Welcome

The internet reacts to Insomnia articles...

http://evo-ge.blogspot.com/2010/12/end- ... folks.html

I end this blog today. Why? Because it is a pointless waste of time. The more I read Insomnia and the texts of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche start to sink in, the more I realize this and actually feel guilty for posting this trash online.

I have no great experiences yet to impart, nothing important to write, no expertise. Even if I did, there would be better forms to write it than blogging. How harmful blogging has been seems evident in how forced a lot of my writing has been. Not to mention the low quality of it all (yes, I've been aware of it all the time).

So, this is a goodbye then. At least for now.

If only more bloggers would follow this guy's example. How much more pleasant this internet thing would be...

James Szklarz wrote:Hi, Alex.

If I remember correctly, it was around 2 months ago when my older brother began feeble attempts to persuade me into thinking that videogames need to change. He would tell me he had this idea where "videogames must be more than videogames because the market for this is lacking originality". I was quick to disagree with him on the matter as in my mind he was trivially incorrect. This wasn't just one encounter either, he seems to be fanatical about it.

Shortly after this debate, a friend of mine (who is now purchasing a list of books that you recommended) told me about your website and once I looked into it I was not so surprised to gain knowledge of the term artfag, a term that quite accurately describes my brothers condition. Now you don't know my brother, however I'm guessing you would have met people similar to him before. He is the type that will defend something with all his willpower if he is to believe that it is correct.

This is a very sad situation as my brother has been unofficially diagnosed with artfag syndrome, not because I know he is delusional but because I have to put up with all his shit, every day, every week, every year (until of course I get rid of him or he gets rid of himself).

So I am searching for a cure...May it be that I have to refer him to your website? Or should I just call him an artfag for the rest of his life?

On a more serious note, what are your thoughts about the Touhou series? I've just started playing Touhou 6 - EoSD and recently downloaded 7,8 and 10 and I am addicted.

Thanks,
James

Yes, my website is the only known cure for artfagginess. However, I would not get my hopes up if I were you. Artfagginess is an extremely powerful disease -- although my website has been known to on occasion cure it, the rate of success is miniscule indeed.

As for Touhou -- I don't play these games. From what I've seen of them they are certainly about a million miles ahead than anything the kids in the TIGSource forums will ever manage to make, but I still have several hundreds of arcade games to master before I become so desperate as to devote much time to amateur efforts of any kind -- even Japanese ones. Still, there are several Touhou reviews on the site by other people, and if you want to know more about these games that would be a good place to start.

That was my first reaction, too. But, really, is there anybody in the game journalism - or game philosophy - who can throw him off his throne? He may be smashing his opponents like a Nietsche-wielding Hulk, but I really have no arguments against his truths. He may be saying the simplest things, but rarely, if ever, I've seen anyone telling them as plainly. You may try to discard this guy - he really isn't pleasant to talk to - but then who you will be left with?

And I saved the worst one for the end. A dozen-page article by an unknown blogger comparing me to another unknown blogger who is stupider than even the journlolists.

Extremely offensive, to say the least.

http://sethhearthstone.wordpress.com/20 ... -feelings/

He's taking the same approach with me as with that blogger. Chip-chip-chipping away, as if that could change anything.

Stimulation is a kind of simulation, retard. In fact they are the same thing. The two concepts are differentiated by the perspective. In the context that the question was posed to me ("what does music simulate?"), we were viewing the problem from the outside -- from the perspective of the simulacrum. In the context of your little blog post, you are viewing it from the inside -- from the perspective of the subject. In other words: the subject is STIMULATED; the simulacrum SIMULATES.

Meh. Keeping trying, little dude. One day you might even manage to point out a typo to me.

More from the little prick:

http://sethhearthstone.wordpress.com/20 ... -addendum/

Here, have a quote:

Jean Baudrillard wrote:Everything is destined to reappear as simulation. Landscapes as photography, women as the sexual scenario, thoughts as writing, terrorism as fashion and the media, events as television.

Writing, then, simulates thoughts. Writing is NOT thoughts -- it SIMULATES them. Get it, fuckface?

In the same manner, music simulates feelings. Music is NOT feelings -- it SIMULATES them.

If you still don't get it, you never will, regardless of how many "addenda" you add to your little blog that's not worth the space it takes up in your hosting provider's hard drive.

lmfao

This dude is easily the stupidest person to reply to my articles, in that at least the rest of them scribble a couple of asinine one-liners and get it out of their system; whereas he, on the other hand, seems determined to scribble the equivalent of at least a book, if not more, on the subject.

Another huge article from that guy that counters nothing and muddles everything:

http://sethhearthstone.wordpress.com/20 ... -exploits/

I am never going to address anything he says point by point, because it'd be a waste of time. But I will say this regarding this specific article: he is trying to hold on to the concept of emergence for games, via a lot of fallacious arguments and verbal gymnastics. It is a typical reaction for videogame people. But if you can't let go of emergence, you'll never be able to understand the difference between videogames and the universe. His chatter, taken on its own, is pitiful, but behind it stands something even more pitiful: his incapacity to lower the value of his little hobby.

In fact the only time genuine emergence happens in videogames, is when the game crashes because of a hardware issue. Try to explain this statement if you can...

That is the only time when something happens in a game that wasn't programmed in. It has to be a hardware issue, because software bugs are programmed in, just accidentally.

God will have the clearest understanding. Not 100%, but more than anyone else. And by God I mean the ultimate Overman, not the Christian one.

wmotamedi wrote:@PCoderch You are fortunate. That man who you're looking for exists in our time. Go to Insomnia.ac. The site's creator is infamous for being the most intelligent man to have ever lived... and also the most controversial. Read his polemic "On the History of Art Games." It's unlike anything you've ever read, or perhaps experienced. I would not be here taking an interest in Wittgenstein if it wasn't for his writing. He draws conclusions from EVERYTHING. I have no idea how he does it. I envy him.

The way I do it (i.e. draw conclusions from "everything") is by having the need to solve these problems. If you do not absolutely need to solve a problem, you never will -- because, after all, you don't need to.

poli4007 wrote:@PCoderch Wittgenstein is my hero too. You are probably reffering to the Tractatus, which W. himself abandoned as fundamentally mistaken. his real important contribution does not synthesize, rather expands. No axioms and no definitions, no precisions. No explanations, only descriptions (this in his own words). He doesn't talk about how things work, but about how language works and how its misunderstanding leads to philosophical puzzlements, which are not to be resolved, but dissolved.

But dissolution is a form of resolution. If you dissolve these "puzzlements", you have also resolved them, in the sense that they do not bother you anymore. At any rate that last sentence is a great summary of Wittgenstein's import. Proof that you can find diamonds even in trash -- even in YouTube comments.

By the way, do not assume that, in the passages I quote, I agree with or am not bothered by whatever I don't comment on. I simply comment on a few things here and there that seem to me worth commenting on. If I was passing every line I quote through a sieve I'd never be done with berating people for their sloppiness in writing and in thinking. This dude in one of the quotes above, for example, called my writing "pretentious". What can I possibly say to that? He simply doesn't know what the word means, or interprets it to mean "anything above my level of understanding", or "anything taken too seriously that does not appear to me to deserve being taken seriously", or something else along these lines.

I really need to stop reading what subhumans have to say about me. It's just depressing.

I missed that a while back:

ghost4 wrote:Video game journalism isn't any more of a niche than reviewing movies, RC vehicles, restaurants or boats is. What you probably mean is that video game journalism has been a small business until very recently, but this is not so. Print magazines have existed since the seventies, and Wikipedia alone lists about 200 publications. But print media already reached its zenith and is now in decline, so by growth you must mean the Internet. Yes, I suppose there is lots of growth if you qualify "stupid teenager/college student with blog account" and "interchangeable site that repackages press releases and spews out as much worthless shit as the servers can handle" as growth. After all, even tumors are described as growing.

This guy is pretty good at rephrasing and condensing a lot of the stuff I've said without messing up the meaning. His posts are generally worthwile to read. However, he seems to also value that Malstrom dude's views for some weird reason.

The title of this thread is "difficulty-getting-to-sleep.ac":

tataki wrote:There's something that bothers me.
I can't seem to be able to find a place on the internet where I can have an intelligent respectable discussion about points that were raised by the owner of this website.
I don't think that exists a single person out there who disagrees with him on 100% of the things. Everyone agrees with some things and disagree with others- And it should not be a taboo to admit that.

The problem is that everyone on the internet is using his harsh attitude as an excuse to avoid discussing about those important, interesting issue.

He banned me and said some things that would be extremely offensive to me, but I'm not letting myself get offended or letting it cloud my judgement. I'm above that.

I find the assumption that ideas and arguments have "exclusive ownership", and that people reject an argument based on where they read it first (or where they read it "loudest") is insulting to common sense and is hurting any progress we can have in intellectual discussion about video games and related other subjects.

Also speaking about him in code names because he googles to find it and mocks you on his forum is pathetic and childish behavior in my opinion.
I mean come on people...

I admit- I see posts here talking about the symbolism in Limbo and "humble" video games and share you-know-who's opinion that this is a bunch of nonsense. (Remember: Thinking YOUR OPINION is nonsense does not mean I'm mean I'm disrespecting YOU or belittling YOU.)
But I don't want to respond in those threads and look for internet drama, and I also don't want to take you-know-who's "I'm smart&you are stupid" attitude.

Is it too much to ask for a respectable honest discussion?

Let's give a few examples to get the discussion going-

1. I remember him praising 3S in his SF4 thread and dissing SF4 for the wrong reasons, and then nothingxs came and gave him a wonderful explanation why 3S is a bad game and not good as he thinks, and the real flaws in SF4 are. This was some quality analysis and too bad his forums are private now so I can't show you that, but maybe nothingxs can write this again here.

2. I agree with his article about how no one out there is worthy enough to make a "top 10" lists because it assumes that some genres are above others and no one is an authority to make such big statements.
But then on his forums he said that he IS an exception to that rule and he is able to do that, and with that part I disagree and give #1 as bonus proof for that.

See? it's not hard to talk w/o having a shitstorm.

His point about SF is bullshit, since I have never expressed an opinion on Street Fighter III, let alone Third Strike, so he just hallucinated that because he can't read. But the rest is true enough. This thread was started on SB's main forum, and then the admin moved it into the "Axe", where all threads are automatically deleted after they get pushed to the second page. So basically all SB discussion on me is at first actively discouraged, and whenever it does occur is quickly deleted. They are even so much as afraid to use my name (either real or username), and have developed a bunch of ever-changing esoteric code names when talking about me (DMX, Pikachu, clambo, spicybalm, etc. lol).

The thread is currently three pages of everyone ganging up on the poor guy and spamming and trolling the hell out of him. Most of it is done at such a low level there's nothing to even quote, but there is one exception, which is worth quoting because it betrays the degree to which these people feel terrorized by me:

Now the people here will be forever suspicious that you aren't just one of his sycophantic followers who will dutifully report back to him or, even better, suspect that you are just one his own sockpuppets accounts. This suspicion will follow you everywhere now and frankly I'm not even sure having an honest, respectable discussion about this particular topic with you is possible given that no one has any way of determining if you are simply as you appear or if you have other motives.

1. I feel sorry for you that somehow you got hurt so badly that you start thinking shit like this.

2. He reads this forum anyway, as he has been for years so he sees whatever you post here anyway, and laugh about it in his forum like he always does. The question is why do you give a fuck?

It is insane to me that such people even exist. Before getting involved with the internet I'd have vehemently denied the mere possibility, and even now I do double-takes whenever I come across this kind of attitude.

I'm also using Chrome. Looks like the script still needs some work.

The article is quite incisive. Juul is given no rest? It's like watching a game of SF2X between Daigo playing Ryu and a cat given Dan to play but more concerned about smashing some annoying fly that keeps landing on its buttons.

http://twitter.com/#!/GameCorrupt

haha yeah, he's going more and more insane everyday, it's fun to watch

alex kierkegaard: a man with incredibly dangerous ideas but thankfully no political power

"20 euros to join my forum where i will ban you" bro even something awful knows better than to do that, and they're in High Demand

he gets worse every week. fuckloads of money from pyramid schemes and organized crime though

when his forum was free, i ended up reading about a dozen threads which gave away his claimed life story

even if they're true, in order for them to fit together he'd have to be over 40

playing pikmin in the alps. living on the smallest island in hawaii for day labor for a few years. going to japan and beating daigo

becoming the secret head of the greek mafia. served as head inspiration for kratos in god of war. became a nuclear physicist out of college

he's almost completely lost it. i can't even take him seriously anymore. i've come up with refutations for his theories anyway

basically, he's the 21st century schizoid man

i'm guessing. he doesn't work that's for sure, and based on the few pics he posted he's fuckin' mean and will fuck you up

he was apparently trained by a crazy british guy in mma, quit being a high-level researcher because it was too boring

normally i would never believe a life story so patently ridiculous but evidence has been presented by multiple parties

this guy ain't no troll. when you go on his off-topic forum and the only people not banned are in the "gun talk" thread...

It's really amusing to see up close how this "legend-building" process works. There is some truth in more or less every one of his statements, but he is systematically blowing all of them out of proportion (I didn't live "on the smallest island in hawaii for a few years", I lived on Oahu for three months; I wasn't trained in "mma", but in plain simple kickboxing; I did not become a "nuclear physicist" out of college, I became an aerospace engineer and worked at a plasma physics research project; etc. etc.) And if all this is taking place right now, while I am still alive, before I've even had a chance to publish my most important work, wtf will happen ten or twenty years down the line, let alone in a century or two? The prospect is hilarious! When I go back and read how Borgia, for example, has been downright demonized by historians for five centuries, it all finally starts making a great deal more sense.

And lol at his comment about my "lack of political power". Nietzsche had no political power either, moron, but Hitler, Franco, Mussolini and Stalin all read him. At the highest level, that's how philosophy works. You can't expect a single fucking man to do everything! If I had had political power, I wouldn't have had any philosophical insight: just go ask Obama what he thinks about Baudrillard, lol. (Not that Obama actually has any political power, but just sayin')
