[WII] Monster Hunter 3 (Tri)

Japan 01-08-09, US/EU TBA

Will be released on August 1st, 2009 in Japan. I really enjoyed the demo that came with G, and I have completed the two available quests multiple times. Graphics and animation are the best so far I have ever seen from the white Nintendo console. And there are new features as well: sea monsters where you must hunt them in the sea and of course new monsters and new weapons and armor sets. The game can be played with a Nunchuk and remote but it seems that using a CC or a GC pad is a better option for experienced players and executing advanced battle moves and mechanics.

The game will be available in 3 packages, the standard package (game only), one with a Classic Controller Pro (with a Monster Hunter theme on it, possibly) and the collectors edition package (e-capcom limted edition). The last one will include bonus DVDs, OST and one random monster head figurine (3 figurines in total).

Below a Classic Controller Pro image, the one in the MH3 package might be different from this one. More news and images when the package is officially announced.

Wow, they are certainly pushing this game big-time. I guess there must be something in this series -- I've been hearing so much about it for ages. I should give it a try. Thanks for the updates.

Yes, the Monster Hunter games have really captivated me the last months. They have a deep and skill-based combat system unlike the already old point and click MMOG trash systems that hypnotize gamers globally (target enemy, click attack button, watch animation, collect money and item drops, repeat). To kill something in Monster Hunter world, you must use your head not just one or two buttons. You have to dodge enemy attack in real time, think carefully and hit enemy in the right time and in the right place.

The game isn't popular in west because of two simple reasons:

1. Western MMOG gamers in majority don't like a deep action combat system, they prefer watching animations (while they are smoking, you cannot smoke and play a monster hunter title -- try it). Don't forget that half the number of MMO players aren't gamers as well, they are middle-aged lazy ex-gamers.

2. Lack of marketing campaigns and advertisement of the series in West.

Note that Monster Hunter games aren't true MMOGs, they are online multiplayer hack and slash titles, like Phantasy Star Online. But with the latest Wii's Monster Hunter titles and PC exclusives of the Japanese and Korean Monster Hunter Frontier (online only) the series are adapting more MMOG elements. The first Monster Hunter game on the PS2 and its sequels, G and Dos were online as well with offline play. PSP's games have an ad-hoc multiplayer system only, and you can only play online with other players via a PS3 and a Sony official Japanese program called Ad-hoc Party, or via a PC software (XLINK-KAI, unofficial no-Capcom program and servers) and a third-party network adapter. Sure Monster Hunters are playable solo, but you miss more than half the content of the games if you follow that road. I truly encourage you to play them online. Or start playing them offline, familiarize yourlself with game mechanics and move to online play for more advanced stuff.

Three Japanese TV commercials below that show a few of the new monsters the Lagiacrus (sea dragon), Quru Pekko (bird monster) and buruborosu (stone monster):

Also, it will be available a Wii keyboard as it is necessary for the in-game chat. Capcom haven't announced Wiispeak capabilities for MH3 yet, and I doubt that will ever happen.

No official release date has been set yet for the EU/NA market. There are some rumors for a NA release date for March 2009. Nothing about a EU release officially or unofficially.

Capcom should hurry this time, or people will just import it and wait for the translation patch (that has already begun since Monster Hunter 3 demo). However, many players will wait for the English version in order to enjoy the rich online content of the game, ignoring the Japanese servers.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a game for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The 3DS version was released on December 10, 2011 in Japan as Monster Hunter Tri G (モンスターハンター3(トライ)G Monsutā Hantā Torai G?, "Monster Hunter 3 (tri-) G") and features local wireless play. In Japan, Famitsu announced that Monster Hunter Tri G was confirmed as an expanded Monster Hunter Tri. It is the first game to support Circle Pad Pro add-on. The game was also released in two bundles, one containing the special edition 3DS and the other one containing the add-on. It was also released on Wii U, which features revised HD graphics, full online, local multiplayer, and the ability to import the game progress to the player's Nintendo 3DS. The Wii U port is known in Japan as Monster Hunter 3G HD Ver., and was released on December 8, 2012 when the Wii U launched in Japan, whilst the Nintendo 3DS version was re-released as a Nintendo eShop downloadable two days prior, featuring a slightly lower price than the retail re-release. It was announced that Tri G would be released in North America and Europe as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and is to be released on March 2013 together for both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS was also announced, which originally scheduled to be released in Japan in the same month as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate in North America and Europe, but later pushed back to Summer 2013. It was later announced that the North American and European releases will be on March 19 and 22 respectively. A new demo of the game has been scheduled for 21st February 2013.

Capcom and Nintendo have today confirmed that following the 22 March release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U, a software update will be released in April as a response to Capcom community feedback.

The software update will add online cross-region functionality, allowing European and North American gamers to play together online in up to four-player battles. Monster Hunters will also be able to play the game using just the Wii U GamePad without the need for a TV screen as the software update makes the title compatible with off-TV play.

Capcom will be continuing to support Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for several months after release with additional free of charge downloadable quests. The first quest will be available at launch.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate releases across Europe on 22 March for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, both at retail as well as on Nintendo eShop.
