I was never a fan of the Polaris, aesthetically, but it has grown on me. I think it looks especially badass in the above pic. It looks mean, no?

The game's first capital warship will be going live in November, and we have already bought 3 of them. I am excited to see how many we can fly at the same time, and what sort of ships we'll store in them. Will also be cool to fly it in conjunction with a Hammerhead. It would be a terrific all-purpose fleet, no? You can have 2-3 fighters in the Polaris, plus an Ursa Medivac in the Hammerhead. Maybe some more ground vehicles in the Polaris? You can do basically every mission currently in the game with this fleet. Probably Polaris + Hammerhead = Idris, so it'll give us a taste of how the Idris will feel, now that it has seemingly being pushed back to 2026 due to Squadron 42.

In the Cult Spec I have it as the HQ ship of the Captain. It makes sense because the Captain is meant to command a platoon, and the Polaris crew at 6-12 plus some troops is around that size.

The ad is so convincing that I would feel bad if I didn't chip in to protect mankind.

I wonder if they'll make a new ad for the launch.

Brepp wrote:Excited for the Polaris to provide new context for the comparatively low-lift logistics of "large" ships like the Herc, Starlancer, and Perseus.

Each ship released kind of forms up the pantheon of ships a little bit more with its added comparisons. For example, the Valkyrie once felt like a fairly large ship, but it has the same footprint as a Spirit - a ship that's currently considered medium to small in the grand scale of things.

Similar to the common "can't wait to see all the Polaris owners complaining about how hard it is to solo," I've started to wonder if the Polaris coming out will provide new context for how comparatively easy it will be to operate ships one size down from it.

I'm thinking with the context the Polaris provides as an entry-level capital ship, ships like the Perseus, HH, 600i, Herc, Galaxy, and Starlancer will be seen in a new light as what a "large ship" offers comparatively in terms of the greatest resource efficiency, better load up/get to the fun stuff time, and greatest impact while having a much smaller crew and logistic demand than the next size up (Polaris or larger). Once the Perseus comes out, it will likely feel like a far easier "pick up and go" version of the Polaris experience. Even the Starlancer has been compared in conversations here to the Connie and Corsair, but it's Hercules sized. It's a large ship. And while this tier of ship will not be able to be "solo'd" forever, even their crew demand (let's say 3-7 depending on which) will feel small compared to sub-capital demands.

The 890 is of course Polaris sized, but since it's an inherently RP based ship it isn't often assessed on if it's fully crewed or not, or by how effective it is at combat. The Polaris however will be judged on this any time you encounter it, much like a player HH is immediately judged by how many turrets are manned.

This isn't a knock on the Polaris - it's more a "it's supposed to be hard to logistically operate." My guess is the Polaris (and the community's perception of capital sized ships) will be seen as often sitting in hangars mid-stock, prepping for org nights when it'll be at its most effective. Even then, I'm excited to learn how rare a sighting a fully crewed Polaris will be.

MAX_Daemon wrote:I expect the Starlancer to be solable for the most part. It is obvious you will miss out on key functionality like turret coverage and maybe combat mechanics like engineering. But the day to day function of that ship should be doable by one person. The Polaris likewise will probably have basic flight and getting around covered by one person but will totally be gimped in combat if flown solo.

roflwafflelawl wrote:IIRC it is at least supposed to be fairly fast, at least in terms of sub-cap to capital ships so hopefully anything that is a giant threat can be outrun.

Though a lot of that will also come down to how well the anti-missile turret systems work, if they're even functional on release.

Besides that as long as the repair/rearm function of the hangar come out with it it should hopefully serve as a decent FOB for a few other starter ships.

FOB means forward operating base.

MasonStonewall wrote:I look forward to the Polaris. The 890J you say is role play focused, but luxury passenger transport will be a thing "someday" when we get passenger transport AI working, with the 600i touring, the Starliner, the E1 Spirit, a possible Zeus passenger variant, and I'm guessing some smaller starter "taxi" passenger transport, too. Anyway, I digress from your topic at hand.

I agree that there will be a delineated line based on players available to play together AND the type of ship that's best to use for a particular mission or play style for the day. And as new mechanics come online in the game, it will make the choice more important due to the factors involved and the crew you are traveling with that day. Size matters, and other times it doesn't. The Hercules C2, for example, has the same maximum crew allotted as the smaller C1 Spirit. Why? It is classed as a courier because its design assumes that personnel will be at both ends to assist in moving the cargo or vehicles carried within it. It's used for purposes beyond that, but as it's derived from the military Hercules M2, it doesn't carry extra personnel for cargo handling or have tractor beams since the military would have people to handle that job.

Polaris Hangar Ideas
https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/co ... ngar_ideas

Image

  • 20-23 Furys - Fury pocket carrier (easy fit)

  • 2 Mk II Hornets (easy fit)

  • 4-6 Arrows (4 easy, 5 doable, 6 tricky)

  • 1 Apollo (easy fit)

  • 1 Raft (might be a tad too tall, might have to remove top turrets)

  • 1 F8C (easy)

  • 1 Vanguard (might be too tall... Landing without landing gear could be possible)

  • 1 Ares Ion / Inferno (easy)

  • 1 Cutlass (maybe a little tall, land without gear)

  • 1 Freelancer (easy)

  • 3-4 Hull As Extended (3 easy, 4 tricky)

  • 1 Vulture + 1-3 Hull As (1 Hull A doable / 2 Hull As tricky / 3 Hull As hard)

From the above list, my ideal would be the 2 Hornets. We have a bunch of F7As, and people should be able to buy F7Cs in-game soon. Problem is, he says they should be an easy fit, but it doesn't look easy to me from his pic. At any rate, this would be my ideal.

Failing that... a Cutlass BLACK, if it would fit, would be awesome because it would mean that if you wanted to do a ground mission you wouldn't have to land the Polaris, which because it's huge would have trouble landing on slopes etc. You just fly your Cutlass with a Cyclone in the back and use the Polaris as your mothership in orbit. A Hammerhead has the same issue of being tough to land on anything but very flat land. So if you're flying Polaris + Hammerhead, a Cutlass in the Polaris would give you tremendous operational flexibility. Your Cutlass could be doing ground missions while your Polaris + Hammerhead do space missions, and between missions they all meet and swap crews for variety.

If I could fly TWO Polarises together, then I wouldn't mind loading them up with one Scorpius in each, but honestly, even in that case I would much rather take 4 Hornets...

Some notes from the thread:

JaK_Winter wrote:These are not the exact dimensions. Also, the ship has been changed slightly from the original concept, it is slightly bigger now, I think. The only ship CIG has shown releasing from the Polaris is the RSI Scorpius. So if you want to base and other ships, use the Scorpius as an example. Ships may fit length and width, but height will be a sorta wait and see. And while something might fit with the doors open, as soon as you QT, all outside doors usually are forced closed so I don't recommend testing if a ship fits that way.

And a brand-new image of the beast, released only days ago, that shows much more detail than the earlier image I posted above:

What I haven't been able to figure out yet is what ground vehicles, if any, the Polaris itself can carry.

Great observation. The Polaris’s torpedoes are already meant to take down capital ships (I think 4 for an Idris currently), but an onboard Ares would take it to another level. It’s already an anti-capital ship, but with an Ares it would be supreme capital killer.

But my favorite part was stealing a Polaris while it had people in it and systematically clearing the ship (they had no idea I snuck on at Everus and flew the ship away while they were exploring it). Space piracy is great fun.

Incredible. Without a doubt the greatest commercial yet. Funny that it's better than pretty much all other games' TRAILERS. And here, it's just one out of hundreds of videos produced every year. This is metaverse gaming.

Captain's quarters aren't finished, so CIG has them locked.

@michaelgiertz-rath7994 wrote:Just in case you missed it: the ship's crew is using uniforms following Star Trek's color scheme - yellow = engineering / security, red = command crew / blue = science.

Also the internal damage part looks like what one expects in Star Trek (especially the engineering room scene).

CIG really loves to give some homages to well known SciFi franchises. I guess that's one of the reasons why a lot of us feel like "coming home".

Wouldn’t a Mantis also do the job? Then maybe you could have a Mantis and a Firebird?

In any case the Emperor’s Chief or Staff instructs Polaris owners to acquire all these ships and practice Polaris interdiction on unsuspecting newbs, then report back in this thread with the results. It’s time we figured out interdiction anyway.
