Koji Igarashi has announced a new Dracula-style game with a Kickstarter campaign:

  • An exploration-focused, side-scrolling platformer featuring RPG and crafting elements.
  • Koji Igarashi, the namesake of "Igavania"-style games, is leading the project, with Michiru Yamane composing the music and Inti Creates leading the development.
  • If funded, the game will be developed for XBOX One, Playstation 4, and PC. For the first time on Kickstarter, backers will have the option to receive actual PS4 / XB1 / PC retail discs.

From the FAQ:

WHY 2.5D?
IGA decided to go with 2.5D for this project for both financial and artistic reasons. All decisions in game development involve trade-offs, and for Bloodstained a 2.5D world built on Unreal Engine 4 was the right choice to balance development time, graphical fidelity, budget, and scope.

At the same time, IGA is very excited about exploring the paths a 2.5D style opens up within the classic Igavania formula. As he begins a new chapter of his career as a developer, he's looking forward to trying things that will enhance, rather than detract from, that core gameplay.

Still, though, we would never discount the fans' love for that classic style. The development team is looking forward to working with backers every step of the way to decide on custom shaders that will give the game a distinctive, hand-crafted look. Games like Guilty Gear and Strider are proof that 2.5D can be handled in a way that honors a classic aesthetic while allowing for new possibilities; that’s what IGA hopes to achieve with this project.

And of course, since it's an Igavania game, the 2D gameplay and feel are nonnegotiable.

The pitch video is hilarious. And it has co-op!

Kinda hard to get excited when release is two years away though.

Play demonstration with Igarashi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSYQErqbMtc

Very smart of them that they didn't use this for the start of the KS, and left it to three days before the end.

It's at $3.7M currently. Should be able to break 4 easily with this video, I should think.

Development Update - Bloodstained for Nintendo Switch
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ig ... ts/1818045

We interrupt your regularly scheduled update for some unscheduled breaking news: Bloodstained is coming to the Nintendo Switch.

The team was hoping to announce the release to backers once the Switch version was further underway, but because word got out early IGA wanted to talk about it here first. Here’s IGA:

Hello, this is IGA.

Thank you for always supporting us. I would like to give a message to the backers who pledged for the Wii U version of Bloodstained.

During our Kickstarter campaign, the Wii U was at the height of its popularity, but the situation has drastically changed after the release of Nintendo Switch.

This change made it difficult to receive the necessary support from the hardware maker, which has led us to drop the Wii U development and shift the development to Nintendo Switch.

We are very sorry that it has come to this after all your support, but we hope you will understand. We would like to respond by preparing options for our backers, such as moving your pledge to another version or requesting a refund if you don’t want any other version.

We hope you will continue to support us.

How this will work for Kickstarter and slacker backers: The Switch version is now available as an option in the backer survey for anyone who has a physical or digital version of Bloodstained coming, replacing the Wii U version. (Just use the same link you were sent to fill out your survey initially; if you have any problems with your survey, or don’t have your link any more, we can help: e-mail orders@fangamer.com.)

If you selected the Wii U version in your backer survey and you want the Switch version, you’re all set! The Switch version has replaced the Wii U version in the survey, so no further action is necessary on your part.

If you selected the Wii U version and you want to move to a PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Vita version, you can go to your backer survey and make the change now. (Click the "Change Your Survey Answers" link.)

If you selected the Wii U version and don't want any of the Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Vita versions, you're eligible for a cancellation and refund if you meet all the following criteria:

You filled out your backer survey and selected the Wii U version prior to this update.
You backed at an unlimited tier ($28 to $500)
You are able to receive a refund via PayPal
You submit your refund request before the April 20, 2017 deadline.
If you're eligible for a refund and backed at a tier that included two copies of the game, including the Wii U version, we can also help you adjust your tier to its single-copy equivalent. Refund requests will be processed via PayPal at a later date.

All requests should be e-mailed to orders@fangamer.com with the subject “Bloodstained Wii U refund.” (Please include the e-mail address associated with your PayPal account.)

Your regularly scheduled update is coming very soon! IGA has prepared introductions for three of the characters Miriam will meet as Bloodstained gets underway…

Not a backer yet?

You can back for the Switch version here.

They seemingly took the criticisms to heart and it looks considerably better with the visual improvements.

Insomnia wrote:Awkward-looking visuals and bland music plus fossilised mechanics which, instead of innovating, opted for repeating the tried-and-overstayed-its-welcome-by-two-decades formula: Iga's personal trademark of mediocrity.
