop is the Air Raider Weapons Pack, featuring:
Pure Decoy Launcher (Setsu) — a weapon that distracts the enemy by discharging a large balloon that takes the shape of an attractive female, but the enemies will meet their fate when the balloon unexpectedly self destructs, destroying everything in its vicinity.
The BMO3 Vegalta Gold — a limited edition, gold-coated model that will reflect radar waves and has a combat burner to throw flames. Players will also be able to take flight for short periods of time with it equipped.
We have plans to include additional Weapons Packs that will be available via pre-order or DLC, and will include the packs below. We’ll be sure to have more details on where exactly to find these packs, soon!
The Fencer Weapons Pack
Ifrit — A cannon that launches rockets that will separate and disperse over the sea. Each rocket is equipped with multiple incendiary bombs that will ignite upon contact, causing massive damage.
Blood Storm — A powerful cannon that will separate midair and rain down on the enemy’s head and inflict damage on an entire area.
The Wing Diver Weapons Pack
Reflectron Laser — A special laser that fires in two directions and can even shoot through narrow passageways. It’s an effective weapon with giant insects, as it can maximize range without obstruction.
Gleipnir — This super weapon silently discharges balls of energy with the ability to launch continuous attacks. Only Wing Divers can use this weapon, as it requires the Psionic Link.
The Ranger Weapons Pack
Volatile Napalm — A military grade discharge device that sets everything ablaze and damages the target and surrounding areas.
Pure Decoy Launcher (Mian) — a weapon that distracts the enemy by discharging a large balloon that takes the shape of an attractive female, but the enemies will meet their fate when the balloon unexpectedly self destructs, destroying everything in its vicinity.
Earth Defense Force 2025 will be available in February 2014, and we have fun plans leading up to the launch. Earth Defense Force 2025 stays true to what you liked most about Earth Defense Force 2017, but now features more than 700 weapons, dozens more missions, four-player online multiplayer (for the first time on console), high-powered vehicles, and numerous upgrades that you’ll need to see to believe.
Come on over to our Facebook, as we have a great community of fans that share wonderful ideas, and we plan to do some cool reveals on there in the future. I can’t wait to share more about EDF with all of you on PlayStation.Blog as we get closer to launch.
Thanks!

Michael McWhertor wrote:Earth Defense Force makes the leap to PS4 with giant mechs, kaiju and a solid frame rate
The delightfully cheesy Japanese action game series Earth Defense Force is coming to PlayStation 4 next year with Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair. The expanded, upgraded version of last year's EDF4 — known as Earth Defense Force 2025 outside of Japan — brings with it an immensely enjoyable new addition: giant mech battles against Godzilla-sized monsters.
Earth Defense Force 4.1 includes all the oversized bug-shooting action of its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sibling. You're still firing machine guns and rockets at alien insects and giant death robots, but the 4.1 release adds a new layer to giant monster killing. When the creature known as Huge Monster Erginus invades — right in the midst of a swarm of giant ants — players will get access to a "super gigantic weapon" called the mobile fortress Balam.
Airdropped in by your EDF colleagues, Balam is a beefy walking mech that players can climb into with a tap of the DualShock 4's touchpad. Once inside, players can slowly, methodically hoof it over to Erginus and start battling. It's a lumbering beast of a 'bot, but controlling it feels great.
The Tokyo Game Show demo of EDF 4.1 featured a Balam that could hook, uppercut and slam downward with its giant metal fists. But the fisticuffs action while controlling the mobile fortress is immensely satisfying. Each punch requires a big wind-up and delivers a chunky, kaiju blood-splattering hit.
As Balam, you'll deliver knockdown blows to Erginus and vice versa. As the two of you tumble through the low-polygon cities of Earth Defense Force 4.1, you'll crush buildings and kick up a lot of dust. Huge ants will swarm all over Balam's torso and legs during the fight. It's creepy, but silly, a perfect fit for the franchise.
My battle with Erginus lasted a good five minutes or more, and after throwing dozens of robot haymakers, the kaiju ran away. He'd return in a later chapter, the developer said, indicating that we'll see multiple kaiju fights in EDF4.1.
D3Publisher promised more new additions and tweaks in the PS4 edition of Earth Defense Force 4, but said some of those are currently "confidential." The PS4 game's framerate was surprisingly solid for an EDF title; the only noticeable slowdown occurred during our mech battle, when we had an extended view of the city.
Currently the company plans to release Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair in Japan in 2015. An international release date for the PS4 game hasn't been decided yet.

Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders From Planet Space on PlayStation Vita isn’t the only EDF game you can look forward to this year, as XSEED Games announced that Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair is coming to North America on PlayStation 4 in Fall 2015.
Here’s what XSEED had to say about Earth Defense Force 4.1, which is billed as a complete re-imagining of EDF 2025:XSEED wrote:Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair (PS4) – Fall 2015
The wild sci-fi action of the Earth Defense Force series comes to the PS4 system for the first time in this complete reimagining of Earth Defense Force 2025, now with silky smooth frame-rates, beefed-up graphics, and over 50% new content. After selecting from one of four unique playable classes and customizing their weapons, players will lead NPC troops into city-wide battles against hordes of seemingly endless giant bugs, robots, and other colossal enemies. Two players can enjoy local co-op and versus modes, while online co-op supports up to four players to increase the odds against this massive alien threat.
The Shadow of New Despair will be at XSEED’s E3 booth (West Hall, Booth #5212).
