“The next step is exactly what you are experiencing here at GT Academy. Racing is a human drama and I would like to achieve that in the next game.”

That’s about to change, according to information GTPlanet has received from local sources familiar with the matter (whom have requested their names not be disclosed). They report that Polyphony Digital engineers have visited the circuit several times to scan, photograph, and collect data from around the famous racetrack.

The team was also spotted on Stowe Circuit, driving the Nissan Navara seen here, fitted with photography and scanning equipment.

Stowe Circuit – a small, one-mile track contained entirely within the more famous Silverstone GP circuit - actually hosts the majority of the driving challenges at Race Camps.

Of course, it is not yet clear when players will be able to drive Polyphony’s virtual rendition of the circuit, be it in a Gran Turismo 5 update or in the next title to be released in the series.

Gran Turismo 6 rumors have been swirling around the Internet for several years, beginning almost immediately upon the release of Gran Turismo 5 on PlayStation 3 in 2010, when we learned that its sequel is in development. We learned that new tracks are being crafted and that the game may even be coming to Vita.

Now comes word from GTPlanet of an interview Silicon Republic conducted with SCEE’s Senior Vice President Michael Denny (one of the men you saw on stage during last week’s PlayStation 4 reveal in New York City). The 51 second audio clip, which was posted because of controversy surrounding a prior GTPlanet report citing the Silicon Republic interview, clearly has Denny state that Gran Turismo 6 is coming to PlayStation 3 – not PlayStation 4 – in 2013.

“You look at the games coming out on PlayStation 3 this year,” Denny says, “[like] The Last of Us, Beyond, GT6…”

Denny says this without skipping a beat and doesn’t at all seem concerned that he seems to have let the cat out of the bag. And someone in Denny’s position would most certainly know the longterm software plans for all PlayStation platforms.

We reached out to Sony for comment and clarification. All a Sony rep was willing to tell us was the following: “In 2010, Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Polyphony Digital had commenced development for Gran Turismo 6. We look forward to sharing further details on this title in the near future.” When pressed for more information beyond that, Sony refused to give us further comment.

It wouldn’t at all be surprising for Gran Turismo 6 to be prepped for release on PlayStation 3. As Sony stated, the first-party studio responsible for the series, Polyphony Digital, has been working on the game since 2010, a time when PS4 dev kits may not have been available even to Sony-owned studios. Likewise, this may put into perspective why Sony is allowing another of its studios – Evolution – to work on a Gran Turismo-like game for PlayStation 4 in the form of DriveClub.

We’ll keep you updated on Gran Turismo 6 when we learn more.

A retailer listing for Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 lends further weight to reports that Polyphony's next racing sim will be a current-generation game.

Electronics specialist retailer Newegg has a listing for the as-yet-unrevealed title, clearly stating PS3 as the destination platform, but is void of any further information.

This comes after SCEE senior vice-president Michael Denny appeared to have let slip that Gran Turismo 6 will remain a PS3 title, despite the looming launch of the PlayStation 4 in "holiday 2013".

CVG understands that Sony is weeks away from revealing its next Gran Turismo title.

Grand Turismo 6 was announced in 2010 when series creator Kazunori Yamauchi talked openly about the project in an interview. No official release date is set.

Gran Turismo 6 is coming! Kazunori Yamauchi announces new game at Gran Turismo 15th anniversary event

Sony Computer Entertainment today announced Gran Turismo 6, the latest version of PlayStation’s best-selling franchise, will be released in Holiday Season 2013. The news was revealed today by legendary Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi at an event held to celebrate 15 years of the 70-million-selling series.

GT6 for PlayStation 3 will bring new levels of authenticity to ‘the Real Driving Simulator’ as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface. A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content. Meanwhile, the game is also set for expanded connectivity with other devices such as smart phones and tablets and increased social and community functions.

All of the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5, which has sold over 10m copies since launching in 2010, will be retained in GT6. But notable new additions to the already impressive line-up of historic cars, road cars and the latest race cars, brings the total car list to 1200 at launch, with new cars set to be continually added online. Several thousand aerodynamic parts and custom wheels will be available for almost all cars, and players can personalize their own custom cars in game to the greatest ever level possible.

The UK’s famous Silverstone Circuit will be just one of seven new locations in GT 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available, 19 of them brand new. There will also be regular additions of new tracks set to be made available online. The improved course maker function will provide gorgeous scenery spanning several tens of square kilometers including the magnificent backdrop of Andalucía.

The theme of Gran Turismo’s innovative collaborations with partner companies will increase with the inception of GT6. A number of exciting new projects that blur the line between the virtual and real will be announced in the run up to the game’s launch. Not least of these is GT Academy, a collaboration with Nissan to unearth real racing driver talent that first ran in 2008. It was announced during the event that the competition returns for its biggest ever year in 2013, with the entry mechanic set to take place on an exclusive GT6 demo in July.

Other notable partnerships in the development of GT6 have been with tyre manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive. Both companies are active in the commercial car industry and in racing, and they have acted as technical development partners for the game’s new physics engine, for its tyre and suspension kinematic modeling, creating an even more realistic experience for GT fans.

“It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo,” explained Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit. “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We’re pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!”

Further news about GT 6 will be revealed at the forthcoming E3 and Gamescom events and on gran-turismo.com
