GameInformer: What can you tell me about Human Element?

Robert Bowling: The whole universe first, experience second, gameplay mechanics last, that whole philosophy on how we plan to design games just sets up the back end of this universe that we’re currently creating.

That universe is set on this whole premise of, “What is the greatest threat in a zombie apocalypse?” If you’re conditioned with the entire zombie culture it’s the infection, it’s the zombies. But in reality, they’re the walking dead. They’re weak. They’re really not a physical threat to you in a lot of ways. Their greatest strength is the fear that they instill in us, the survivors. They lead us to do unreasonable things to survive. By that logic, the greatest strength in a zombie apocalypse is the human element. The other survivors who are smart enough to kill you and take what they want and to threaten you and to do things like that.

Think of this as a zombie game that isn’t about zombies. This is 35 years after the event has taken place. What the event was is fairly irrelevant, but we’re living in this world now and we need to deal with it and we need to survive. It’s much more about that human element than the reason how we got here.

Jim Reilly wrote:Building Character

Bowling says Human Element contains three main attributes players will choose from when creating their character: class, identity, and persona.

Players can choose from class types including action, intelligence, and stealth, with each offering a number of different abilities. For example, action-based players focus on fighting and physical attacks, while intelligence players can do things like barter, build more complex fortifications, and create alliances. The stealth class provides new quest options and allows you to evade basic defenses.

When selecting your identity, you choose from a solo adult, partnered adult, or adult with child. This acts the same as selecting a difficulty at the start of the game. “We don’t want to scale AI intelligence or damage or health," Bowling says. "That’s not how we want to scale difficulty. We want your identity, your specific scenarios determine the difficulty you’re going to have surviving purely out of responsibilities.”

Lastly, Bowling says persona determines a player’s sex and race. “How you choose to start in the world will determine how you can engage and impact in the scenarios you will be presented with on a physical and moral level that you approach this world.”

GameInformer: What platforms are you aiming for your new universe?

Robert Bowling: Next-gen consoles, PC, mobile, and tablets.

GameInformer:When are you expecting to ship the game?

Robert Bowling: Right now we’re aiming for Q3 2015.

Robotoki pays a price for abandoning F2P in favor of premium dev
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/2302 ... um_dev.php

Alex Wawro wrote:L.A.-based indie studio Robotoki has decided to abandon the free-to-play design of its upcoming debut title Human Element and now plans to release the game as a premium product in November 2015.

As a consequence, the studio agreed to end its publishing agreement with free-to-play giant Nexon and has laid off a portion of its staff.

"As the game evolved we realized that the elements that make Human Element the most fun would be hindered by keeping it a free-to-play experience," wrote Robotoki founder Robert Bowling in an email to Gamasutra.

"Therefore, we made the decision to switch to a premium experience for our players; which also meant that working with the premier publisher in free-to-play was no longer the best partnership fit for the game we were creating."

A former Infinity Ward employee, Bowling founded Robotoki in 2012 after resigning from his position as creative strategist for the Call of Duty franchise. Nexon made a strategic investment in the studio in 2013, then agreed to publish Human Element earlier this year.

"Nexon and Robotoki have come to a mutual decision to end their publishing agreement for the game Human Element," stated a Nexon America representative. "As development of the project progressed the direction of the game naturally evolved, and it no longer aligns with the Nexon portfolio."

Bowling says Robotoki has already found a new publisher for Human Element and expects to formally announce the partnership next month.

Rob Crossley wrote:Robotoki, the studio founded by the Infinity Ward developer Robert Bowling, has closed down, casting doubt over the future of its debut project, Human Element.

"This week we have ceased operations at Robotoki and the development of Human Element is on hiatus," Bowling wrote in a statement issued to Joystiq.

"We were actively negotiating a new publishing deal for the premium version of Human Element but unfortunately I was unable to continue to self-fund development until a deal was finalized," he added.

It is unclear if another company is going to step in to publish Human Element, which was revealed in December as a first-person zombie survival game. A month prior to its reveal, Bowling announced that its publishing contract with Nexon had terminated, and that the game was no longer free-to-play.

Bowling worked at Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward from 2006-2012 as the studio's "creative strategist," contributing to games such as 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He quit in March 2012, and established Robotoki later that year.

Bowling said at the time that Robotoki had lined up a new publishing partner for the game, and hoped to make a formal announcement back in December, but no such deal materialised.
