He has an air dash and a shield?

It looks cool, and the use of 3D at the start, with the helicopter swooping in, is quite stunning. I just need to find the sweetspot screen size for this type of game. Somewhere around 20" to 29" I think. Certainly no more than that.

16 : 9 makes 2-D games look so... empty... Anyway, how long to find out it's going to be ruined by analog control-only crap.

Glad to see they didn't call it 'Contra', nevertheless.

Also, this:

El hecho de incorporar cargas ('dashes') parece dejarnos claro que NO se juega con control analógico. Chachi.

Y aquí seguimos esperando capturas a su resolución nativa de los medios occidentales.

A ver si se anuncia en Japón.

Looks nuts, I think, at least at this resolution... Very excited. Quite a bit more than for Moon Diver, for sure.

Animated Intro Movie: http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/31592/bigger

2P Demonstration: http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/31593

The second video looks so good I can't tell exactly what's 3D and what's 2D.

It's a shame they didn't take a risk and release this in the arcades first. We are talking about ArcSys after all, it's not a big stretch considering how arcade-focused the company is.

I'd be interested in finding out how much crossover there is between the team that's making this and the Blazblue team. The design philosophy behind the 2D/3D blend in these two games is extremely similar.

It'd be awesome if the game does well and they move on to breathe new life into other old genres as well.

Nice, looks much better than what I first expected. That boss fight looks like great fun, too, with so much going on at the same time.

Parece que tiene exclusividad temporal con el XBLA americano. Supongo que una vez caduque, lo veremos en Japón en ambos sistemas.

Got the game. It's amazing, maybe the best Contra game except for one colossal blunder: Arcade mode is littered with extra lives like fucking Donkey Kong Country. There's a bunch of new actions to make the manuevering more complex. Dashing, double jumps, bullet reflecting, air dashing, hopping over small objects, and even a move were you can dodge past an enemy and shoot him in the back without losing speed. The stage structure is significantly improved from Shattered Soldier and Hard Corps in that it's more like Metal Slug (or the first Contra) with lots of targets and as such demands a good amount of improvisation. It's also long and fucking tough. So far I have a hard time clearing stage 2 without dying.

Here's a list and description of all the special moves:

Dash + vault is done by dashing towards a box or something hitting B and you'll leap over it.
Dash + Dodge is done by dashing towards a bullet and hitting B
Dash + Ambush attack is when you dodge an enemy then you fire at them from behind.
The super tackle is performed by dashing and pressing B (again), mostly it's good for sandbags and other breakable objects enemies like to take cover behind. It destroys the cover and the shrapnel makes short work of everyone.
Bullet reflect is as simple as standing still and pressing B. This is handy for all regular green bullets and works great on the snipers. Key word here is STANDING however. In the situations where you would most likely need it (in the air, on the ceiling, against the wall) you can't use it.

Unfortunately since dashing into something dangerous takes two blocks of health instead of one I haven't found much use for them.
ASW needs to release some videos of high-level play at work.

Well, the game sounds awesome. Too bad I don't have internet access at home yet. Should do something about that. Too bad the fucking game is not out on retail!

Also, is this really the first genuinely good original XBLA game? Can't think of any others off the top of my head (though there are a couple of candidates: Rearmed, etc. -- but they still do not measure up to this from your comments).

At any rate, you should consider reviewing it at some point. It's been a while since we've had a review of a good new game.

Sweet. Will definitely get this after I'm done with Contra Spirits (which I think I might have misjugded because of my disinclination towards its overhead stages, and just started playing more habitually) and perhaps Shattered Soldier. Looking forward to reading the review. :)

Here's what the artfags thought of it:

Sniper Honeyviper wrote:I played the demo.

It's almost as if Arc purposefully tried to fulfill everyone's expectations that it would be "guilty gear + contra," there's even alternate colors and double-tap running. What there isn't is anything resembling actual level design, and it suffers from all the same problems as every 2D Arc game (floatiness, floppiness, everything is a cardboard cutout). Taking the lifebar into account, you essentially have nine lives, and health recoveries are plentiful, at least in the first stage. It doesn't help that all the enemies look like Blazblue's Arakune, or that your un-powered weapon is the most pitiful peashooter ever.

The first boss has the exact same attack pattern as Alien Hominid's. That should tell you all you need to know.

I am ever more convinced that no one knows what the fuck to do with Contra/Castlevania/Metroid anymore.

http://forums.selectbutton.net/viewtopi ... 912#895912

He thinks that "Contra/Castlevania/Metroid" are the same thing, lol.

Sniper Honeyviper wrote:trust me, it's not. even contra 4, which at least had some killer sprite art, is more worthy of the name than this confused, ill-advised mess.

if you're really desperate for a downloadable contra on a home console, try rebirth. it might be an uninspired retread but at least it's still got the rock-solid classic konami feel.

http://forums.selectbutton.net/viewtopi ... 980#895980

It's "not even Contra 4", lol.

Deets wrote:Played this some more co-op yesterday.

I like the movement options that the guilty gear controls afford you. You can tap the dash button while crouching to do a bizarre sliding air-dash along the ground, and being able to combine double jumps with air dashes does allow for some interesting boss attack patterns. Ultimately, though? The levels are way too fucking long. Each stage is roughly 12-16 minutes long if you're playing cautiously, and have an insane amount of dead space between the bosses, which are distinctly not brilliant in any way. Stage 2 has 3 bosses, all of which kind of suck, and all separated by at least 6 minutes of okay-ish level design. The last boss of those 3 was one of the worst designed I have ever seen, a mech that appears in various corners of a 3-screen wide arena, forcing you to constantly run from one edge to the other in the hope that he'll actually be there. Sometimes you just hear him spamming attacks on you from offscreen. Then you get to the area he was shooting at you from, and he's vanished, teleported tot he opposite side of the arena. This is to say nothing of his awful attack patterns. Bad, bad, bad.

Stage 3 was better, but I had to pass the controller off to another friend in order to catch the train home. Will report more when we inevitably plow through this thing.

There's more, but these are the more substantial comments. At least timbilly says he likes it. For the animu, no doubt.

Might as well review it to clear up the bullshit. The last new game I wanted to review was Metroid: Other M but there was such a consensus on how bad it was I don't think I could have added much of value.

I should also mention at this point that this is the fastest action shooter ever made. The people complaining about the slow speed must be blind. The issue is that to move fast you have to dodge past bullets and enemies, something which takes a decent amount of skill since there are specific events that are designed as speed bumps for beginners. When someone complains about slow speed what they're really saying is that the stages should have been designed so poorly that you could run through everything without any knowledge or skill. They want it to be Sonic the Hedgehog.

From Kommander, creator of Game Kommander:

kommander_hzk @1000MEGASHOCK I think Hard Corps: Uprising is inarguably one of the best Contra game ever made.

I can't say since I just got a 360 a couple of days ago, but I guess it says something that a downloadable game helped me to do it, along with Vanquish.

What kind of screen/resolution are you using? How does it look on it?

Also, Josh, you've brought in two outside quotes in this thread without providing any links for them (the moves breakdown and the Twitter post), so come on dude. It's rude to assume that I have nothing better to do with my time than google your fucking posts, track down the fucking links, and then edit your posts with them. So fix your goddamn posts and don't fucking do it again.
