Wikipedia wrote:It is considered to be a successor to Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Patriots, which has been cancelled. Like all other titles in the series, it will focus heavily on team play and realism. However, there are major differences to older versions of the game, featuring a heavy multiplayer focus and destructible environments. A trailer at E3 2014 demonstrated a hostage rescue scenario and the game has initially received positive reactions.

At the E3 demonstration we saw an example of multi-player teamplay in a "Hostage Release" mode. Players formed two 5 person teams: "Team Raven" were the attacking Rainbow 6 police type SWAT team who had to enter a large suburban house to rescue a hostage; "Team Rogue" were the defending hostage takers who fortified the house to prevent the SWAT team escorting the hostage to safety. After each 5 minute round the player team swap roles. For the SWAT team there seems to be primary weapon sets depending on selected roles in the team: 2 with sub-machine guns / assault carbines with suppressor; one with ballistic shield and pistol; one with a shotgun; one was a sniper who located outside the house. The Rainbow 6 team have flash grenades; breaching charges which can blow holes in walls and ceilings and a number of surveillance drones which can be deployed before the round starts to locate the hostage or during the match. The Rainbow Six team members could "vote" between different entry points e.g. garage or roof - rope down from a helicopter. The hostage takers can choose different locations for the hostage's initial location. The defenders use the pre-match time to reinforce the structure of the walls, block windows and doors by screens, place rolls of razor wire, plant explosive booby traps. The hostage takers seem to have a range of shotguns, sub-machine guns, pistols, can throw C4 explosive charges, can deploy moveable bullet proof shields. Team members and the hostage can be given first aid if wounded.

Time is a big issue and the priority is to release or keep hold of the hostage for five minutes or to kill all the enemy team. More gameplay types will be revealed in the final game but the developers say that all combat will be urban / interior Close Quarter Battle (CQB).

The Starter Edition goes for only €14,99 on Steam right now, compared to €39,99 for the full game, and I was tempted to get it before I read that comment. I still don't know what's wrong with it though.

The Starter Edition only gives you a couple of Operators and requires you to grind a ton to unlock the others (15 hours per Operator apparently). You can also just buy them, but in that case you're better off getting the Standard Edition to begin with.

Ubisoft wrote:STARTER EDITION

- Instant Unlock:
2 random Operators from a pool of the most intuitive Operators at entry level: Rook, Sledge, Ash, Fuze, Mute, and Smoke.
600 R6 Credits to spend on either additional Operators (recommended) or other additional content

- Slower unlocking of the remaining 16 Original Operators (GIGN, SAS, GSG9, SPETSNAZ, FBI):
12,500 Renown or 300 R6 Credits to unlock 1 Operator
Approx. 15 hours to unlock 1 operator using in-game Renown

- Access to all Post-Launch Operators (JTF2, Navy SEALs and upcoming CTUs):
25,000 Renown or 600 R6 Credits to unlock 1 Operator
Season Pass unlocks all Post-Launch Operators

STANDARD EDITION

- Access to 20 original Operators through minimum playtime (GIGN, SAS, GSG9, SPETSNAZ, FBI):
Between 500 to 2000 Renown to unlock 1 Operator
Approx. 0.5- 2 hours to unlock 1 operator

- Access to all Post-Launch operators (JTF2, Navy SEALs and upcoming CTUs):
25,000 Renown or 600 R6 credits to unlock 1 Operator
Season Pass unlocks all Post-Launch Operators

Played 3.2 hours with recoil. It's a 4/5 at minimum. Levels are a little claustrophobic, but I am not sure that this is a bad thing, because the moment the action begins it doesn't end until the round ends. Great sound design and great atmosphere in the levels -- nothing at all like the monotonous grey-brown muck of Counter-Strike, so I definitely enjoy being in the levels.

The unlocking/customization and general UI work EXACTLY like For Honor, which is no bad thing at all, but I think there is significantly more depth in everything: in the Operator options, the tactics in the levels, and so on.

I think that if I had been playing with a full team, I might have been saying 5/5 right now. But I am having a lot of fun even just playing with recoil, and besides most people in this game have headsets and quite a few of them use the in-game voice chat, so at times it almost feels like we are a team.

Got a few kills and felt great. Very excited to unlock a few Operators and settle on some, and on some tactics. Also excited to reach level 20 and unlock Ranked mode. I think I am level 4 or 5 now.

3+ hours of full team games with recoil (POV), me, infern, Robo and Mat: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/133025039

It's our first time playing this game with a full team, and it is tremendously better than playing with randoms in the team (though I have to admit playing with randoms does offer its own type of fun moments).

I put it on the VGART list. It really is that good. Before I thought 5v5 was boring, but no, it's just Counter-Strike that's boring.

From Discord:

infernovia wrote:Alright, finally figured out how to download the ultra textures
Apparently works fine for 4GB cards up to 1440p
it's 37 GB though, so it's gonna take a while.
Here are the steps:

1. Go to library
2. Click on R6S
3. Untick the box with the texture pack dlc
4. Run R6S
5. Tick the box with the texture pack dlc
6. Let it download.
I believe you have to actually "activate" it from here though: http://store.steampowered.com/app/377560/

This game is a hell of a lot of fun. I thought it would just be Counter-Strike with destructible cover but there's more to it than that. Each round really has the atmosphere of being in a siege (crouched in a corner hoping the wall behind you doesn't blow up if you are defending, or upside-down rappeling through windows while your friends smash through doors on the other side of the building if you're attacking) and can become incredibly tense.

The environments all look beautiful, and are very complicated in their design too so that every round with the objective in a slightly different place plays very differently. Especially for us since none of us know the maps well at all. There's also some nice variety between maps -- most of them fall into the category of "big building with a basement" and can be tackled quite similarly, but then there's also e.g. a plane map with very limited entry points and a favela map that's complete chaos, which demand slightly different approaches.

The movement/ gunplay all feels very slick and polished, even down to the more 'unusual' fps mechanics like riot shields, rappeling and leaning. The best aspect of the game though is the tactics, and coordinating stuff with your team. It feels like a little 4-minute version of PlanetSide.

Seconded, it does everything CS does and turns it up to 11. Two things stood out to me the first time I loaded up the game:

1. Sound design is phenomenal, it really sounds like you're in a building getting methodically ripped apart. Every sound just adds another drop of anxiety and excitement. In CS, you really only have footsteps and weapon noises to rely on. In Siege, you're listening for footsteps on the walls and ceilings, barricades being smashed, devices being planted, drones driving by, and even character voices. There's so much more to be listening for. The atmospheric music is great and it's a nice reminder that some serious shit is about to go down in between rounds.

2. Tactical options feel endless with the many operators, gadgets, and randomized objective placements. You'll never attack an objective the same, there's far more change happening (than a bank account, Rainbow spares no expense for their CTs, lol) between rounds that keep the action tense even during the preparation phases.

Qpo, get the game! You'll fucking love it! That goes for everyone else that plays CS too.

Honestly, CS with destructible environments pretty much sold me the game. But it's not just that:

- You can rappel down like a ninja, upside down, and clear out a room.
- You have a ton of operators with a lot of unique skills.
- Thermite blows open metal walls.
- Drone user can scout out enemy.
- Counter intelligence (i.e. signal jammers)
- Traps like trip wires.
- Smooth movement that doesn't feel like it's 1990. I.e. vaulting over desks.
- Cool settings, like airplane, snow fortress, etc.
- And it bears repeating, destructible environments.

I don't think CS had any of that.

Year 2 Season 2: Operation Health
https://rainbow6.ubisoft.com/siege/en-U ... ion-health

Rainbow Six Siege Blog wrote:As announced during the Six Invitational, game health is our priority. To achieve this goal we took the decision to fully dedicate the next three months to improving our game. This means pushing back our season set in Hong Kong and launching instead, Operation Health.

Operation Health is all about fixing several issues and investing in better technology to make sure we keep growing strong in the upcoming years.

Changes to map rotation in Season 3: https://rainbow6.ubisoft.com/siege/en-u ... n-season-3

I noticed after playing for dozens of hours recently that I still hadn't seen some of the maps I remembered playing last year. This is because they temporarily removed some of them from rotation (Yacht and Favela). Ranked mode also has a further reduced number of maps that can be played.

They also say in the blog post I linked above that they do plan to remove some maps from the game permanently, somewhere down the line, because the game is getting too large in terms of storage space.

What the hell? That's the first time I've ever heard of maps getting deleted from a game.

To clarify: It's because they are bringing out new maps constantly, but don't want the game to go above a certain storage size (it's already like 50GB). They will at least be replacing the removed maps with cool new ones.

That's more like it.

Still don't want to lose the old maps of course. But if the news one are better...

Kinda hard to imagine much better ones, though, given how good the original ones were anyway.

I've found these two videos to be a good summary of the graphical options in Siege:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWkcBkB9h5E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c21mIgjaVNs

The first video explains the common graphic options in the game and the second video mostly talks about a major change they made with the temporal filtering feature.

Apparently there's also an HD Texture DLC pack that you can download that will unlock the Ultra setting in the options menu. Takes up a lot of space though (I believe my download was like 23GB). Major thing those videos taught me is that T-AA can degrade graphical quality. When I had it enabled earlier I noticed bad aliasing from certain distances but I wasn't sure why. I believe that was the reason. I'm currently running FXAA with the Ultra Texture pack (with all the additional bells and whistles listed in the first video) and I still get decent frame rates online so I'll just keep running at Ultra. It seems like MSAA is no longer an option for anti-aliasing like it was when that first video was recorded.

Rainbow Six Team's response to your concerns + our next steps for addressing them
https://www.reddit.com/r/Rainbow6/comme ... cerns_our/

Its_Epi wrote:Our passionate and dedicated fans are the reason why Rainbow Six Siege is a success, especially the ones who have been with us from Day 1. Following yesterday’s announcement, we have seen the frustration from our current players rise to the top of the discussion. Below you will find our next steps for addressing these concerns.

For our current players, any of you that play an online match between now and March 6th will receive the upcoming Ash Sidewinder Elite skin for free. The Ash Sidewinder Elite will be automatically granted to your inventory at the launch of Year 3 Season 1.

For our newcomers and those of you concerned about introducing your friends to the game, we will be keeping the Standard Edition in the store at the current price.

For those of you who have raised concerns over the Starter Edition when it comes to acquiring Operators, we will be sharing more information about our next steps during the Six Invitational. We recognize that this has been a point of frustration for new players, as well as existing players bringing their friends into the game, and have been working on how to make this process more fluid.

The Rainbow Six Siege team has always incorporated player feedback into the game and the direction of the design. Your voice is incredibly important to us and we are monitoring your feedback closely on all aspects of this announcement. Any future updates will be posted here.

They are making the original 20 operators and all weapon attachments free, except to Starter Edition players who will now start with six ops unlocked instead of three.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments ... ge_active/

The devs also announced recently that no sequel is planned and that they intend to continue developing Siege for the next ten years, and to bring it to 100 operators (currently we have 38 with the two new ones).
