The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a third-person sci-fi action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse, where the tenuous balance of power between Earth, Mars, and the Belt is on the brink of collapse, and trust is a scarce commodity. Now it is time to gather a crew and find your own path through the web of lies to leave your mark on the solar system. By the 24th century, humanity has conquered the cosmos, but that hasn't made life any easier. What begins as a brief sojourn on the asteroid Eros reluctantly entangles you in a solar system-wide conspiracy. You will need to adapt to survive and keep your motley crew united in their mission as everything around you begins to fall apart. This is your story. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn offers a truly personal journey that evolves based on the choices you make and the pressures they place on everything you stand for.

CHARACTERS

Your crew is more than just backup — they’re the heart of your story. Each companion brings with them their own personal history and motives for joining the mission, though not all are easy to uncover. They’re more than just specialists. Some are haunted by past mistakes. Others hold on dearly to loyalty, survival, or even something they’ve never been capable of fully putting into words. The ship becomes your shared home — it’s not just a command center but a place where the crew can bond and where trust is earned. A single shared silence might become the foundation for a much deeper connection. A single decision could overturn it all. The way you lead your crew and the choices you make under pressure will shape every relationship in ways you don’t always see coming.

COMBAT

Combat in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is tactical and built around smart decision-making under pressure, where every move has the potential to shift the balance of a fight. Control your captain in third-person, and gain the upper hand by making use of a variety of weapons, tactics (cover, command, etc.), and specialized abilities. The game features multiple roles, each offering a distinct approach that reflects your personal playstyle. Two companions will fight alongside you, supporting whatever strategy you choose with complementary skills. Others will assist from a distance, hacking into systems or drawing enemies’ attention right when you need it most. You will issue commands in real time and coordinate with your squad to stay one step ahead as the battlefield evolves. Survival depends on how quickly you can adapt and who you trust to stand with you when your back is to the wall.

EXPLORATION

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn opens into a narrative-driven world where shifting power dynamics and personal choices will define your experience. You’ll visit the marvel that is the gardens of Ganymede, the teeming slums of Ceres, whole bunker complexes veiled in vastness of the Asteroid Belt, and the imperious political bastions of Mars and Luna. As you travel throughout the solar system, you will be ensnared in a cyclone of power struggles and unresolved conflict. The system looks different from every planet and from every asteroid. Some are falling apart. Others just hide it better. Talk to the locals and use your skills to influence the outcomes, sometimes by digging into secrets some may wish remained buried. You may even cross paths with those who have already made their indelible mark on this universe. What you learn and how you act upon it can open new paths and slowly and subtly change your place in the world around you.

The screenshots gave me many reminders of my on-foot experiences in Star Citizen.

This third screenshot reminds me a lot of the marketplace areas of the Pyro system space stations Orbituary, Checkmate and Ruin Station.

The last two screens gave me Mass Effect series vibes.

Following up on the announcement and trailer video, is a developer interview video between YouTuber CohhCarnage and the game's Creative Director: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx7-iguxjHI

It is a long video that gives some insight on the nature of the game, but having already played and experienced Star Citizen, instead of feeling overwhelmingly excited, I now feel more cautious and to be prepared to be disappointed at the wasted potential of the game following in Mass Effect and Starfield's footsteps too slavishly, that could potentially limit the game.

A Redditor has summarised the dev interview:

What is Osiris Reborn:
- A single player, third person, cinematic, story-driven sci-fi Action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse with both TV and Book elements. No multiplayer. (sounds like Mass Effect style).

- A group of friends within Owlcat made a pitch for the game and the senior Devs loved it, they discussed a lot and brainstormed how to do it justice before aproaching Alcon Entertainment with a pitch and.... they were excited as well!

- Pre-orders are open now ahead of release, Owlcat is known for crowdfunding their past games for supporters and collectors such as Kickstarter so understand there is no release date yet and game may evolve from what you see.

Story:
- Osiris Reborn takes place in the begininng of the first book or Season 1 of the show. For example: player will react to aftermath of Canterbury. (REMEMBER THE CANT).

- "Familiar characters" from the TV show will be in the game with the original actors voicing themselves.

- Player will be drawn into a "spiderweb of political intrigue and powerplay" that Expanse fans are used to.

- The developers will offer tools for those who are not familiar with all the terms and events that take place similar to previous games they made (i.e. friendly to newcomers).

- Closer to a 30-50 hour game than a 100+ hour odyssey that Owlcat is known for, with lots of optional content.

Gameplay:
- Alexander said there will be some difficulty settings to make the game more approachable but it is still being developed currently.

- Semi open world with optional locations to explore during certain story beats

- Create and customize your own character: Earther, Martian or Belter.

- Can choose the weapon, skills, and abilities that suit your playstyle

- Lead a crew of highly-skilled specialists with their own unique skills. For example: Zafar, the engineer, will have a turret and drones special to him.

- Player will have 2 companions fighting alongside them at a time they can choose from with the rest in your ship, on other missions...etc. (minimum 3 companions)

- Player will have access to all skills and abilities your squad has.

- Real time commands for your squad and emphasis on tactical decision making

- Space is a big focus in the game. The vast and unwelcoming feeling is something they want to convey. For example: experience of getting into your suit, feeling the click of magnetic boots on the hull of your ship or space station.

- There will be space shoot outs and moments where you can go on the ceiling, floor and walls

- "we want to put you in the spacesuit and allow you to experience space itself" (possible space walking?)

- Because of the cinematic plot, there will be a range of dialogue options, "good guy to pragmatic greedy guy" and roleplay ability however nothing too broad. (i.e. super evil vs super saint)

THE SHIP:
- The ship becomes your shared home — it’s not just a command center but a place where the crew can bond and where trust is earned.

- You will get to walk around and chat with companions and see what they are up to.

- Decided not to talk about ship customizations, there will be some*** customizations and some interactions*** (lower expectations, expect nothing big).

Companions:
- Companions are front and center of all Owl cat games but in The Expanse they will be the biggest pillars.

- Each companion has their own backstory, goals, and motive for joining.

- Relationships with companions will be important and will "flourish or deteriorate" depending on the choices you make.

- "Of course there will be Romance."

MINOR SPOILERS:
- One of the characters is your twin and you will customize them alongside your own character but not their skills or abilities as they have their own personality and backstory. Your twin will be your first companion before recruiting others.

- Chose not to talk about the possibility of losing companions though it is hinted on their website. (possibly plot related or choice based?)

- Locations like Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, Luna will be part of the game.
