I am astonished no one's told me about this. Conan O'Brien is making video reviews of games, and he's totally blowing away all the aspies doing reviews on YouTube. I've already linked his Skyrim review in the TES thread:
The aspies are putting Minecraft in museums but the moment you step away from the aspie asylum and bring a regular Joe in, you immediately get some sane perspective. It's exactly the same thing that happens with "modern"/"contemporary" art: the pseuds may say whatever they want, but even the man in the street can tell you it's bullshit. I'd like to see him review "indie" games. And you can see in his reviews of real games, like RE6 or the new Hitman, that though he makes fun of those too quite a bit, he is nevertheless enjoying them immensely more. So there you have it: an average Joe telling you why average Joes prefer proper games to your "indie" and "art" garbage: because they are far better.
I am generally wary of non-gamers, like the Guardian or Forbes dudes or whatever, coming in and running their mouths off about games, but this guy is a revelation. His reviews are obviously meant to be jokes and they are of course extremely short and lack detail, but they get at least one thing down that no one else besides me seems to get, and that's perspective. So keep an eye on this dude and bump this thread whenever you see him update.
And his rating schemes are priceless, though videogame aspies are so dumb that I am sure they'll still fail to get it. Scathing Accuracy is still rating out of 18 or something, and they are supposed to be the SMART ones.
That was hilarious. And the game looks awesome too, in a way. Production values through the roof, a Lara that is finally attractive, and mechanics that seem like the natural evolution of Dragon's Lair, but in a good way. Obviously it's light gaming, but like I said in a good way.
First Tomb Raider game I look forward to playing. I'll probably add it to the frontpage, no less, now that Aliens: CM and MGR are out.
