Nuclear Dawn is a post-apocalyptic video game that blends the first-person shooter (FPS) and real-time strategy (RTS) genres. It was originally announced in February 2006 as an amateur mod for the Source engine,[4] but in April 2009 was revealed to have become a commercial project, still using Source, aimed at Windows PCs, Mac OS X and the Xbox 360.

The hype surrounding this game is ridiculous -- absurd even. The developer claims that it "Combines FPS with RTS without diluting either side", and though this could possibly be true of the FPS side, the claim for the RTS is ridiculous seeing as their goddamn game IS NOT EVEN AN RTS AT ALL -- IT IS A TACTICAL GAME NOT A STRATEGY ONE YOU MORANS. Just because you can place a couple of fucking turrets doesn't mean THAT YOU ARE DIRECTING A MOTHERFUCKING WAR FOR FUCK'S SAKE -- which is what "strategy game" means.

Bleh, whatever. And just look at this stupid shit right here:

One player on each team is a 'commander', who directs his or her team from an overhead view. The remainder are soldiers who have standard FPS player capabilities. Drivable vehicles were originally planned, but decided to leave vehicles out of the initial release of Nuclear Dawn.

Regardless of all the above, however, this is the most interesting concept to happen to multiplayer FPS in ages. Just take a look right here (about half-way through):

Too bad the setting and character design are humdrum, and the Source engine is getting seriously dated. Still, if I were looking to play a new online FPS this is what I'd be looking forward to. Funny thing is that I could only play this as commander (because I can't take orders from anybody, much less some stranger on the internet) which, if I understand the mechanics of the game correctly by that trailer and the Wikipedia article, it would be nothing like playing an FPS.

What they should have done is make an epic co-op campaign (with 5 to 10 players or so) in a proper setting, and then they'd have had the game of the year on their hands. But throwaway settings and boring deathmatching are infinitely easier to produce, so there you have Nuclear Dawn. I mean they couldn't even manage to put some vehicles in there for christsake, in two-thousand-fucking-eleven!

The 360 version never materialized, so I removed its tag from the thread title.
