Star Ocean 5 Details on Main Characters and Battle System

Square Enix revealed Star Ocean 5 is in development for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and that they’re working together with tri-Ace on the game. This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine shares more details on the upcoming RPG.

Star Ocean 5 takes place on a planet called Feycreed, which is 6,000 light-years away from the planet Earth. The full title is Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness.

  • Fidel Camus: The protagonist. He specializes in swordsmanship, and maintains the peace and order of the town.
  • Miki Sorvesta: The heroine. She’s a childhood friend of the protagonist, and loves Fedel like an older brother.
  • Lilia: A young girl who has lost her feelings and memories.

The screenshots for the game show a blonde swordsman and a blue-haired witch or magic girl fighting in combat. Battles take place in real-time seamless fashion, and attacking methods change according to the distance between you and the enemy. You can perform combos by inputting multiple button presses.

In addition to having plenty of event scenes like in past Star Ocean titles, there will be seamless events where enemies will attack you in the middle of some events. If party members get captured by enemies in these events, it can change the story and ending of the game.

Characters are designed by Akiman, while Shuichi Kobayashi is the producer. Meanwhile, Hiro Ogawa is the director, and Yoshiharu Gotanda is the lead programmer for Star Ocean 5.

This week’s issue of Famitsu magazine also has some quotes from the game’s developers.

“With the thought of putting my life into Star Ocean, I decided to change my position to producer (having previously been in charge of advertisement until now),” said producer Suichi Kobayashi. “I want to color Star Ocean 5 with the essence of Star Ocean 3.

As far as the subtitle of “Integrity and Faithlessness” goes, lead programmer Yoshiharu Gotonda said that it has multiple meanings, and you’ll get a better understanding of it by playing it until the very end.

Kobayashi added, “This time around, we wanted to give the longtime fans of the series a sense of reassurance, so we had the title logo designed similarly to that of Star Ocean 3.”

“The basics of the battles will be similar to those of past titles, where you’ll control a character and aim for a target for a one-on-one battle,” said director Hiroshi Ogawa. “On the other hand, boss fights will be a little different from the regular battles, where all the party members will fight the boss in a different way.”

When asked about the future of the series, Kobayashi stated that he’d like to see the series keep going. In addition to making more for the fans of the series, he’s aiming to make a complete title that newer fans can enjoy, too.

During the interview, it was revealed that Star Ocean 5 is in development using the PlayStation 3 version as a base, while development on the PlayStation 4 version progresses alongside. The team is currently thinking about doing something with the PS4′s Share function.

“We’re not thinking about DLC that concerns the game’s story, or anything along the lines of having a ‘complete version’,” said Kobayashi. “Our true intention is the least amount possible, when it comes to things that might upset fans.”

Star Ocean 5 is in development for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Its progress is currently at about 30%.

The game’s prologue

Do the depths of space forbid peace for mankind?

Centuries after leaving Earth, after a multitude of trials, with the creation and spread of the ‘Galactic Federation,’ humanity was on the verge of unified order and peace.

But the embers of conflict have begun to burn again.

Over 6,000 light years from Earth, on the unsettled planet, ‘Feycreed.’

Just as so many times before, the waves of history begin from a remote planet.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness will launch for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in winter 2015, and for PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe in 2016, Square Enix announced.

The keyword in developing Star Ocean 5 was seamlessness, according to Square Enix. Battles and event scenes will occur seamlessly. Of course, in addition to these seamless dynamic event scenes, there will also be traditional cutscenes.

Here’s Square Enix’s official description:

Square Enix wrote:The latest chapter of the highly anticipated sci-fi role-playing game (RPG) series will be arriving in 2016. Developed by tri-Ace, the celebrated studio behind the STAR OCEAN series, and with character design by akiman (Akira Yasuda), the game is an epic adventure that introduces seamless transitions between gameplay and dynamic cut scenes, creating a new level of depth of immersive storytelling in video games.

On of the new details extracted from Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness‘ E3 trailer were the six-character parties. However, the game will actually have parties of more than six characters, Kobayashi confirmed.

“Maybe the scene you looked at [in the new trailer] had six characters, but in actual gameplay there will be more than six,” Kobayashi explained. “In more traditional RPGs, as the story unfolds, you get more and more people joining the party. Sometimes, at some point, if you have more than four or six, you have to choose who to form the party with. In this game we don’t have that. We’re going to make all party members featured and physical in the field.”

Kobayashi explains that they want to avoid forcing players to pick and choose which members of the cast they keep in their party when they meet new characters. He wouldn’t reveal the exact number of maximum party members, but said that it will be more than six, and “depending on the situation, the phase of the battle, the numbers will be different.”

“In some parts of the story, sometimes the party members engage in a fight together with some sort of semi-party members who will not completely join the party, but still participate in battles,” Kobayashi said.

Kobayashi also confirmed the return of Private Action scenarios, item creation, and so on. He also added that with so many characters in battle, the AI is going to be “very complex.” You’ll even be able to customize the AI to an extent.
