Alec C wrote:Sony bought Sucker Punch in the middle of 2011, just after they released Infamous 2, which was in June of that year. Since then their only visible output has been some DLC and the twisted remix that was Festival of Blood, but Cole himself, Infamous’ lead, has been seen in Street Fighter X Tekken and – of course – All Stars Battle Royale.

That would have bought the studio considerable time to be working on something for next-gen, as they’ve certainly not announced anything for the PlayStation 3 and chances are they won’t be doing so now given the fact that the PS3′s most likely in its twilight year.

Whether two years is enough to craft something for PS4 is anyone’s guess – and it would depend entirely on what they’re actually working on, of course – but it’s obvious Infamous is a series Sony are keen on continuing with, and an Infamous 3 wouldn’t go down badly at all with the PlayStation faithful, as far as we can tell.

Indeed, Cole’s voice actor, Eric Ladin, apparently said recently that he “will be extremely busy with Infamous 3 in the future” – although that response in an interview seems to have been cut from the published version, so it’s hard to verify it 100% [3].

Jaime Griesemer, former game/systems designer of Halo, joined Sucker Punch last year. I'm looking forward to what he produces with the studio.

Megan Farokhmanesh wrote:Infamous: Second Son is in development exclusively for PlayStation 4 by Sucker Punch Productions, game director Nate Fox announced at the Sony PlayStation Meeting 2013 today.

"Our security comes at a high price: our freedom," Fox said prior to the game's reveal. "Picture how things would change, how the world would react if a handful of people suddenly developed superhuman abilities capable of unleashing incredible carnage ... these people would be living, breathing weapons."

"Which of us would have the courage to fight to get our freedoms back?" Fox asked.

The game's trailer, which you can watch below, does not feature previous protagonist Cole MacGrath, but an unnamed man in a red hat. An unidentified person watches chaos erupt on security cameras just before the hat-wearing man lifts a broken camera and says, "You are not in control."

According to a post on Sucker Punch's website, Second Son takes place seven years after Cole's story. The game will follow Delsin Rowe, a 24-year-old who is "absolutely convinced that he's destined for greatness." Players will explore Seattle, with decisions affecting the way the game plays out.

Brian Fleming wrote:So what’s new? I mean, what have you been up to? Cool. Us? Not much. Just a new character, new city, new powers, and all designed especially for the new PlayStation 4. I hope you’re excited – because we really are! Actually, for us it’s probably one part excitement and one part pure terror, but that’s just the way of things I guess… But here we are at last to break the months of silence: All of us at Sucker Punch are very pleased to introduce you to Delsin Rowe, and our new title Second Son! Let’s cut to the chase!

Delsin Rowe is the star of Second Son, and you probably know someone like him: A 24 year-old who is absolutely convinced he’s destined for greatness; though so far that greatness has managed to elude him. He grew up just outside Seattle, where his great – if accidental – calling comes crashing into his life. After rescuing occupants from a fiery bus wreck, he discovers that he suddenly has the ability to direct, manipulate and even transform into… Smoke. Could he have absorbed this power from one of the passengers he pulled from the wreckage?

Setting the scene: It’s been seven years since the Cole McGrath episodes and the world has clearly changed. Anyone showing signs of being a so-called “bio-terrorist” is immediately handed over to the Department of Unified Protection (DUP) — a government agency created to ensure there is never a repeat of the catastrophic events of Empire City and New Marais. So Delsin, who has never been particularly respectful of authority, finds himself caught in the DUP dragnet – And decides he’s not going to go quietly.

Along the way, Delsin is going to ask questions that are not just relevant to the world of Second Son – but to the world we all live in today. A world where we are often instructed to surrender our freedoms to help improve our security. Ben Franklin once wrote “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Is he right?

As you play Second Son, you’ll explore lots of Seattle’s familiar landmarks. As with all games in this series, the path the gameplay and story take will depend on the decisions you make along the way. Of course, we are creating all these characters and locations at a remarkable level of detail – made possible by PS4. In fact, this trailer was produced in-house using our game engine – can you tell we’re having fun with the new GPU, tools, and our new VFX system?

We’ll be back in the coming weeks with more details, but until then you’ll find us at @suckerpunchprod, #SecondSon, and http://www.facebook.com/infamous.

The latest issue of Game Informer has new details on inFAMOUS: Second Son.

The game follows inFAMOUS 2‘s good ending, where (spoilers incoming!) protagonist Cole McGrath sacrifices himself and other conduits to save humanity. Seven years have passed since then, and the surviving conduits are demonized as “bioterrorists” by the American media and feared by average citizens. To deal with these bioterrorists, the government has set up the Department of Unified Protection, a fast-responding and oppressive organization which actively identifies and holds without trial conduits in dedicated containment facilities.

After a transport vehicle crashes near Seattle, the conduits inside it escape, and the city is placed on lockdown, transformed into what Game Informer describes as “something that resembles an enormous airport” with “elevated walkways equipped with searchlights and security cameras” to help the DUP capture the escaped bioterrorists. Checkpoints, scanners, and supernatural power-detective finger-print devices are set up throughout the city, slowing down everyday life.

“The DUP is the TSA,” producer Brian Fleming told Game Informer, citing the game’s parallels to real-world, post-9/11 America.

New Protagonist

Delsin Rowe is inFAMOUS: Second Son‘s new protagonist. He is a 24-year-old Native American street graffiti artist and rebel. When the conduit transport vehicle crashes near his hometown, he moves in to help those wounded, and realizes that he’s been a conduit all along.

His power? Empathic mimicry—similar to Peter Petrelli’s from Heroes. He has the ability to absorb the abilities of other conduits. When he runs to help those injured in the crash, he comes into contact with a conduit who can control smoke, which grants him his first power. But there are others to come.

Gameplay Demo

A gameplay demo shown to Game Informer saw Delsin take out various forward-operating bases run by the DUP using smoke projectiles to destroy security cameras, and a smoke-dash to transport through an air duct at ground level to a building’s rooftop. There will be various ducts like these in Seattle for easy transportation, but like Cole before him, Delsin can still climb, as well.

From the roof, Delsin sends down fireballs to the walkways below, crumbling them to the ground. He then leaps off the building and descends in a manner similar to Cole’s thunder drop, scattering the DUP agents below.

Now in the base’s center, a DUP agent emerges from a van with a mini-gun and numerous agents surround Delsin. Casting them aside, he unleashes a smoke cloud to temporarily immobilize the agents, then takes out the mini-gun heavy with a barrage of smoke. With the other agents still coughing, Delsin now has enough time to take them out for good.

Most of the DUP agents battle in line with SWAT teams or military police, but some appear to utilize supernatural powers. But Sucker Punch wouldn’t say if that meant there are conduits who work within the DUP.

Power Restoration

Like Cole, who needed to recharge his abilities with electricity-powered devices, Delsin needs help from the environment to replenish his smoke supply. Chimneys, vehicle wreckage, or even a DUP agent’s tear gas canister can help replenish his abilities.

To absorb smoke, players can use the PlayStation 4 touchpad by pressing down both thumbs, which causes the smoke to swirl and enter Delsin’s body.

The touchpad also has other uses. The fingerprint scanners used by DUP agents to identify conduits are also used to open the containment cells that hold them. Players can use the touchpad to free these conduits themselves.

Another use of the touchpad: Delsin pulls out a brightly lit control module with one hand, blasting at it with the other. To do this, players swipe up on the touch pad to throw it forward, and continuously tap the touchpad to fire at it.

Decisions

Previous inFAMOUS games offered good-versus-evil lines to follow. There will be tough decision-making in Second Son, but Sucker Punch didn’t offer any examples.

A possible example noted by Game Informer, however: during the demo, a DUP officer attempts to surrender to Delsin. The player can chose to let him live or die, which could mean some sort of karma system similar to previous games is in play.

inFAMOUS: Second Son has yet to be dated, however, resumes suggest it is a PlayStation 4 launch title. For more information, including new screenshots, pick up the June 2013 issue of Game Informer.

A few days ago we reported about the presence of a label on the official Japanese website hinting to the presence of online multiplayer in inFAMOUS: Second Son. Unfortunately (or luckily, depending on which side of the multiplayer fence you’re on), said wording is either a mistake on the site or indicates something different from actual multiplayer gameplay. Brand Development Director Ken Schramm clarified that while interviewed by the Taiwanese media during a stage event at Taipei Game Show, as reported by UDN.

Schramm mentioned that Delsin Rowe will meet partners during the story (about whom he can’t yet share details), but inFamous: Second Son remains a single player game and there’s no multiplayer in the game’s design.

A few more interesting details were shared during the Q&A with the media:

The game has an open architecture, so players can do quests outside of the main story without time constraints. Despite that they still have to be careful, because by making choices between good and evil certain situations may be irremediably lost, and it won’t be possible to play them anymore.

While no new superpowers besides smoke and neon (that we already knew about) have been revealed, it was mentioned that superpowers will interact heavily with the environment, and the environment itself can somehow be considered a character of the story.

To ensure balance, Delsin won’t be able use different elements at the same time. There will be a meter, so the player won’t be able to just go all out without any restriction. Every different kind of power will also have the same general setup.

Love this quote from Second Son's art director:

inFAMOUS: First Light will launch for PlayStation 4 on August 26 in North America and August 27 in Europe, Sucker Punch announced.

The game, which will be a standalone download for PlayStation 4, follows the backstory of Fetch, one of the character’s inAMOUS: Second Son protagonist Delsin comes across in his Seattle adventure. You’ll visit new areas, such as Curdun Cay and its surrounding mountain passes, as well as return to Seattle.

inFAMOUS: Second Son isn’t required to play First Light, but if you do have it, there will be certain bonuses.
