Hamachi

Hamachi simulates a LAN, allowing remote users to play games in LAN mode over the internet. When people hope for LAN support for a new game it is maybe 5% of the time because they don't have any internet or whatever, and 95% of the time that they are pirates that want to play it using Hamachi. The program is nowadays named "LogMeIn Hamachi", but it works the same as it always has.

If you get the Unmanaged version you don't need to bother with making a LogMeIn account, so that's the one I recommend getting. Install it, pick a username, and then either create a network or connect to an existing one. Then start up whichever game you want to play and look for LAN servers, and you'll be able to see servers hosted by anyone on the same Hamachi network as yourself.

What's new in "LogMeIn Hamachi" is that the program looks sleeker, and that the amount of users in the free version is limited to five per network. Creating and joining networks is easy however, so you can just switch from session to session. For groups of six or more we might be able to find an older version of the program, where there were no restrictions of users per network.

You can be on multiple networks at the same time, so it might work with any number of people as long as everyone shares a network with the host. Or you can rent the ability to make larger networks on their website:
