Sal Romano wrote:Techland, the studio behind Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide, has announced a third zombie game, Dying Light, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2014.

To be published by Warner Bros., the game is a first-person, action survival horror game with a “vast” and “dynamic” open world, day-night cycle, free running mechanics, and weapon-crafting.

During the day, players will scavenge an “expansive” urban environment overrun by a vicious outbreak for supplies to survive and craft weapons. At night, the infected become more aggressive and dangerous, with the most frightening predators appearing just after sundown.

New trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeIobd0zgCo

And a blog post from the producer: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2014/02/ ... er-debuts/

Tymon Smektala wrote:Hello, everyone! I’m Tymon Smektala, the producer of Dying Light – Techland’s latest first-person, action survival-horror game coming this year. I’d like to use this opportunity to tell you more about Dying Light and its Humanity trailer that we released today.

Let’s start with a simple statement: we’ve gotten accustomed to mindless zombie killing, right? Movies, TV series, books, and of course games – no matter what the medium, zombies became the cannon fodder of our times. After all, no one should bat an eye at taking down thousands of already dead, walking corpses. Or should they? In Dying Light, we make things a little bit more complicated.

With our latest Humanity trailer, we wanted to present a deeper vision of what a zombie epidemic would mean for humankind. “Epidemic” being the crucial word here. Mutating into a zombie is a result of infection, not some kind of a supernatural transformation, but simply a disease, just like flu, pneumonia, or SARS.

This realisation helped us create one of the most outstanding features of Dying Light: its setting. A quarantined city just several weeks after the outbreak.

It’s an intriguing locale that shows the horrible reality of living in the quarantine zone infested with the raging infected. “We were doctors, teachers, fathers, sons” – says the trailer’s narrator. People who just two months or so earlier had families, homes, and jobs, had to become scavengers and hunters in order to survive. Now their everyday routine consists of gathering supplies, repairing barricades, fighting for medicines – struggling to stay alive, to put it simply. In this world, things that we take for granted are in fact precious commodities.

When traversing the city of Harran, the player will encounter survivors in a variety of situations. You may find them hidden, trapped or surrounded by the infected in the most unlikely places, calling hopelessly for help. Your help. It’s up to you whether you’ll decide to come to their aid or not. Lending a helping hand, be it out of kind heart or want for reward, is always a risk, though. The grim reality of Harran doesn’t allow any safe choices.

“But so they were,” continues the narrator. In the quarantine zone, the line between the infected and the sane is very thin. The player should remember that not only the survivors were common people like you and me months earlier – so were the infected. Imagine that in order to stay alive, you could be forced to shoot your family doctor, chop a colleague from your office to pieces, or leave your best friend for certain death.

It’s either you or them. But you should never forget that they’re not walking corpses – they’re just infected, although as of yet there’s no cure for their illness. What would you do if there was one?

Haha jesus christ. If they don't trim the protagonist's fingernails I might not be able to play this game. How ugly. It's bad enough when I see it in ads or old movies, but in a fucking first-person game that I am supposed to be playing for 20+ hours? And it's a shame because it looks like a good game.

Dying Light Release Timing Announcement

Dear Gamers,

We know you’ve been waiting on a Dying Light release date for quite some time now. After careful consideration, we have decided to release our upcoming game in February 2015. Since this means Dying Light will launch a few months later than originally planned, we feel obliged to explain the reasons that influenced this important decision.

When we started the development of Dying Light, we were committed to innovation. We wanted to give you a freedom of movement unprecedented in open world games. After many improvements and months of hard work, we have now come so close to realizing our initial vision we feel we cannot stop before it is ready.

We believe the Natural Movement element of our game will change what you expect from the genre, and we don’t want to sacrifice any of its potential by releasing too early. This quality-focused thinking underlines all our development choices and we hope you share our belief that the gameplay must always come first.

The new date ensures that we can fully realize our vision of an innovative open world game. We won’t need to make compromises or trade-offs on any of the five platforms we’re working on. For you, it means an outstanding, original game that makes the wait more than worthwhile.

Finally, we would like to thank our publishing partner, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which fully supports our decision. It’s a real pleasure to work in an environment where quality is universally accepted as the top priority. We believe that this is the only way to make truly incredible games.

We also have an additional announcement for you: starting next month at E3 2014, we’ll be telling you much more about all the exciting features and different aspects of Dying Light. Stay tuned!

Dying Light Coming Sooner Than Expected

Techland is really excited to announce that Dying Light, its highly-anticipated action survival game, will hit the stores in 2015 on January 27th in the Americas, January 28th in Australia and New Zealand, and January 30th in Europe and Asia.

Dying Light can be pre-ordered from the game's official website. These pre-orders come with a free DLC mode called Be the Zombie. In this competitive asymmetric multiplayer mode, you invade other players’ games as the Night Hunter – an ultimate zombie with a unique set of deadly skills. By playing as the Night Hunter, you turn into a fast, agile and dangerous predator, whose objective is to hunt down human survivors.

The creators of Dying Light recently explained the game’s revolutionary Natural Movement system in the first Dev Diary video, recently released. Designed internally by Techland, Natural Movement empowers the player to traverse the fictional city of Harran with unprecedented ease and precision, seamlessly connecting parkour-style moves with brutal fighting.

Dying Light is a first-person, action survival game set in a vast and dangerous open world. During the day, players roam an urban environment devastated by a mysterious epidemic, scavenging for supplies and crafting weapons to help defeat the hordes of mindless, flesh-hungry enemies the plague has created. At night, the hunter becomes the prey as the infected grow in strength and aggression – even more lethal are the nocturnal, inhuman predators that leave their hives to feed. Players need to use all their skills and any available means to survive until dawn.

I am looking forward to playing this with people on Steam, but I'd like us to tackle Dead Island first because if we play them the other way around Dead Island may feel hard to enjoy.

Sal Romano wrote:Warner Bros. and Techland have released the reveal trailer for Dying Light‘s newly announced expansion, ‘The Following,’ a story-based expansion set in a new area “as big as the original maps from Dying Light combined.”

Here’s the outline, via Techland:

‘The Following’ sees Kyle Crane travel to a hazardous outback ruled by mysterious and fanatical cultists whose beliefs have unnerving connections with the zombie outbreak.

To get close to the cult and unravel their secrets, players will need to earn the trust of the locals. Through various missions and tasks, players will be able to choose their own path for infiltrating the inner circles of the cultists. In order to succeed in this harsh countryside, players will also gain access to fully customizable and upgradable dirt buggies. With its own unique skill tree, players will be able to traverse the vast expanse of the Harran countryside in what is their deadliest weapon yet.

The expansion is still to be dated, but it will be priced at $14.99 when it launches. It is also included with the Dying Light Season Pass.

William Shakesman wrote:(EDIT: Post-game realizations: The survivor level determines the quality of the leveled weapons you get. The reason why early game zombies last longer than your weapons do is because the leveled loot goes from 20 dmg to 700 dmg. There is no way to balance that and DL doesn't even try. Post game, you are one shotting everything.

The hammer bosses have terribly broken hit boxes. Their swings hit at least three feet beyond their actual point of impact in every direction.

Explosions still instakil you and they never become not stupid. DL loves loves LOVES throwing exploding zombies just behind doors.

In the end, the ragdoll zombies are IMMENSE fun. Caving zombies heads in, cutting their heads off and kicking their corpses over the edge, drop kicking them with all the force of a wrecking ball, this NEVER gets old. It's just that Techland still loves all the same utterly stupid stat-heavy crap they threw in Dead Island.)

Dying Light is a game you play to have something to play. Don't get me wrong, the parkour and climbing is better than Mirror's Edge, which a lot of crazy leaps and bounds. The zombie open world is like nothing you've seen and does an excellent job of keeping you off the ground and looting houses. The night time where you are sneaking around super powered mutants is always a joy, especially on hard where their vision cones are gone.

The downside is... for every one of these mechanics where the feel is just right, the game fumbles something else twice as bad. Zombies have too much HP early game until the weapons start arbitrarily leveling up. The Dead Island loot treadmill is thankfully gone but there still is a completely unnecessary leveling system. Weapons don't last long enough to bother crafting mods for them and that is 90% of your crafting and gathering game. You can have a zombie down on the ground and bash its head against the pavement a dozen times and it will get back up while you are catching your breath.

Human combat is even worse. Humans take forever to kill and cannot be knocked down or stunned with ease so the game just comes to a total stop when you have to fight some. The hammer bosses are so easy but take even LONGER to kill and are forced kills for a lot of quests.

Exploding zombies are instant kills at any level of HP and have stupid range. Travelling at night? Open the wrong door? Back to the respawn. A random shooting human will do the same thing to you too and he's part of the quest.

There is no death penalty to speak of. Same as Dead Island. Just a slight loss of XP. The game apparently tacitly understand that there is no "skillful" play of Dying Light so it decides not to punish mistakes.

There are no interesting quests, which is not so bad as the game is really in "get around zombies, loot buildings, climb things" That gameplay loop is pretty satisfying.

In the end, it's a solid, workmanlike game. Fumbled pretty much all the little things so Dying Light will never be a great game, merely a good one, but what it does do it does well. Give it a shot. There's not much else that has tried what it has.
