Here people can see how the game is supposed to look, on a proper monitor in a proper cabinet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbKSbTmZ8o8

The "screens" on HG101 and elsewhere on the net, as well as the direct footage on YouTube, make the game look like emulated garbage.

If you watch the entire video you'll see all the cool attack animations.

One thing I am wondering about is who made the graphical changes for the localization. I suspect they were done in Japan. If anyone can find for sure, it'd be interesting to know.

Sums up exactly the sentiments I fight against in the essay:

Skykid wrote:My only issue with belt scrollers (because I love 'em!) is that in terms of game design it's one of the only classic genres with a clear ceiling in terms of design possibility - which I think is the contributing factor in why they died first. FTG's and STG's, and even platform games, can be redesigned to play differently enough with a little invention, whereas belt scrollers are limited in where you can take them. D&D and Denjin Makai probably squeezed as much as they could out of the genre, but the blueprint can never really elevate itself into an markedly different experience.

Because Metal Gear Rising is not a markedly different experience from Double Dragon.

"But MGR is not a belt-scroller!"

And I suppose Quake is not an FPS?

The truth is the opposite of what he's saying. Belt-scrollers had far more possibilities for depth than STGs, FTGs and side-view action games, and that's why companies are spending tens of millions of dollars PER TITLE developing them today.

Double Dragon couldn't be expanded any further. Except by turning it into a JRPG.

I think this is the biggest moron on Shmups. He also says that Hard Corps: Uprising is "slow and crap", and whenever my name is mention (search for "icycalm") jumps in and spends several posts trying to convince everyone to stop mentioning me. And yet he now counts as an old-timer, although he only ARRIVED at the forum when I was LEAVING, and knew nothing about STGs then.

Or here he is, just a few posts back, saying something even stupider:

Skykid wrote:Kamitani struck gold this time: where he's previously struggled to make a modern 2D game with genuine longevity, the structure of Dragon's Crown finally finds a way to make it work.

As if 2D games don't have "genuine longevity" lol. As if Dragon's Crown wasn't finished in 20 hours whereas everything else can take you a LIFETIME to finish lol. And this is the same person who has made dozens of posts saying that my Arcade Culture essay is stuff that everyone knows. Dude, even after you have read it you still don't seem to know what I am saying. What an imbecile, and what an imbecilic forum where there isn't even a single person to stand up and challenge this non-stop no-holds-barred retardation.

If someone wants to copy-paste my review here I wouldn't mind:

Just sayin'. I'd do it myself if I weren't banned or if you could get an account approved there without having to wait for a year.

On second thought, meh, who gives a shit.

I am condemned to spend the rest of my life seeing unanswered threads that ask questions that I've already answered. It's annoying, but I might as well start getting used to it.
