Aesthetically it looks like Killer 7, but I don't see an adventuring element being mentioned so it sounds like straight-up action, which given Grasshopper's pedigree is not a very good idea. Still, one to keep an eye on.

Also, glad to see they seem to have ditched Nintendo's shitty systems for good.

Looks great. A perfect blend of the Killer 7 and No More Heroes rendering techniques and artstyles. If only Platinum would lend them a couple of people to work on the mechanics, Grasshopper would be such an awesome company. But maybe they are keeping them dumbed down on purpose... Would that make sense business-wise? But isn't Platinum selling more copies than Grasshopper? I don't follow sales numbers.

http://gematsu.com/2013/02/suda-yasuda-talk-killer-is-dead-development

While Lollipop Chainsaw was bright “sunlight,” Suda wanted to follow that up with “shadow” as his next game.

Asked about their respective roles during game development, Yasuda said that he is broadly responsible for QA and quality control, the battle system, and event scenes, while Suda directs the whole game and acts its visual designer. Their roles were separated during development of Lollipop Chainsaw as well.

Yasuda is also assertively designing “Gigolo Mode” but unfortunately, cannot share any more details at this time. Initially, the mode was not very important, but it gradually gained significance during development, and is now a great way to relax after tough battles.

Charge Gun: Using the blood collected by the wires, it releases a strong surge blast. By charging energy, you can create a blast that engulfs even more enemies. But on the other hand doing this causes you to be defenseless, so you have to pay close attention when using it.

Left Arm: Due to some accident, a special flesh reconstruction was performed on Mondo’s left arm. The left arm is powered by the blood of a villain who has been consumed by dark matter. It becomes a weapon that demonstrates various abilities in battle.

Ninja

Right in the middle of a fight, this mysterious beauty Scarlet appears suddenly right before Mondo’s eyes. She is a sexy nurse who carries a huge syringe filled with a bright color. With her provocative poses and speech, is she attempting to seduce Mondo during an execution mission? Is it an execution, or a moment with a beautiful woman? The player’s distress synchronizes with Mondo’s distress…

Killer is Dead is split into two mission types: normal missions where you fight around the world as an executioner, and Gigolo Missions where you face off as a gigolo against “Mondo’s Girls,” or ladies Mondo encounters around the world.

Mondo will meet beautiful women during his fights and can deepen his relationship with them through Gigolo Missions. As a reward for winning over the hearts of these ladies, he is granted useful things like “Muscle Back” equipment and enhanced abilities. Mondo aims to be the strongest executioner by raising his manliness and improving his gigolo skills.

Gigolo Glasses

The strongest tool a gigolo can use, the Gigolo Glasses can literally see through the heart and soul of a woman. When Mondo equips them, he can see the desires of the beautiful women who hold the key to the Gigolo Mission. In other words, he can see the gift that they want. Not only can he see their desires, but he can also peek into their clothing. The faint of heart will have to be careful. Use your manly conscious to know when to equip it.

Two Kinds of Gigolo Glasses

There are two types of gigolo glasses: the lovely and mysterious pink glasses with a heart on the frame and the manly and mysterious black glasses with a lady’s silhouette on the frame. Each one’s function and method of obtaining is shrouded in mystery.

> Mysterious Pink Glasses: Understanding a woman’s feelings is difficult. If you put on these glasses, which secretly reveal a woman’s true feelings, can you see right through even her body and soul?

> Mysterious Black Glasses: Everything about these glasses is a mystery. How will it’s function and how will its acquisition be different?

When Killer is Dead protagonist, Mondo Zappa, isn’t out seducing attractive women or getting a peek at their undergarments using his see-through sunglasses, he’s out fighting enemies, and lots of them. Now, Kadokawa Games have introduced some combat features in the game.

In combat, Mondo will be using his beloved katana, called Gekkou, which has the ability to absorb blood from his enemies. You can start out by continuously performing combos. The more combos you do, the higher the combo level increases. Once it reaches the max level, you’ll have a choice of four different finisher moves, called Final Judgment.

The four finishers will grant items with bonus effects such as Health Gauge increase, Blood Gauge increase, health recovery and skill level up. The items acquired depend on which finishers you use.

Mondo will have plenty of skills to take out Wires and other enemies around him. Some of these skills include the Gekkou Renewal, which temporarily cancels out the katana’s limits, allowing you to attack at high speed with enhanced power. The Healing ability uses blood in exchange for health recovery. They also say that there’s another skill that automatically recovers your health.

Kadokawa Games and Grasshopper Manufacture have shared new information on characters and download content included in the Japanese Premium Edition of Killer is Dead, a first-run limited edition available at the same price as the regular edition.

A downloadable episode called “The Man Who Snatched Blood” containing “beautiful women, nocturnal beasts, and lingerie” is included in the Premium Edition. The quality of the episode is promised to be on par with the main game’s episodes. Two new sub-missions are unlocked once the new episode is cleared.

Characters who appear in the episode include the previously revealed bloodsucker beauty Betty, and a new character named Sebastian.

Vampire “Beauty” Betty
Betty a.k.a. “Lifeforcer”
B/W/H: 88/56/84
Height: 170cm
Age: 256
Origin: German

Betty is a beautiful vampire co-existing with humans (a real beauty) who loves wine, but prefers the blood of strong men. She becomes one of the Bryan Execution Office’s clients after requesting Mondo carry out the execution of Sebastian, who transformed into an enhanced being known as a “Wire.” Mondo will face Sebastian in his castle.

Betty only appears in the downloadable episode and is also the fourth Mondo Girl.

Execution Target Sebastian
Sex: Male
Height: 180cm
Age: 50
Origin: English (UK)

Sebastian is a gentleman with a strong interest in vampires who captivates beautiful women with his suave appearance. He hates being disturbed by people. An execution target with repulsive attacks, he transforms into an abominable monster when engaged in battle.

He only appears in the downloadable episode and is not part of the main game.

Also detailed are two new enemies. Dark Eyes are huge, armored, flying eyeball Wire creatures who suddenly appear out of thin air. They can summon Red Eye creatures, who appear from above the ground and attack Mondo with destructive beams. When destroying them, they explode, so it’s best to stay back on the final hit.

Killer is Dead is due out in Japan on August 1, and in North America and Europe on an unannounced day in August.

Screen tearing on the 360 version is the worst I've ever seen. It's like there are waves on the screen or something. Or like an earthquake is constantly about to tear the backgrounds in a dozen pieces. I can't believe they okayed it for release. On the other hand, three missions in and the game is good. Genuinely good. And the tearing is not bothersome during the fights or the cutscenes, but only when you are exploring. I guess I might get used to it.

I looked online to see if the PS3 version is better, but from what little I could find it appears that the tearing, at least, is comparably bad in both versions.

Oli Welsh wrote:On Xbox 360, Killer is Dead has some of the worst screen tearing I've ever seen - a constant, ugly shear which ruins the integrity of the otherwise striking visuals.

Dustin Chadwell wrote:We only had the opportunity to play the PS3 version of the game, so I can’t speak for the Xbox 360 version, but on PS3 screen-tearing is a near constant issue and an unfortunate eyesore on an otherwise great looking game.

The_Luigi wrote:It's running on Unreal Engine 3 like Shadows and Lollipop, so go for the 360 version. That engine was optimized for the 360 and the PS3 versions of games running on it (Suda's games, the Devil May Cry reboot, Bulletstorm, NeverDead, etc.) tend to lack anti-aliasing, have longer loading times and are rather glitchy with sound/texture streaming.

AbnormalFreak wrote:
Rob_the_Ninja wrote:But Shadows of the Damned was better on PS3. And Lollipop Chainsaw wasn't that bad aside from some screen tearing in some of the cutscenes. Both versions of this game seem to suffer from some nasty screen tearing, though.

Slightly better graphics and maybe smoother performance, sure, but the audio compression is fecking terrible. I own both and the 360 version is the only one that sounds any good. (It's an EA issue because the PS3 version of Alice: Madness Returns suffers the same problem.)

I'll take sweet Yamaoka sounds and music in high quality over anything else. There really is a world of difference between the two releases, and I'm surprised Eurogamer didn't spot it when they did their face-off, unless for whatever reason European copies weren't affected.

If EA had cared enough to release a patch, that would have been golden.

The frequent, constant tearing definitely happens in the PS3 version as well. It surprised the hell out of me. I think it's the first console Unreal Engine 3 game I've played to have no vsync even when it's running at its framerate cap.

The Nightmare Continues: Deep Silver brings Killer Is Dead to PC

Deep Silver today announced that Killer Is Dead is making its way to PC. The “Killer Is Dead – Nightmare Edition” will be available for retail and digital download from May 9th 2014 and feature exclusive extra content. The price will be 19.99 EUR/USD/GBP.

The additional content includes

• New difficulty mode called Nightmare Mode. In this mode, enemies can only be defeated using the following attacks: Adrenaline Burst, Dodge Burst, Headshots, so the gameplay requires far more skill and tactics. Players will not be able to use the Final Judgement finisher (QTE mode) to defeat enemies.

• Smooth Operator Pack for console will be included and unlocked after Episode 3.

• Theater Mode - Rewatch cutscenes and get extended background information on characters, helping to unravel the story after your 1st playthrough

About Killer Is Dead

Killer Is Dead is set in a not-so-distant future similar to (but not the same as) the world we know now. The player takes control of an executioner named Mondo Zappa who wields a Japanese sword in his right hand and brandishes interchangeable weapons in his left artificial arm. His ultimate goal is to execute various heinous criminals scattered around the world and beyond.

Completely unique visuals and outstanding stylish action come together to deliver an unprecedented gaming experience in Killer Is Dead. The action title is being jointly developed by Kadokawa Games and Grasshopper Manufacture, with Suda51 lending his trademark sense of style at the helm.
