First game from Tomonobu Igataki's Valhalla Game Studios. Looks like Vanquish is getting some competition. Nothing stands out about the visuals to me though.

I like how they've added guns to dispatch airborne enemies quickly. It's a big step up from the methods used to take down those flying dragons in Ninja Gaiden 2; they were fine for the added tension when you fought them alongside the werewolves in a grueling battle, but were boring to fight by themselves.

A concern I see right now is that the enemies died really easily. I'd expect this sort-of thing towards the end of the game when your weapons are upgraded a lot. The enemies shown can't be expected to put up the same resistance as the robots in Vanquish, but they died without the player doing any advanced techniques (where was the dodging?). In Ninja Gaiden 2 to obliterate opponents took a charged attack or prior limb liberation; in other words, it took more time to kill foes. Beheadings weren't taking place every second. I don't want the enemies dying so fast that there is little satisfaction in the 'en masse' deaths. This is why in RE4, players had to deal with the absurd image of Leon shooting ganados 6-8 times in the head with the pistol before it exploded in the early stages. Mikami had to find a way past the "boom headshot! dead" way plaguing many games (i.e. FPS games). For the later stages, he upped the easy kill headshot problem fix by adding the exposed plagas ganado. Then he hilariously to the dismay (horror) of many gamers added an enemy that's head grew back. If you expected quick kills through headshots in RE4, look out.

Another concern is that Itagaki hasn't proven himself with gunplay. Mikami has.

edit: Another concern is that the game will introduce a stealth mission or platforming bits that are underdeveloped. Mikami smartly avoided the former by removing the silenced pistol and binoculars (demo let you use them anywhere) in RE4.

Wow.

But yeah, visually it looks like... a THQ game.

I hate to see those fuckers' logo on an Itagaki game.

Here's the official website: http://www.devilsthird.com/

Sincerely, this is quite different from what I was expecting from him. I've already associated his output with some kind of style and recurring themes, but maybe those were decisions of other Team Ninja staff members... or, well, maybe he got sick of all that and sought a different theme for a fresh start.

Let's leave this kind of vague nonsensical bullshit for the fagots' websites. What different "themes" were you expecting? Ruy Hayabusa and big-breasted girls in bikinis? He doesn't have the rights for these franchises. It's just an action game about dudes with swords and guns for christsake -- what sort of "fresh start" is this supposed to be? Jesus, dude.

Thanks for the link anyway.

THQ seems to have dropped the game. Itagaki will now have to look for a new publisher.

We held a 'hanami' party in celebration of the birthday of our CTO, Tomonobu Itagaki, the other day.

Under the flag of Valhalla, a number of people have gathered from all over the world. They sometimes clash with each other, enhance each other and appreciate each other: such scenes are our usual days in the studio.

Please do look forward to our new challenge, DEVIL'S THIRD!

April 19, 2013

Let's hope we get some concrete info soon.

Famitsu has an interesting feature this week with comments from game makers on rumors or questions within the industry.

Valhalla Game Studios

Update on Devil’s Third from Tomonobu Itagaki:

> Development is going well. It’s at a stage where the team can deeply expand on it’s playability.

> Since information hasn’t been being released at all, naturally you don’t hear rumors. There is no warring if you don’t know when or how an information leak will pop up. However, don’t expect to hear anything at E3.

> The game can do a lot. Based on the context so far, the team has made something very surprising to play.

> It’s coming along precisely according to Itagaki’s style.

“Next year will be the year we’ll be releasing the console game, Devil’s Third,” says Itagaki. “At the moment, it is about 80% complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there’s still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That’s also one of the reasons I’ve decided to work independently.”

“For you fans out there, I’d like to apologize for making you worry,” he continues. “We’ll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it.”

E3 2014: Devil's Third Is a Wii U Exclusive

Devil's Third, the next game from Ninja Gaiden director Tomonobu Itagaki, is coming exclusively to Wii U.

Itagaki's action game marries melee combat, and cover- and first-person shooting. It also features objective-based, attack/defend competitive multiplayer modes, a level editor, and character customization.

Nintendo "really understood my vision," Itagaki told IGN, "so I felt I really had to work with them."

Developer Valhalla Games has been working on Devil's Third for many years. After the dissolution of THQ, its fate remained uncertain until today.

Apparently they showed a trailer at the IGN stream, but my browser/OS are outdated and I can't see it: http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/06/09/ig ... resents-e3

I googled it and looked on YouTube, but it hasn't been posted anywhere yet. I really want to see it.

lol at Itagaki for rationalizing going with last-gen, when for years he was lecturing us about the importance of cutting edge hardware.

Nothing weird or revolutionary, as we had been led to expect, but a solid step forward in the action genre. It's a TPS with proper melee mechanics and some wall-running, etc. added in. Graphics are definitely last-gen, and even then nowhere near the higher end of what the last gen accomplished. Environments seem standard fare, but character design is very accomplished -- look at the face of the girl at the start of the trailer, and how much prettier and even more detailed it is than those seen in any number of PS4 or Xbone games.

Also disappointed that that helicopter scene in the demo happens in a cutscene, and when you get control back there is just a helicopter sitting there in the middle of the screen that feels like a prop that has been placed there instead of something that fell out of the sky. They are definitely behind in terms of making everything in the game's world take place seamlessly.

Nevertheless, it looks like I will enjoy it more than the Bayonettas, because it's an Itagaki game and therefore avoids all of the mistakes that Kamiya has been making since DMC1.

Sal Romano wrote:Devil’s Third creator Tomonobu Itagaki took to Facebook to provide a development update on Devil’s Third, which has been silent since its E3 re-reveal.

An English version of Itagaki’s Japanese text was posted, however, we’ve modified it just a tad for better readability. Get the update below.

Tomonobu Itagaki wrote:I recently received lots of questions about Devil’s Third from my fans.

I’d like to speak about development status of Devil’s Third in my own words, to the extent that I am allowed.

  1. Devil’s Third is a strong fusion between action games and shooters.
  2. Devil’s Third development is going smoothly. In other words, we finished editing the closing movie the other day.
  3. Devil’s Third will be released next year. Nintendo has already announced this in their press release.
  4. The scale of Devil’s Third‘s story mode is greater than that of Ninja Gaiden.
  5. Devil’s Third demolishes the standard of past console games in online multiplayer.
  6. Almost all specifications I wanted to do were implemented. I got an up-close look at the great forerunners Call of Duty, Battlefield, Gears of War, and my beloved Halo. On that basis, we added completely new level of playability that only we can create.
  7. Anyone can enjoy this game; from casual gamers to hard-core gamers. Let me put it this way. You guys can throw a fun party, or can kill each other in realistic war. You can play your heart out.
  8. This is all I can disclose to you today. I can’t tell you when the war will begin. It’s the way the world goes. I really want to tell you more, my fans waiting with crushing frustration.

It’s rough on a man!

Well, be patient just a little longer. Don’t miss it!

Looks great (apart from the last-gen graphics, though aesthetically it's strong). He's definitely done his homework as far as taking mechanics from all the cutting-edge games is concerned. The only thing he's missing is Mirror's Edge. I think I even saw some Vanquish in there at one point.

Sal Romano wrote:Nintendo won’t publish Devil’s Third, its Wii U-exclusive from Ninja Gaiden director Tomonobu Itagaki, in North America, according to an Unseen64 video report claiming the publisher is “purposefully distancing themselves from the game.”

“Nintendo of America has lost faith in [Devil’s Third],” the video states.

“Nintendo of America has no intention of publishing the game in the US. That is why we never saw it on [Nintendo’s E3 event] Treehouse Live this year and that is why it has been removed from the eShop.”

The video adds that early impressions from European reviewers indicate that the game’s “incredibly inconsistent frame-rate” and “less than sub-par” visuals make up a title that “just isn’t very good.”

However, according to a Siliconera report, the game will be released in North America by a separate publisher—one that readers of its website should be very familiar with. On that note, we’d guess either NIS America or XSEED Games.

It seems that the world is in disorder...no way. I feel that the informations on Devil's Third are tangled.
So I decided to tell you guys about the Specifications and recommended playing devices best suited for Devil's Third, plus useful infomation for you guys.
I felt the time has come for me to talk about.

[About the specifications of Devil's Third]

Frame rate: 30fps.
*note: I promise you can fully enjoy this MASSIVE shooter with 30 fps.

Split Screen: This game don't have split screen feature for both offline and online play. 'Cuz I used all the power of Wii U for single player. That was tough tradeoff for me. Plz understand.

Voice chat: We don't equip voice chat feature. 'Cuz we had maxed out its bandwidth to achieve online play by 16 users.

Yo Guys,
Don't disappoint, and don't be negative. I promise the wide/deep/brandnew playability for you guys today 8)

[Recommended Playing Devices]

Wii U of course :)
TV set.
PRO contoroller.
USB keyboard.
Wired Internet.

Thanks for your constant support for Devil's Third.
Let's make the future together!

Tomonobu Itagaki wrote:[Why do I recommend Pro-controler]

I never wanna discount standard tab-controller.
But, Devil's Third is a super speady game. So Tab-controler has following disadvantages.

1. Four face buttons are positioned overcrowding. So you easily press the wrong button. In that case, you will die.

2. Distance of two analog sticks, are too far apart. So it's quite difficult for u to feel/grasp the battlefield.

3. Devil's Third is a game you play a long time. The standard Tab-controler is too heavy for such use.

Thanks

Valhalla Game Studios wrote:To: Media Friends who preview the multiplayer mode

As Itagaki mentioned in his FB column, please use PRO controller along with a USB keyboard when you preview Devil's Third.
(Tablet controller is not recommended)

For your information, the multiplayer mode of Devil's Third is designed to be played by tens of thousands of players. We understand it's going to be a very tough job to evaluate such a game. It will be much appreciated if you will use your imagination to get the depth when you play the multiplayer mode.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and your attention to above.
