Director Tetsuya Nomura has stated that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is being developed with the aim of challenging what Final Fantasy should be in terms of story and gameplay. He has also stated that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the most seamless game in the Final Fantasy series. Not only will the battle system be seamlessly integrated into the maps and have no battle transitions, but the event scenes will also be seamlessly integrated into gameplay and therefore result in all of them being interactive and playable.

The actual mechanics of the battle system will be a realistic derivation of the battle system used in the Kingdom Hearts series. However, the battle system will also incorporate an evolved form of the third-person shooter elements found in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.

The main character, Noctis, with eleven floating weapons surrounding him.
Nomura has stated that there are two main goals he wants to achieve with Final Fantasy Versus XIII:

1. To provide the most seamless gameplay experience ever seen in a Final Fantasy game.

2. To provide the most realistic story, characters and world ever seen in a Final Fantasy game.

The overall theme of the game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of Tetsuya Nomura's previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and instead opt for a modern and bleak world based on reality. The game will also have real world, global crisis situations happening in it. The atmosphere of the game will have a very serious tone and be more mature and realistic than any past Final Fantasy game.

Tetsuya Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be "realistic and believable as real people" and not "anime-like". In pursuit of this goal, he appointed Jun Akiyama to be the event director due to his experience directing the event scenes in Final Fantasy XII. Tetsuya Nomura believes the cast of Final Fantasy XII felt like real people rather than the anime-like cast one would normally associate with the Final Fantasy series.

Rumor: http://gematsu.com/2013/03/rumor-final- ... ved-to-ps4

Square Enix’s PlayStation 3 action RPG Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been renamed Final Fantasy XV and is in joint development with Sony for PlayStation 4, according to a VGLeaks rumor.

Development on the game was supposedly stopped and moved to Sony’s new console in 2011. The rumor claims Sony’s studios are assisting Square Enix with the game’s assets, “among other tasks.”

The rumor comes hot off the heels of Roen, which designed clothes in Final Fantasy Versus XIII, listing the game as “Final Fantasy 15” on their website.

These two might be the same game:

http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/04/n ... -delicate/

You’ll have to wait a little bit longer for information on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, according to Tetsuya Nomura.

Joining in on the inaugural episode of Square Enix Merchandise Radio (mdRadio), the game director and character designer was on-hand as a special guest. Naturally, the other staff present – including merchandise guru Hidemi Matsuzuka – couldn’t help but ask about when the next details will be revealed for his elusive project.

“If we’re talking about when there will be news, [the merchandise team] put out something on the [Noctis] perfume. That turned into a huge mess, didn’t it?” You may recall Hidemi Matsuzuka’s tweet that sparked a fury of responses – a product that is curiously slated to go on sale this summer.

“It’s a delicate situation within the company. Very delicate.” explains Nomura. “We’ve been quiet for a year now, but the date is already set for our next reveal and we are steadily working toward preparing information for that. Last year we failed to announce anything about the game – to be honest I talked about sharing new information but wasn’t able to and I want to apologize for that.”

“Perhaps the details as to why information couldn’t be released might be touched upon with the next information announcement.” While Nomura apologizes for the delay, rest assured – a concrete date to reveal the game has been decided. Unfortunately, he’s not allowed to say anything just yet and so he would like fans to wait just a little while longer.

After the Roen website leak, there is a lot of speculation that the title has been renamed to Final Fantasy XV and furthermore, moved to Sony’s next generation platform. With E3 less than 2 months away and rumors abound, we can only begin to guess what will be on display. In the meantime, you can listen to the clip in question, or simply stay tuned for more information as it comes in.

http://gematsu.com/2013/06/final-fantas ... arger-epic

Apparently this is now going to be part of a larger "compilation series", with multiple direct sequels:

Nomura: But in the trailer it says, “A World of the Versus Epic”… implying that it was a piece of a larger epic. Final Fantasy XV will come to a single climax, but as for the story, I plan to continue it.

― Are you saying that it has the potential to become a compilation series [like Final Fantasy VII]?

Nomura: When I’m working on something of this density, it becomes something extraordinarily grandiose. I had thought to cut down the volume and density, but if I did, then it wouldn’t be what I wanted it to become. Because of that, I’m considering the idea of a Final Fantasy XV compilation to make it complete.

― In the case of a compilation, I’m sure that fans are hoping for a short release span between each title. What do you think about that?

Nomura: I’ll announce what form it’ll take early on, but since I don’t want to keep you all waiting a long time until the next thing comes out… Well, about this too, when we decided to switch to the next-gen system, we are also investigating online correspondence.

You may remember a batch of Google-translated character bios that surfaced for Final Fantasy 15 last week? Well, these are the official English translations. Enjoy:

Noctis Lucis Caelum: A childhood affliction endowed Noctis, heir apparent to the throne of Lucis, with the mystical power to see a heavenly light, through which he could sense others’ deaths. Noctis rejects rigid royal conventions and acts as somewhat of a renegade, much to the dismay of those who tend to him. Yet while “Noct” may act brash at times, he does so in defense of those loyal to him.

Gladiolus Amicitia: As lord of the noble House Amicitia, Gladiolus continues a line sworn to protect the crown. “Gladio” shares a friendship with Noctis that transcends birth and title, and his loyalty to his liege is born not of duty, but of brotherhood.

Ignis Scientia: Ever the unwavering voice of reason, Ignis was weaned on shrewd logic and a classical education from boyhood so that he might one day counsel the would-be king, Noctis. He applies the deep mutual understanding and trust they have built over time to help smooth over Noctis’s brusqueness with others.

Prompto Argentum: The puckish playboy Prompto befriended Noctis in his school days. He wears a chip on his shoulder as an outsider to the royal circle, but remains eager to do all he can for the cause.

Cor Leonis: A living legend of Lucian lore, Lord Commander Cor Leonis’s devotion to the art of war is surpassed only by that to his king. Little love is lost between the ill-starred stalwart and Noctis’s retinue, yet honor binds him to keep watch over the group all the same.

Translation of what they say at 5:52 doesn't sound promising.

You're just been evading the entire time...

これはまぁ、細かいゲームシステム今回ちょっとさけますけれど、ずっと防御のボタンを押し続けると、回避をし続けてくれる
We won't go into specifics about the battle system today, but if you hold down the block button it will keep dodging for you.

Meet Hajime Tabata, Final Fantasy's latest saviour
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014- ... st-saviour

Martin Robinson wrote:There's a physicality to Tabata's games - something seen in the more grounded fantasy of Type-0 and in the more direct combat of Crisis Core - that's retained and underlined in Final Fantasy XV. "When we were making the transition, we sat down and I discussed with Nomura the game," he says. "I felt that I wanted to shift it more to be more realistic. For example, when you're battling a really strong boss like a behemoth, if you go at it from just the front you're going to get hit with his counter-attacks. You have to think about baiting it to attack forward, but then break its stance and attack it from the side. I wanted to make it so you're fighting a real animal, but with easy-to-manipulate controls as well as dramatic effects. My basis was to keep it grounded in reality."

Other elements seem to have crept into Tabata's Final Fantasy XV, too. Open worlds aren't exclusive to western games - an expansive overworld to explore has been at the backbone of the very best Final Fantasy games - but its implementation in Final Fantasy XV, where characters traverse epic plains in an automobile, seems to have some deference to the open worlds of Grand Theft Auto and its like. Tabata's happy to acknowledge those influences.

"Ever since I took a central position for the Xbox One and PS4 Final Fantasy XV, I would make the judgement call based on my personal taste, which did lean towards western games, and then tweak the visual aspects as well as the combat aspects," he says. "Rather than it being influenced by western games, it's more my personal taste. I like that style, and I wanted it incorporated in the game."

Tabata's also in pursuit of a Final Fantasy that's not as overwhelming as its predecessors, and one that can be enjoyed by a broader audience. "With Final Fantasy XV, I do want to make it more casual," he says. "Of course the depth of the game is going to be there, but I want to make it so players can easily experience the satisfaction of the depth of the game." There's an option to set that car to drive itself, allowing players to sit back and take in the sights - although there is also an option to drive it manually, should they want to engage more fully with the world."

"Another example is in the combat," explains Tabata. "With the hardware specifications of the newer consoles, it's possible to set it up so you have different enemies and different choices of attacks you can enter in, but I want to simplify that. It'll basically be a one-button action, and the AI intuitively outputs an action that kind of satisfies, gives you that instant gratification, and it connects with the simple touch of a button. I myself am not getting any younger. I don't want to be frantically pushing buttons. I also want to utilise the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves."

Tech analysis: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... h-analysis

John Linneman wrote:Ultimately, Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae is an impressive preview of what's to come, limited only by the unfinished, unoptimised nature of its rendering technology. The engine displays all of the expected next-generation features while bringing its own unique flavour to the experience. As Square-Enix's first internally developed open world game, the attention to detail really is remarkable and easily comparable to the best from Rockstar. Compared to other sandbox fantasy games from the last few years, Final Fantasy 15 really feels like a true next-generation leap.

The real question is whether or not the development team will be able to get a handle on the game's performance problems by release. With so much time until then we're certainly hopeful that they can reach the 1080p30 target, but based on this showing in this demo, we still have concerns. On PlayStation 4 it certainly seems achievable, but the Xbox One version runs at a low enough resolution and frame-rate that the optimisation effort is frankly immense. We have no doubt that the final game will look and run better on both platforms, but can they really ramp it up to a full 1080p 30fps when the current level of performance is so lacklustre? We're cautiously optimistic. Still, as a bonus included with another interesting Final Fantasy title - Type-0 HD - Episode Duscae is an interesting and enjoyable experience that's well worth jumping into.
