Old link, but I just came across it:

http://opa-ages.com/forums/topic/273-aw ... msearch__1

A Russian dude linking to my gameplay article:

http://forum.gameland.ru/m_1932886/mpag ... tm#1955633

So I guess they must have an equivalent word in Russian. It also seems that all Romance languages have one. Greek and Japanese do not, as far as I know. I wonder about the rest of the world.

And some of the fallout from the hobag article:

http://girl-wonder.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4953

Thomas wrote:Psychology is the "queen of sciences" now? lol

Know then thyself, presume not God to scan,
The proper study of mankind is Man.

Thomas wrote:It's not even a real science.

And you of course know all about real sciences. I bet you also know all about electrons, quarks, equality, justice, and the like.

Science:
the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment

If psychology is not a science then nothing is a science. But I guess common people are pleased to think that if there's no numbers in it it can't possibly be a science. What is it then, eh? A hobby?

spargelkol wrote:I like (in the sense of hate) how he hates all these women who write about video games, except the ones he likes.

Isn't this natural? How could it ever be otherwise? I like what I like and I dislike what I dislike!

Noah Brand wrote:One of the difficulties with being male is testosterone.

Testosterone is now a "male difficulty" lol! They probably also think that a lion's claws are a "difficulty" to the lions! Maybe TO OTHER ANIMALS they are a difficulty, but not to the lions themselves! Of course if the lions were in process of ingratiating themselves to the other animals, of, say, trying to fit in and make friends with a bunch of sheep, then yeah, in that case I guess their claws would be a "difficulty"! At the very sight of them all the sheep would run for cover! And so one's best, most precious attributes finally become a "difficulty"...

icycalm wrote:Another thing I've already talked about here (in the "Icy's Genius" thread). Style is not a "decision". Only someone who has never created anything could think that it is. Style, as Schopenhauer somewhere explains, is a direct reflection of the author's character. And character is NEVER a decision. It is "an order of fate" as Baudrillard would put it. All I did was express myself as genuinely, as honestly, as directly as I could.

"And that, judge" he added, "is why I should not be punished for flinging poo at people who walk by my apartment building."

Exactly, because no one is ultimately responsible for what they do. So if you punish people because you regard them as responsible, YOU are the one who is committing the "injustice". Unfortunately, no one is capable of understanding this.

Not to mention I already have far more money than I need, and thus hardly any reason to desire a "job", let alone Leigh's. I am in a sub-tropical paradise island swimming, playing basketball and surfing every day. Why the fuck would I want to hole myself up in some nightmarish urban prison-apartment and be forced to scribble endless worthless comments about random games I couldn't care less about? But hey, some random dude on the internet who knows nothing about me "suspects" that my "misogyny" is just a mask for "professional jealousy". All the while I could be a billionaire for all he knows for fuck's sakes!

Garamoth wrote:Ever since I heard about it here, I thought the http://insomnia.ac/ was just being annoying. But now I opened my eyes and I have seen: it's a humor site, where anything you say except maybe groveling can get you scolded or banned. Even old habituals get the whip sometimes. All this time, I should have placed the site next to the Onion.com...

Plus, there's always a double standard or mind game going on, especially on the boards (which is half the fun of the site):

- Bringing up a word that is too complicated for the moderator like "gender" or anything art-related.
Man oh man, BANNED! (Sorry, no artfaggotry, only philofaggotry is allowed).

- Not explaining why you're against something thoroughly enough.
Oh boy, BANNED! (I mean, LOL).

- Making a pointless rant.
Hmmm... BANNED! (But my rants on the boards are okay, that's why I turn them into articles. NICHE NICHE NICHE!)

- Saying that something exists.
Holy shit, BANNED! (you're stupid, nothing exists).

- Saying you don't care about such and such philosopher or that he isn't relevant.
Wha... oh you... BANNED! (Seriously, dude, did you really think you could understand Oneechanbara without reading Schopenhauer and my 20-book prerequisite reading list? Madness.)

So the man has essentially created both a comic and tragic hero in himself: someone who is eternally foaming at the mouth while playing Twinkle Star Sprites because no one understands the obvious Nietzsche references while on his romantic quest to save the select few who can see the genius of his argument and pull them away from the inescapable dreck that is society, thereby creating a small-scale utopia where people discuss Baudrillard and clear Ikaruga with one credit.

Essentially, his site is a living and breathing work of Art, which is why he must get offended when the word is used in vain. It's an interactive display of the eternal clash between one narrow-minded expert of self-proclaimed genius and an endless series of clueless berks who think there's actually a chance they could win the mind game.

So yeah, pretty hilarious stuff.

I lolled.

I mean yeah:

But my rants on the boards are okay, that's why I turn them into articles.

So what he basically wants is for me to disregard my own opinions, or to downplay them, and give "equal rights" -- ON MY WEBSITE -- to the opinions of others WHICH I DETEST WITH ALL MY MIGHT, AND TO REFUTE WHICH I SET UP THE WEBSITE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

So tell me please, how could I ever possibly extend the designation "human" to a person such as him? Monkeys have greater reasoning power! Monkeys!

Comments from that last article:

Anonymous wrote:“In the end, why don’t we give real girl gamers, journalists and developers the benefit of the doubt and stop supporting those who are out simply to get their piece of the pie. Gaming is one of those fantastic mediums where gender is irrelevant”

“But hey, sex sells doesn’t it? Can’t beat natural instinct.”

LOL, how fucking ironic. And it isn’t a medium retard. That is a common misconception. They are simulation.

Matthew Zimmerman wrote:“I read an article recently that; besides being little more then [sic] a directly targeted, terribly written, bigoted, hate spewing [sic] manifesto; made a loose reference to the rise of the ‘fake woman gamer’.”

PROTIP: When accusing someone of writing terribly, it helps when you have no grammatical errors in the same sentence in which you are accusing them, or in the entire article, for that matter. The door swings both ways.

“Generalization is a nasty thing [...]”

Yes, that’s right! You can’t exactly point out WHY it was terribly written, as it would bring attention to your own scribbles, which, I have to say, aren’t exactly above par either (actually, they’re above game mag par, but not, say, Danielle Steele par). In fact, HIS article was much better written than yours, even with all the misogyny and bigotry, which really only made it more entertaining for me.

Here is where I’ll point out some of the stupid crap in your article, so as not to be tarred by the same crap-covered brush as you, as I like the color red better. I hope you’ll be a little more introspective and at least provide examples in the future when you accuse another of “terrible writing.” Anonymous — bless him — already took care of the first two lapses in intellect.

“Gamers are growing up, and as a result, so is gaming.”

Because when videogames came out in ‘63, everyone who played them were children, right? Wrong. If we go by a twenty-year span, there are two generations of gamers. If we go by every console generation, we have many more. Anyway, what the hell are you talking about? How can gaming ‘grow up’? What is a gamer? Someone who plays games? Then, everyone is a gamer.

“Sitting on the top of a mountain after what was almost a ferocious rise [...]”

I don’t think any of this occurred, and it doesn’t make sense. Did we prevail over something? I really hate this metaphor. It’s… terrible!

“[...] our once marginalized hobby has hit the mainstream.”

Who exactly makes up this “mainstream”? And how is videogaming vindicated or whatever if it gets this stream’s notice? I bet you got a stiffy when Adam Sandler played “Shadows of the Colossus” [sic] in “Reign Over Me”. Also, gaming is marginalized for a good reason: just read everything you’ve ever written about it.

“Have we allowed the rest of societies’ ills to flood in and kill the simple pleasure of playing a game, mirroring the same corruption of music and film?”

It’s not corruption. It’s just people being people. They’re the root of all evil — they even made up the word. Gasp.

“Now, while I don’t agree with the large majority of the author’s comments, especially since I know quite a few very talented female journalists who do it for the same reasons I do [...]”

Which are? Why don’t you agree?

Besides, you wouldn’t be saying this if you had read the whole article and completely understood everything he said, and his position. All you probably saw was some crap about female “game journalists” being dumb sluts and started having some kind of self-righteous seizure and thought him sexist.

I really like it when I link something here and a few days later I see comments like this. It saves me the time to respond, which I can use instead to write more articles. A nice deal all around, if I may say so myself.

http://zip.4chan.org/v/res/33765268.html

I saved a transcript of the long thread in my PM box here so I can give that to you if you'd like if the link expires. Like pretty much all the criticisms there's no meat to them. Here's some random quotes.

The man has one thing right. Challenge is what makes a game not shit.

What a raging faggot.

he is pretty right, read the last paragraph, he is judging cave story solely as a game, comparing it to classics like the castelvanias or metroids, not as a game made by 1 person on his free time.
the point is, Cave story wouldnt be as popular if it was made by an official company and sold on stores, he is judging it as that.

God, this review is terrible. He spend more time describing the "scene" than the game itself, point that everybody but him love the game, and it's full of unnecessary shit. He doesn't have a point, just bashs the game for no reason.
And this game isn't easy, fuck.

Meh. The guy has a really masturbatory writing style. "Look at my wacky metaphors and cutting, brash wit!" Typical SomethingAwful.com fare.

He talks about the game very little through all of it, too, mostly making a show of how he's TTTLY GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN by disliking Cave Story.

I don't feel like he did a good job of exposing any flaws in the gameplay or presentation of the game, also. It mostly boiled down to

>It's not hard enough for my sensibilities (as a TRUE gamer)
>I find this game aesthetically and musically unimpressive by standards of judgment I do not explain

Is this some kind of troll? Or is he just an asshole?

A thread on elitists, and what do you know, I am of course mentioned on the very first post:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.130216

Because as all the dregs of humanity know, it is BAD to be an elitist, to consider yourself part of an elite.

elite |əˈlēt; āˈlēt|
noun
1 a group of people considered to be the best in a particular society or category, esp. because of their power, talent, or wealth

What you want to be instead is part of the SCUM of humanity -- that is the goal for every non-self-respecting abortion of a human being.

One of them got it right at least:

I can't see how a sane person could not be an elitist.

But all of them ignored it except this one dude whose only response was:

What?

It's funny how often this site is compared to Fox News. Jimmy, dude, you're 15, and you don't watch the news on any channel, much less Fox. Your sole window to the world of international affairs is Comedy Central. Let it go.

There's also something so hilariously myopic about referring to Fox News as an insult to something you're comparing it to. Fox News is a ratings giant. It would be like a member of a vegan forum comparing Insomnia to Kobe steak, or foie gras. Yes, in your tiny little world that was an insult, but to everyone else you sound like a dumbass who's just parroting what his friends are saying.

JimmyBassatti wrote:And then, I read a post by a mod which belittled someone, and insulted a country, that's what sent me over the edge.
