Nintendo Direct@E3 2013: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13D1I5s236o

I've never watched one of these before. It's hilarious. Iwata's entire manner, etc. This middle-aged/old man in a business suit talking so earnestly about new fairies being added in a Pokemon game or whatever. His manner is so cute it makes me want to buy everything he's selling just to make sure his company continues to do well and he doesn't become sad. But honestly the U has nothing beyond Platinum's games, and even those are a disgrace, a crime against the artform. Platinum should be working on next-gen titles; you can't fucking shackle the best action game maker in the world to 2005 technology for christsake when all the other studios are working on new engines. The sooner they are done with Nintendo and say their goodbyes the better.

http://culture.vg/features/segabastard/ ... the-wii-u/

It's a great article; I've nothing to say on this score. So I am just going to point out its mistakes.

1. "Learn from history", his first heading says, and his message is that journalists should pay more attention to their mistakes, and learn from them. But does HE pay attention to the history OF PHILOSOPHY, which teaches us that JOURNALISTS ARE INCAPABLE OF LEARNING? He says he likes Insomnia, and he has given me permission to republish whatever articles from his site that I want, but he has never bothered to visit the site (I know, because I have statistics) since the redesign, even though he's had a free account since day 1. He keeps whining in article after article after article, for years and years and decades, about how journalists and gaming sites suck, and yet he purposefully ignores the best videogame site there is, presumably because it has a thing or two to teach him, while he prefers to get his kicks from teaching others.

2.

Nick wrote:The Wii was an awful system.

I never owned one. I've also never owned a Razor scooter. I was an adult when both products were released, so I had no interest in either. I can't say I've lived my life with complete respect for Einstein's definition of insanity, and I've certainly had enough spins on the Nintendo carousel to learn that its machines are for children. Equipped with this knowledge, the Wii was easy to avoid.

Awesome. What a cool dude. He managed to "avoid" the Wii, and presumably also the one or two dozen great games released for it. I haven't played many games on the machine, but I HAVE played Kororinpa, and that game is reason enough to buy the system.

The hardcore gamer needs ONE great game. That's all he needs to buy a system. And even a merely decent game will do, most of the time. If you require anything more in order to buy a system you are a casual.

3.

Nick wrote:I doubt I'll ever forget that IGN explained to us that the Wii was going to revolutionize first-person shooters; I cannot find a single multi-platform FPS that didn't receive its lowest score on the Wii.

Not as big a howler as the previous ones, but worth pointing out nevertheless. Multi-platform scores mean diddly squat for this issue: you have to look at EXCLUSIVES, because these are the ones that will tend to make full use of the control scheme. But you didn't buy the goddamn system, so how could you have an opinion on the subject? Maybe some of the Metroid games did neat things with the controller? Maybe those Red Steel games? Maybe techniques invented for those will be adopted and refined for the controllers currently in development for the Oculus Rift? You wouldn't know, because your hatred of a faceless multinational and your miserly, penny-pinching attitude towards videogame hardware will forever prevent you from finding out. You are good with googling and tables and data -- with the JOURNALISTIC, that is to say, aspect of "research" -- but you SUCK with REAL research, which demands genuinely HARDCORE, PASSIONATE people who don't give a shit about spending 100 or 200 extra bucks in order to be able to sample the FULL range of games available on the market.

4.

Nick wrote:Ultimately, the same was true for the Wii as it has been for all Nintendo machines. Nintendo machines exist to sell Nintendo games to children.

Bullshit. If you were not such a raging Sega fanboy you would not be able to look at the gigantic Famicom and Super Famicom libraries and say that they were made for children. Again, dumb statement that only a journalist would say -- precisely the kind of person that he is excoriating in his article.

5.

Nick wrote:What is the problem with the Wii U? People seem to have learned their lessons with the Wii.

Fair enough. That certainly explains how badly the Wii U has been selling. But what the fuck does any of that matter if the Wii U has Bayonetta 2?

None of it matters at all -- IF, that is to say, you are more interested in PLAYING great games than in WHINING why bad reviewers and commentators do not suddenly and miraculously become better at reviewing and commentating than the GENIUS reviewers and commentators that you can't even be bothered to read...

6.

Nick wrote:The Wii accumulated the absolute worst library of any major videogame console in history. It demonstrably, empirically has the most wretched, unplayable, unwanted, unsold roster of bargain bin fodder ever to be compiled for a major home game system. This was the exact opposite of every prediction made (besides here at SB).

And besides Insomnia, Postback, and gamengai, among perhaps other sites you also don't bother reading because they are actually good and wouldn't give you any opportunities for whining about their content.

...

Apart from all that, great article dude. (Not that you'll ever read this.)

And what does this even mean?

Nick wrote:The Wii was an awful system.

Nick can't even tell the difference between a system and its library. The history of the medium is full of awesome pieces of hardware that never achieved decent libraries, for whatever reasons. That doesn't mean they are "bad systems". The DS is a bad system, the Wii is merely a weak -- for its time -- but still WELL-DESIGNED system. It's compact, light, reliable, decent-looking, cheap, and apparently twice as powerful as its predecessor. What's so "awful" about that then?

The thing is, you all can disagree all you want. You can throw insults at the article writer in an attempt to discredit him.

But the cold hard fact is that WiiU will be last place this gen, by a lot. The numbers prove that most gamers don't agree with the Nintendo quality argument. If they agreed then they would buy WiiU.

The numbers prove the cheerleaders are wrong. Nintendo is doing poorly this gen, and there is real threat they might leave the game industry to pursue QOL. Honestly I blame the cheerleaders for creating this false sense of success for Nintendo when everyone should have been criticizing them for making terrible hardware nobody wants.

Ban me for truth and valid opinion.

And he was banned.

Nintendo Partners With DeNA to Develop Mobile Games, New 'NX' Console Teased
http://www.allgamesbeta.com/2015/03/nin ... velop.html

Nintendo and DeNA Form Business and Capital Alliance

Nintendo and DeNA today entered into a business and capital alliance to develop and operate new game apps for smart devices and build a new multi-device membership service for consumers worldwide.

Leveraging the strength of Nintendo's intellectual property (IP) and game development skills in combination with DeNA's world-class expertise in mobile games, both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo's IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices. The alliance is intended to complement Nintendo's dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo's reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide. Under the alliance, DeNA will also be able to strengthen its gaming business at a global scale by leveraging Nintendo's IP. To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.

In order to create completely new game experiences for smart devices, all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance. As these consumers enjoy the unique kind of gameplay found only with Nintendo, they will have the opportunity to explore even more premium experiences on Nintendo's dedicated video game platforms. Information on upcoming games and availability will be forthcoming.

Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.

As part of the long-term relationship and commitment by each company, Nintendo and DeNA have also agreed to form a capital alliance. Under the capital alliance, Nintendo will acquire 15,081,000 of DeNA's treasury shares, which corresponds to 10.00 percent of its total outstanding stock, for a total of approximately 22 billion yen. DeNA will simultaneously acquire 1,759,400 of Nintendo's treasury shares, which corresponds to 1.24 percent of its outstanding stock, for a total of approximately 22 billion yen. The payment is due April 2, 2015.

Nintendo Co., Ltd. DeNA Co., Ltd. Business and Capital Alliance Announcement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNi6ZbMKh_w

slide-game-system-nx.jpg

Nintendo's new platform codename: "Project NX"

Iwata: Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned.

Iwata: While this is not something directly relating to the collaboration that we have announced today, here is one thing I would like to mention to avoid any misunderstandings.

Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices but it is not because we have lost passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems. On the contrary, now that we have decided how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than ever before. Nintendo has made this decision because we have concluded that the approach of making use of smart devices is a rational way for us to encourage even more people around the world to recognize the great value of the wonderful game software available on our dedicated game systems.

Iwata: As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX.” It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.
