Dr. Gerry Coulter wrote:Not only did the Allies defeat the evil of the Nazi war criminals [and those in Japan] – they did so by acting (as McNamara confessed) as war criminals themselves. In 1944 when the bombing of civilian populations was being perpetrated on an unprecedented scale, long after it was understood that they were not significantly advancing the war effort toward victory – I believe they continued as an expression of evil. The message was clear to Japan, Italy, and Germany – you may be evil – but we are capable of as much evil, or more, than you are. When we reflect on the defeat of the Nazis and the measures taken in this victory we would do well to acknowledge that the Nazi evil was defeated because, as it only could be, it encountered an enemy more evil than itself.

I love Coulter. He is the only currently active intellectual I can stand.

Almost all of these links were a giant waste of time. The only two noteworthy exceptions are:

1. The Tale of Tales blogpost (with a lovely seizure motif, keep refreshing the page) for providing ammo against the "gameplay" non-term:

Thomas Grip wrote:While gameplay at the core of game making, it comes with a lot of baggage and makes certain meanings harder to realize in the medium. The most striking issue is the entire failure mechanism that is used in just about any game. You try a certain task, you fail and then have to repeat it. As described in other posts, this can be especially damaging in horror games, where repeating scenes seriously lessens the experience. This mechanism also imposes limits on the player’s rate of progress and effectively tells the player: “Either you complete this or you will not proceed!”. Other baggage include the notion that gameplay must be fun and the need to constantly pose challenges. What I mean with the last point is that players assume that a game will always keep them occupied with some kind of obstacle to overcome. This leads to very little interactive content that is added for its intrinsic sake alone. Instead a game’s interactive content almost always have some connection to the goals of the gameplay.

It would have been easier to just skip to the second sentence there, wouldn't it? Also, "goals of the gameplay" and "gameplay at the core of game making". This guy takes the cake.

2. The Penny Arcade thread about Ubisoft's DRM scheme, the debate being an endless regurgitation of the same tired point. I was hoping that the PC Game Piracy article might push the thread along, but no luck.

It did contain this nugget:

subedii wrote:A little Aside on Silent Hunter 5:

I only just realised that this DRM is also going to be applying to Silent Hunter 5, which I was previously looking forward to.

Now let's actually LOOK at Silent Hunter 5, because I feel it's a relatively unique case amongst the games Ubi's going to be publishing. It's an established but extremely niche franchise of games. It does not now, nor has it ever been a big seller. The market it's selling to is very small but also very dedicated to the franchise, it's practically the embodiment of niche PC gaming.

This is the one move they could have taken to completely destroy the fanbase for the franchise short of screwing up the game itself. A game like SH5 doesn't depend on huge marketing budgets, it doesn't depend on production values and endorsements by .50 Cent. It'll never have those, and it'll never be trendy.

It depends on its following amongst a fairly hardcore fanbase, and having a good relationship with that fanbase. It's how the series has survived to date despite being a game, when you get down to it, about using calculus and stop watches to plot intercept courses.

People tend to laugh at "angry men venting on the internet", but a game like SH5 literally cannot afford to tick off that small group of players that discuss these things on forums. Because that hardcore group of enthusiasts makes up the majority of their playerbase and sales. The SH5 forums are pretty much abuzz already with a lot of venting, and plenty of people saying they've cancelled their orders. For other major games this can typically be safely ignored because the majority of buyers either don't know or don't care. Here, the same people complaining are largely the same people who were your key audience.

So I guess what I'm saying is, the Silent Hunter series has existed for 15 years because of its dedicated following, and surprisingly it's this move that may actually put the franchise (and I apologise for the unintended pun) at risk of sinking.

No idea what this is supposed to mean.

People seem to have got the idea that it's okay to come to my forum to posture. Let's see how many of them I have to ban before they learn otherwise.

They're asking “Is Games Art?“ and start the discussion with Leigh Rogers' essay. It is also up on the front page.

There must also have been a /v/ thread, judging by the number of hits the site got from there in the last few hours.

I am glad I decided to accept Leigh Rogers' offer to contribute to Insomnia. He (she? it?) seems to be an up-and-coming star of videogame journalism. If he keeps it up like this he might even eclipse in popularity his illustrious parents.

Thanks, man. I appreciate your words.

Here’s hoping I can keep my cool and remain calm while struggling to meet such high standards of discourse!

Dude, I came across your blog just the other day because you linked me on your sidebar. No offense, but I don't read your blog -- not because there's something wrong with it (from a quick skim-through I'd say you are well above the level of the average videogame blogger, though the fact that you do not actually deal with games but with deconstructing some casual fuckwad's idiotic chatter takes you down several notches...), but because I simply do not read blogs anymore. At most I skim them, and then only on extremely rare occasions.

Almost funny enough to make me unban him. Almost. And for the record, I have banned several hundred people so far, so if the reason is not recorded in a forum post somewhere I obviously do not remember it. Most likely he made his post in a random heap of sentences instead of using paragraphs. Most people that get banned at the "Introduce Yourself" stage get banned for this reason.

Yes, like for example how it was torn apart in your forum by your claims to it being unsupportable which you will be supporting while I am holding my breath.

Meh, reservations or not, the fact remains that all you little fagots cannot help from passing back and forth between you everything I write, again and again and again. Stop your fucking whining and sit down and face the issues. How about that, bitches? Try it for a change, why don't you. It might grow on you. If you think I'm going to waste my time arguing with your opinion that women are less intelligent and basically there for child-rearing you're even more delusional than I thought, and that would take some doing. You actually think you're a genius for god's sake.

Here's an experiment for you Alex. Write a critical piece about a female journalist (lol, bitch, etc.) without resorting to calling her a whore, implying she was raped and deserved it, that you'd totally hit the bitch, and so on - just make your points about her writing. Then scour the net (you do this anyway, so no extra effort) for anyone linking about it. Compare the number of links you got for that piece to the one you did about Leigh.

And when you find out that it's only your ALL CAPS SWEARY RAGE that attracts attention, and that everyone couldn't care less about your "brilliant" opinions, feel free to cry about how everyone is just too stupid and you're the next Nietzsche honest. After all it's your ego and your echo chamber, you may as well.

I've already done this on a number of subjects, and the articles concerned have since become the no. 1 articles on their respective subjects ever. I'll just give two examples:

Arcade Culture
http://insomnia.ac/commentary/arcade_culture/

On Role-playing Games
http://insomnia.ac/commentary/on_role-playing_games/

which by the way are now also the most widely read and most widely linked articles on videogames on the internet.

I could have done it for the hobags too, and the resulting article would no doubt have attracted just as much attention as the Cocksucking one, but without being anywhere near as enjoyable -- which is why I chose the course of action that I did.

So yeah, little dude. YOU lose -- again.

And since we are on the subject of my craving for attention, I thought I'd add this to the pile to pique your envy even further:

Kastanj wrote:A very precise, very adroit and very unforgiving intellectual calling himself "icycalm" or Alex Kierkegaard runs this site, where more is written in the forums than on the front page. His ideas and view of gaming is more than enough for anyone that wants to actually know anything about what games actually are and which ones are worth playing. He has also studied (and *understood*) the writings of Baudrillard, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein and probably some others, and is an authority there as well (naturally, his unusually high confidence will be seen as bluster intended to intimidate and dazzle others, but he walks the walk that he talks). Assume from the start that he is more intelligent and capable of well-founded thought than you, and that he has played enough videogames to be more of an authority on the subject as well.

He has no time for those who don't show humility and only write on what they are genuinely knowledgeable about. He treats his forum like a home rather than a public square, which is actually refreshing, and reflects his view of the zeitgeist as run over with mediocre thinking and relativism, where everyone has to get along and be "equal". So don't write anything that you haven't thought through and applied all possible criticism to in advance, or you will be verbally abused.

He calls himself the "number one videogame expert in the world", and while this is quite a claim he certainly offers a corpus of writing (reviews, essays, forum posts) on games that really has no match anywhere else, if only in quality and depth of criticism. He is writing some collections of essays on games, which will not receive the attention they deserve (not that the author wants to be read by people who aren't worthy in his eyes).

icycalm is simply very good at thinking well and then exhibiting this through intelligent, persuasive and efficient writing. Any complaints about (or exultations over) his particular tone and personality are completely irrelevant.

I never said neither implied this. You just made it up because you have poor reading comprehension skills.

Brendan Caldwell wrote:Kierkegaard appears to take the latter response to NGJ, since he states that it is invariably egotistical.

Again, all this is shit that you made up that has nothing to do with me. All I was saying in that article is that NGJ writers do not have the game as their first priority, and therefore their writing will necessarily be inferior AS REGARDS GAME ANALYSIS to OTHER writings which DO have the game as their first priority. Now whether the priority of the NGJ people is increasing their prestige or finding a cure for cancer is irrelevant from my perspective (the perspective, that is to say, of one who is interested in game analysis) -- for the result in both cases is the same: inferior critical analysis.

Brendan Caldwell wrote:Perhaps Kierkegaard considers only prestigious and intelligent writers forgivable in indulging their ego

Again shit you made up. The reality is the exact opposite: whoever writes without fully and completely "including their ego" writes worthless trash that will be forgotten within a few years at best if not instantly. All this notwithstanding the fact that it is simply physically impossible to write without "including your ego" for the simple fact that IT IS THE EGO WHICH WRITES.

Brendan Caldwell wrote:I genuinely enjoy the writing of Chris Lepine and Alex Kierkegaard, there is immeasurable room for their writing in this town too.

lol. I've no idea who the other person is, but not only is there "room" for my writing "too", but my writing is the ONLY writing FOR WHICH THERE EXISTS ROOM, PERIOD. Time will bear me out on this, and in fact to a great extent it has already done so.

In the comments section, Insomnia reader Anarkex harshly criticises the article's "art game" STG. Derek Yu responds with an insult:

Derek Yu wrote:I imagine you sitting there, hoping that icycalm somehow reads your comments and nods his head in approval. "This one is strong enough to carry my seed within him," he'd say. "Go forth and destroy all the artfags in my name, warrior! That someday I may do you the honor of letting you sit by my side in a Japanese arcade, playing Japanese games with me, and achieving the highest of high scores together. In Japan."

The following exchanges cover predictable pseudo-intellectualism, attacks on criticism itself, the history of art, and some decent replies.

There are, in general, two movements of video game discussion. The first discuss the experience of playing a game. This is best epitomized by Tim Rogers and the “New Games Journalism” movement (if a disconnected, disorganized collection of thoughts with no clear focus can be called a movement). On the other hand, we have those who focus on the way that the game actual functions, the mechanics (it’s not the best descriptor, but It’ll do). Alex Kierkegaard and his website http://insomnia.ac/ tend to represent this point of view (and in very harsh language).

Yes, because the experience has nothing to do with the mechanics, lol. And where are the aesthetics, fagot? You lost them, didn't you?

To bring this into modern philosophy, the former is Heidegger-like, while the latter is Wittgenstein-like.

"Modern philosophy" is Heidegger and Wittgenstein, lol. And Tim Rogers is Heidegger-like, lol.

Fagot.

Actually, there might be a valid analogy there. Inasmuch, that is to say, as Heidegger was a charlatan.

One aspect of the Mario generation that strikes me in particular is the amount of intellectual and academic energy it expends towards coming to a deeper -- in some cases transcendent -- understanding of video games:

The "transcendent" is a link that goes to my frontpage. Yet another fuckface who hasn't understood anything. What's more, he links me in the same sentence in which he links Kotaku. And he ends the whole thing by some fagotry about planting trees instead of playing games, lol.

Lols it justifies itself. Here's one justification: I argued color reducing was not "bad", proved they couldn't tell, and it took them two years to accept it. Here's another justification: my essay is heavily based on the insomnia forum essay ([link]), which is well regarded by people who aren't faggots. But the most important justification is that I can draw and you can't. It's not the subject matter that's the problem. You aren't even good at drawing pokemon. The essay is about people like you who can't draw and who can't understand any theory other than "being angry is bad" and "everyone's opinions are equally valid". No talent know it alls.

The main writer has a tendency to be 'quite' militant in his views (especially the 'games as art' debate) and as a result seems to have upset just about everybody in the world attached to the games industry.

Then you might actually relieve yourself of the need to "play" the tedious screen savers of Gregory Weir and Jason Rohrer. And it doesn't end there. You'd be able to stop calling yourself a "neo-luddite" just because you like ironic pixel graphics. You'd be able to see that Cactus isn't a "punk" designer standing up to "the establishment" and is just a guy dicking around with Game Maker and churning out stuff that nobody would have bought for the Atari 2600 30 years ago.

Most importantly, you might learn to write a real critique instead of waxing nostalgic and going off into pointless digressions for four or five fucking paragraphs, which almost certainly wouldn't be littered with useless phrases like "intelligently elegant".
