ARMA 3 is set in the near-future, during the mid-2030s, where NATO forces deployed in the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea are trying to hold off a massive Iranian military offensive from the east. During the singleplayer campaign, the player will take the role of a British Special Forces soldier, Captain Scott Miller. Initially, the player must survive on their own after friendly forces are defeated in a failed NATO operation. During the campaign, the player will face everything from lone wolf infiltration missions to the commanding of large scale armored operations. The player will be able to choose different objectives and weaponry (such as UAVs, artillery, and air support) according to their play style.

ARMA 3 takes place on the Aegean islands of Lemnos (renamed as Altis) and Stratis of Greece, in the Mediterranean Sea. They will feature photo-realistic terrain and water environments. Altis will be the largest official terrain in the Arma series with ground area covering 270 km². The smaller island, Stratis, will expand over an area of 19 km². The islands will feature over 50 villages with buildings that are both enterable and destroyable.

So, when will you release Arma 3 then?

"Soon" has become an overused word, but we are preparing all we need to unveil our plans right this moment.

Do I have to run the game through Steam?

Yes, it will be required to run the game through Steam. We do not believe in always-online types of DRM however, so Offline mode will be supported.

Will I be able to buy a boxed copy of Arma 3?

There will be boxed copies in most regions. These may either be Steam Codes in a retail package, or also contain DVD data (speeding up installation). You will still have to run and update through Steam the first time.

I don't want any of the benefits Steam brings me, so why should I care?

There was a very real chance there would be no Arma 3 this year otherwise.

Bohemia Interactive today announced their plans for the upcoming PC-exclusive tactical military shooter game, Arma 3™. From next week onward, Tuesday March 5th, all are welcome to try out the authentic military gameplay and assist in the game’s development by participating in the Arma 3 Alpha. The Alpha will feature a limited amount of playable and sandbox content, receive regular updates and remain accessible until Arma 3’s Beta starts – which is expected in the second quarter of this year. The full and final version of Arma 3 is scheduled for release in Q3 2013.

Featured in the Arma 3 Alpha are four showcase missions (Infantry, Vehicles, SCUBA and Helicopter), a limited subset of weapons and vehicles, two multiplayer scenarios, the powerful scenario editor and modding support. The 20 km² island of Stratis, which is positioned right off the coast from Arma 3’s main destination ‘Altis’ (270 km²), will form the backdrop of the Arma 3 Alpha.

To participate in the Alpha, people can purchase the Arma 3 Alpha (24.99 EUR/19.99 GBP/32.99 USD) or Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition (39.99 EUR/34.99 GBP/49.99 USD) on Steam. Extras in the Digital Deluxe Edition include a digital soundtrack*, digital maps*, digital tactical guide*, and a Steam Gift of Arma: Cold War Assault (formerly known as Operation Flashpoint™: Cold War Crisis). Both versions include access to the Arma 3 Beta plus a digital copy of the complete game upon release. The price of each edition will increase once the Arma 3 Beta and final game become available.

Those who would like to sponsor development further, also have the option to purchase the Arma 3 Supporter Edition (69.99 EUR/59.99 GBP/91.99 USD) from Store.bistudio.com. Besides the additional Arma development support, this edition ships with all the extras from the digital deluxe edition, a Steam Gift of Arma X, all future Arma 3 DLCs, a special forums medal and the opportunity to have their names featured in the game’s credits. The full overview of editions, and their conditions, can be found on Arma 3’s new website.

Last but not least, Bohemia Interactive also intends to release a free, limited version of the Alpha, named Arma 3 Alpha Lite. The Alpha Lite will be available one week after the initial Alpha release, on Thursday March 14th, and does not include a multiplayer component and modding support. Access to the Alpha Lite is invite-only and can be obtained from people who have purchased the Arma 3 Alpha. Invites will also be randomly distributed via the Arma 3 social channels and as giveaways by selected media outlets. The Arma 3 Alpha Lite expires on June 15, does not provide access to the Arma 3 Beta and does not include a copy of the final game.

Grady McKinney wrote:As we stated above, this game is solely developed on the PC. This is not a console port, and therefore this game can utilize the PC to its full potential. This allows a ton of graphics options, the highest view distance ever in a game, and incredible texture quality and fidelity. ARMA III makes big improvements in the engine compared to ARMA II.

Grady McKinney wrote:Editor's Thoughts

Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3 move over, Arma III has just surpassed you on outdoor visual quality, fidelity, and performance demand. Arma III is a game that proves the PC platform’s superiority over console gaming. The PC is utilized, the graphics cards are utilized, in a most impressive way. Words cannot describe it, one must experience the game at the highest quality settings to understand the level of detail and visual quality represented in Arma III.

This game has better, and more realistic visuals, and texture quality compared to Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3. Beyond the textures, object detail, and shaders, Arma III also has the highest viewing distance in any game. Pop-up of objects and textures are a reduced phenomenon in this game, thanks to the high degree of view. That view distance, and object distance also greatly affect the performance, and rightly so. It is refreshing to have a game that doesn't compromise on view and object distance, and lets the gamer go all out if they wish to. This is the power of the PC, the awesome scalability and potential for long view and object distances.

Beyond the visuals, Arma III is demanding on performance. With the ability to set "ultra" texture and object, and shader settings, to the view distance and object distance, to the myriad of AA options, this game pushes today's graphics card to the limit. Even the mighty TITAN isn't enough for Arma III. Arma III demands SLI or CrossFire to run it at high resolutions with all the details up, and still cannot maximize the view distance. Arma III will have longevity when it comes to graphics cards comparisons. You'll be wanting the next generation of GPUs for this game; it simply gives you a reason to upgrade.

We will be adding Arma III to our gaming suite used in reviews. We will be using Arma III in the upcoming AMD GPU launches this month, and moving forward. Arma III will be a great game to truly stress and test the graphics performance of next generation video cards.

Arma III is what I want as a graphically forward looking game. This game should be the benchmark currently for all others to exceed in terms of visual quality. The single player campaign missions will be out in free DLC format this month. We may follow-up with performance and IQ article in those campaign missions as those may be more complex and demanding than the showcases.

The Bottom Line

This is the type of performance taxing game with great graphics that pushes our hardware to the limit. All of our single-GPU video cards failed to play ARMA III at its ultra settings at 2560x1600 without greatly sacrificing our visible range. This is not a bad thing, this should help encourage manufacturers to make better and more powerful hardware, and push forward the PC gaming industry.

Bohemia Interactive deserves huge kudos. It provided an impressive game in ARMA III and improved upon the franchise by progressing the game’s engine to Real Virtuality 4 technology. This means better visual quality from the graphics options and tons of post processing effects, that truly showcase the artists on staff. And did we mention the innovative 20km view distance? That is a phenomenal range compared to other video games on the market.

Our high-end video cards struggled with the highest settings available at 2560x1600, but performed much more admirably at 1080p. The midrange video cards struggled at 1080p. All in all, ARMA III and its greedy demand for graphics horsepower impressed us tremendously.
