The question is, where is that "network shooter" based on a "legendary franchise" we have been led to expect? And is this a fucking widescreen yoko vert shooter? With the sides of the screen blanked-out into the bargain? Did no one tell them that the Vewlix's screen is actually rotatable?

Looks rad except for the environment and mecha designs, just like with Border Down and Under Defeat.

Music by Keishi Yonao, a "colleague" of mine. :) He's a good composer, and it's nice to see him recognized beyond the world of hentai products, and in such a prestigious context as a G.Rev shooter at that.

Man... So happy to see it coming out... but 360-only? And fucking downloadable? At least it will be interesting to see how much, if at all, G.rev will stray from the arcade model now that they are making a console-exclusive title. I will be pretty blown away if they manage to remain strictly true to the arcade norms.

As for the video, it looks just great. It could have used more detail in the graphics department, of course... This would look great on a Dreamcast -- but on the 360 at 720p it just doesn't quite cut it. And the music is pure 90's stuff. Not sure if that's good or bad, but it brings back so many memories...

I just wish they'd at least come out with a proper disc release... Even fucking Exzeal got a disc release, and Radirgy Noa got TWO! Dammit.

Strania will be also be released in arcades through Taito's digital distribution system NESiCAxLive, which was recently put into use in December 2010.

Some beautiful action scenes: http://youtu.be/UpB-lGsxOR8

It looks a bit slow, but for some reason G.Rev games usually aren't very impressive until you actually play them (I thought Under Defeat looked boring when I first saw it). Some cool visual effects in there, but design-wise it's kinda tacky.

Yesterday I finally found an arcade in the town I currently reside in that hosts Strania. Unfortunately it's about a 30 minute bicycle ride from my home but I can't wait to go back.

The game is of course "on-rails" just as any standard 2D shooter but the background changes in all kinds of awesome ways so that it really feels like you're fighting in a 3D environment. At the moment, the only thing I can think of that comes close to the impression that Strania left me with is some of the boss battles in G Darius. Strania however takes it up several notches by also occasionally changing the perspective from over-head to rear-view, or even closing in on the player model. It sounds a bit suspicious, I know, but it really heightens the experience a lot since it lets you fight some of the enemies up-close (especially cool if you have the sword equipped of course), face to face! Some passages are so awesomely directed in terms of visuals that they basically had me squeezing the joystick with the left hand and grasping for the edge of the control panel with my right as if I were afraid to fall off a roller-coaster cart. This game is intense!

Darius Burst's (which sat at the other side of the room, and in all other respects also seems pretty damn awesome) presentation (except for the actual cabinet and its sound system) is laughable in comparison. The only complaint I can utter for now is that some of the background images (in Strania) are a bit low in their resolution.

I've only spent a handful of credits so far and haven't really gotten used to the weapons system yet, but I'll write down some more impressions when I've gotten a little further.

Strania is more about learning how the different weapons work and how they should be put to use than it is about bullet dodging, which is a nice contrast to what "that other" developer has put out lately, and I generally prefer complex weapon systems over complex bullet patterns. Strania isn't bad, but because it looks so cold, empty and lacks character I'd never call it great.

Gimme bosses that look like this!
http://www.pcengine.com.br/mystic/Cd_e401.jpg
(Spoiler warning: it's the last boss of Mystic Formula)

I made it to the fourth boss on my next-to-last play, and the last time I played it I encountered some bug which prevented me from shooting and I lost all my lives. I can't see myself playing this ever again.

Anyone else tried the game?

I played 2 credits before Sine Mora consumed me. It was indeed a letdown. Not a huge letdown, but possibly G.rev's worst arcade game, and certainly their least charismatic. Still, this sounds a bit too harsh for me:

It still looks like a 3-star game so far, at the very least, and certainly more playable than, say, MileStone's entire catalogue, or most of the new low-budget shooters coming out today (Eschatos, etc.), so even though I put it on the backburner, I can certainly see myself going for the clear over a sufficient lengthy amount of time.

As for the mechanics, it is indeed more on the puzzler side than on the shooter (though nowhere near Ikaruga levels of puzzler...), which is fine with me considering how many pure shooters we already have. My only minor gripe so far is that it assaults you with all these different weapons from like the first two minutes, and makes things needlessly confusing. Why not space them out over a stage or two, as usual? But I am sure I'll get used to it after a dozen or so credits, so who cares.

For me it's the other way around, which is why I prefer Cave's catalog, as a whole, to G.rev's, but the ideal is of course both aspects in a single game at the same time, cranked up as high as your brain and your reflexes can just about handle.

Yeah, I agree with you on all points. I probably spent about fifteen credits in total and was seriously fed up with the game's environments and patterns by then. Much of the game's appeal was the surprise factor of the original camera work, but that gets old pretty soon too. There's an extra mode that looked well-made though, and that at least is actually a reason for me to try the game some more.
