Agatsuma Entertainment, the company behind Code of Princess and a couple of 3DS games starring Doraemon, is reviving the cult video game series with the rubbery rope, Umihara Kawase. A new game was revealed for Nintendo 3DS called Farewell, Umihara Kawase and some of the original team members are working on it.

The gameplay mechanics are pretty much the same. You play as Umihara Kawase, now 20 years old, who has an elastic fish line. She can throw the "rubber ring" out and snag a wall to swing on or hook fish to capture enemies.

Farewell, Umihara Kawase will have several playable characters including the original elementary school age Umihara. When you clear a stage you can earn costumes or items for the game’s visual and sound collections.

Farewell, Umihara Kawase is slated for release in summer 2013 for Nintendo 3DS.

Farewell Umihara Kawase from Agatsuma Entertainment has brand new characters and no we’re not talking about adult Umihara Kawase who was revealed last time. Famitsu has an article that introduced Yokoyama, an undercover time police officer from the future who is a descendant from the Kawase family. Yokoyama has a unique ability to slow the stream of time.

Emiko-chan, a nine year old girl who is friends with young Umihara Kawase, is another playable character. She sounds like an "easy mode" character since her special ability lets players restart a level from a checkpoint if they touch it.

It's such a shame they never turn away from the fish/pencil/eraser-themed stages and create something more epic and adventurous with the same basic mechanics. That video looks awful.

Yumi’s Odd Odyssey AKA Farewell Umihara Kawase Is Coming In Early 2014

Natsume originally announced Yumi’s Odd Odyssey for PSP when they picked up the rights to Umihara Kawase Portable, which was eventually cancelled. But, we will get a localized Umihara Kawase game!

Siliconera can announce Natsume will publish Agatsuma Entertainment’s Farewell, Umihara Kawase in North America as Yumi’s Odd Odyssey.

“We have been interested in releasing this unique title for awhile now,” said Hiro Maekawa, President and CEO at Natsume.

“We are working very closely with Agatsuma Entertainment to bring this game to our fans, who we know appreciate games that are a little different, and also have lovable characters.”

Yumi’s Odd Odyssey has the same rubber fishing line gameplay where you swing from platform Bionic Commando style. The 3DS game has a couple extra characters like Noko who can bend time, Yumi-chan a young version of Yumi, and Emiko a childhood friend that creates checkpoints. Another interesting tidbit is Natsume explained why Yumi is in a colorful world filled with fish. She’s actually a traveling sushi chef.

Yumi’s Odd Odyssey is slated for release in early 2014 as an Nintendo eShop download.

Sayonara UmiharaKawase Coming to PC October 2015

Sayonara UmiharaKawase - Video gaming history coming to PC October 2015

Spring 2015 saw the rebirth of a classic gaming franchise when Sayonara UmiharaKawase + launched on PS Vita. As a result of the overwhelming success of the PS Vita Version, Agatsuma Entertainment is please to confirm that Sayonara UmiharaKawase will be available to purchase on PC in October 2015. This will be the first time ever that PC gamers will be able to experience what makes this game and the UmiharaKawase franchise so unique and brilliant.

Easy to play, difficult to master, Sayonara UmiharaKawase is a totally unique ‘Rubbering Action’ physics based puzzle platform game with over 20 years of gaming history.

Developed by the creators of the original game (Kiyoshi Sakai and Toshinobu Kondo), this cult classic was a Japanese indie smash hit before the rest of the world knew what a cult classic was!

Completely optimised for PC, play as 'Umihara Kawase' - a 20 year old backpacking Japanese sushi chef armed with a fishing rod, a rubber fishing line and a fishing hook. Avoid fish-like enemies, conveyer belts, spikes, watery pits, time travel and more. The deeper in to this dream-like game players venture, the more challenging the solutions and the greater the time pressure becomes. Along the way, look out for shortcuts and secret exits and unlock bonus levels.

It is the elasticity of Umihara’s rubber fishing line that has always set this franchise apart from all other rope games, giving unprecedented levels of mobility and discovery. Tightening the line or giving lots of slack can be the difference between success and failure. The bungee like nature of the fishing line allows the player to stretch down to otherwise unreachable areas or be catapulted upwards.

Key Features

• The latest version of this classic 20-year old franchise
• Created by programmer Kiyoshi Sakai (also programmer on ‘The Mosquito’) and character designer & illustrator, Toshinobu Kondo – creators of the original game.
• Unique 1970’s Japanese visual style
• All the 60 new and re-envisaged classic stages, plus the new enemy placements as used in the PS Vita game but upgraded for PC
• Additional bonus levels available once the game has been completed
• Global time ranking
• Unlock bonus features including some brilliant KAWAII style art and nostalgic audio with bonus sound track from the original game

In addition to the launch of Sayonara UmiharaKawase, Agatsuma Entertainment can also confirm the launch later this year on PC of 2 other classic games in the franchise – UmiharaKawase and UmiharaKawase Shun.

UmiharaKawase was the first game in the franchise, originally released in 1994 for console - it was the game that created a cult classic franchise.
