You’ve been waiting for it and it’s finally here. At E3 2014 we unveiled two trailers, one for each of the PS4 projects we’re currently developing. The Uncharted game we’ve been working on sees the return of…well, why don’t you watch the trailer and see for yourself:

That’s Nathan Drake rendered in full 1080p glory, using the power of our PS4 engine. All footage you see in the trailer was captured completely in engine. We’re targeting 60fps for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and as you can see, the visual fidelity for our character models will reach new heights. In fact, thanks to the power of PS4, right now Drake’s Uncharted 4 model is over double the polygons of Joel from The Last of Us PS3.

The next generation of Nathan Drake is going to be very real and will explore what it means when Drake is forced back into the world of thieves. He will embark on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. It’s his greatest adventure yet and will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will be aiming for 1080p60 in-game, with Naughty Dog saying it's become an objective for all of its PlayStation 4 titles.

The Last of Us: Remastered, a retooling of last year's post-apocalyptic PlayStation 3 game, is Naughty Dog's first game on the current generation, and it maintains a steady 60fps while outputting at 1080p - what's set to be the benchmark for the developer in the future.

There had been some doubt as to whether The Last of Us: Remastered stuck to a steady 60fps, after it emerged there was a mode that locked the frame-rate at 30fps. "I think you'll find that it's really stable at 60fps," Naughty Dog's community strategist Arne Meyer told Eurogamer. "There's a lot of games out there that say they're 60, they feel 60 but if you push it you find some frame-rate dips. I think every game's going to do that, and it's going to happen to us too. It's not going to be something massive where you're going to tell the difference. I can't tell, but I'm not a frame-counter. Some people on NeoGAF can.

"When we came out and said we're trying to hit 60, we saw that there's a lot of debate between that, so why not cater to both sides of that," Meyer said of the option to include a 30fps lock. "If you've really got a strong preference for that, why not provide that customisation for you? Speaking of NeoGAF, there was a guy saying he gets more nauseous at 60fps than 30fps, so he's loving it. It's kind of an anomaly, and most people are like - why are you doing that? It's great that we're able to include it."

The Last of Us: Remastered is helping ease Naughty Dog into the current generation, something it was keen to do after struggling with the transition from PS2 to PS3 as it built an all-new engine for the first Uncharted. The new Uncharted - A Thief's End, which is due for release next year - will benefit from the team's work on Remastered.

"A lot of it was because we could try something out on our PS4 engine," Meyer said of the decision to do a PS4 version of The Last of Us. "How far can we do it? Can we do a 1080p, 60fps game? We always wanted to do that, but for the types of effects we wanted to put on screen 720p30 was just fine. Now with the push to go even further that's not fine enough. So we're trying to rise to meet that kind of challenge too."

That means next year's Uncharted 4 will also be targeting 1080p60.

"I think that's what we want to push for with anything we're doing on this generation," said Meyer. "That's sort of the mandate from when we were building the PS4 engine. Let's see if we can do this and hit it. We hit it with The Last of Us Remastered, so why not stick with this?"

As anticipation for next year's new Uncharted grows, there have been calls for older games in the series to get the same treatment The Last of Us is enjoying with Remastered - led by none less than Sony Computer Entertainment's own head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida. Is that likely?

"I personally think it would work well, because there's a lot of attention on the studio between the success of Uncharted 2, 3 and The Last of Us. It'd be nice to give players the opportunity to go back and play the older games, and people who are new to the PlayStation platform. I think that'd be great - but I have no idea how that could fall into our timeline." It's worth noting that while The Last of Us: Remastered has been in development since work on the PlayStation 3 game finished last year, it's only benefited from a dedicated team of around 30 over the past six months.

"We'll have to see," said Meyer of the possibility of an Uncharted Remastered trilogy. "You know, I'd like to see it, and Shu [Yoshida] would like to see it too."

15+ minutes of play footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow2cL-pp6p8

It's the most insane thing I have seen in years. (Also, notice how it contains the best 3D platforming ever.)

But then again it's being made by cubicle slaves and published by a soulless multinational, so I am sure it'll suck. Nothing more to see here, folks. Might as well lock the thread and go back to playing game of the century Descent II [ > ] until my eyes bleed.

Sal Romano wrote:The latest issue of Game Informer has the scoop on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

A small team began development on the PlayStation 4 sequel after development on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception ended. After The Last of Us was finished, half of its team moved over, and the rest made its way after the game’s ‘Left Behind’ add-on was completed.

Uncharted 4 is set three years after Uncharted 3. It begins with Nathan Drake and Elena living a happy life together. Until Drake’s long lost brother, Sam, who Drake thought was dead, suddenly appears. Feeling indebted to his brother, Drake gets back to treasure hunting, taking the pair to Libertalia, “a mythic Madagascar colony purportedly founded by pirates.” But you won’t spend the entire game on this island. Naughty Dog has teased snowy and urban environments, as well.

Two rival hunters, Rafe and Nadine, are introduced. Rafe is very different from Drake in morale and approach. Nadine owns a private military company in South Africa. Villains are said to play a larger role this time around.

Sam is five years older than Drake. Apparently, the lack of Sam being in Drake’s life is what’s driven him in previous games. Sam is more reckless than Drake, and jealous of him, seeing him as the ‘better-at-everything little brother.’ That said, there is a lot of rivalry between them. Expect lots of brotherly banter, as well as “some nice cooperative moments between Nate and his brother.”

Here are some additional details:

Elena and Sully are teased to appear.

Artifacts will return, and might contain notes pointing to more treasures and artifacts.

Enemies can grab your leg if you try to push them over ledges.

The A.I. system has been overhauled. Sam’s A.I. is compared to that of Ellie from The Last of Us.

Naughty Dog are trying to “explore what it’s like to be with somebody as capable of Nathan Drake.”

There are more tools outside of the rope and piton (metal spike). Naughty Dog wants to incorporate them into puzzles.

Navigational freedom is a large focus. Game Informer was shown multiple paths, one leading to an extra cave, the other bypassing a group of enemies. The demo shown to the magazine saw Drake taking a riskier climbing route that almost made him fall into the sea. While all paths have consequences, there is no “Golden Path.”

“So now our concept of a set piece is ‘what’s something impactful we can do to switch expectations and how can we have it emotionally charged?’ We want to constantly surprise the player, so it can be really intimate, or really big and bombastic.”
Cut-scenes are all in real-time.

Humor is still aplenty.

There will be multiplayer.

Naughty Dog won’t say if this will be the last Uncharted.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due out later this year for PlayStation 4. For more information, pick up the February 2015 issue of Game Informer, which is now available digitally.

edge uc4.jpg

Naughty Dog’s upcoming action-adventure, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is featured on the latest issue of EDGE magazine and we have major chunk of details regarding the gameplay, story, engine, & more from their latest issue.

Check out the details below:

-They tried to get clarification about the Amy Hennig thing but that was thrown right out the window
-Animation system from PS3 games was scrapped and rebuilt to allow full analogue movement through 360 degress using real body physics
-Slip Events (like when he used to grab on handhelds and they break or come out of place) they are not mapped to scenery like in older games but instead are dependent on the angle and distance of the jump also less stable ones will break easier if they do you need to take another route
-Drakes Piton which is similar to Lara’s Pickaxe from Tomb Raider differs from the latter because its designed to empower freedom
-The grapple points are fixed but allow Drake to swing, rappel, climb or run along and around cliff faces
-They say Uncharted’s most linear system has become freeform and instead of pushing up on the stick and following a preditermined path path your making your own. They also compared it to solving a puzzle.
-The enemies have a similar traversal set to drakes and can clamber up ledges and leap gaps in pursuit of the player.
-Breaking the line of sight by using the foliage or by other means and the enemy will not return to normal patrol patterns and instead seek you out or stay in place while staying in constant communication with each other
-The combat is a mix of stealth, traversal, melee, and gunplay which is an evolution of what they began building from UC2
-Tremendous amount of The Last of Us blueprint in UC4 in regards to the combat alternating between stealth and combat is fluid
-Learned a lesson from Jak II where they designed a level where you Daxter rides a rocket, was kind of upset about how they spent so much time on something you only seen once in the entire game. Came to appreciate adding systems that flow throughout the entire game more
-Part of ND’s evolution is getting comfortable with systematic approaches, wider layouts and the integration of Story, Gameplay, music etc.,
-Edge thinks its the prettiest game the new gen has produced
-ND is pleased with the added memory and are taking advantage of it
-Texture resolution at least quadrupled from UC3
-Drake wakes to an island shore off the coast of Madagascar waking to a backdrop of procedurally tessalated water, Dynamic wind that moves trees, bushes, Drakes hair (Head and Chest)
-Up close a system developed by ND and Sony’s Advanced Technology Group offers a more efficient way of making highly detailed surfaces without using performance adaptive tessellation while farther away the studio is relying more on background LOD algorithms more than ever before
-A physically based shader two years in the making makes materials look like their real world counterparts
-They were showed a wireframe wall with 100 handholds showing the shape of his body adapting to the shape of the wall as he climbed
-On PS3 Drake had 250 bones in his model on PS4 800 in his face alone
-They are over 30 but have locked at 30 for the demo they are gonna try to hit 60 but won’t compromise if they have to lose something that can impact the player experience
-Druckmann says the adventure has to stand on its own with hints to Drakes character in the older games for people who haven’t played if you have then you understand more of the nuances of Drake and his relationships
-UC3 ending gave them a clean slate dealt with all his present problems so that they could delve into his past
-4 years after he’s settled down and retired when he is lured back into the life by his brother sam who he last saw 15 years ago during that time they were obsessed with finding a treasure plundered by Henry Every who ammassed the largest haul over the space of two years in the 17th century its worth half a billion dollars by todays standards
-Drake moved on but Sam continued looking and came back into his bro’s life with incentive for both of them he has a new lead on Libertalia, Every’s pirate Utopia
-When they add new characters it has to reflect a facet of the protagonist in a unique way
-A brother allows them to ask who is Nathan Drake and how has he evolved into the person we see today
-Sam’s arrival makes it seem as if there is no female foil, Elena is seemingly at home and not really happy with him coming out of retirement and Chloe and Drake when their seperate ways in UC3 third act
-The only known female in the game at this point is Nadine Ross the leader of the South African -Private Military army that patrols the island she was hired by Rafe Adler, another treasure hunter in which Nate and his Bro have history with
-They’re the enemy but ND doesn’t like to think of them like that, when they are writing these characters they don’t want to write them as cliches so they they just write it as if it were from their POV because those character’s don’t necessarily see themselves as the antagonist
-They are trying to look at all moments even between cutscenes as a scene; they are thinking in filmic terms but what’s important is how much they can put on the “stick”
-Climbing mechanics overhauled
-A.I has been improved with similar traversal movies to Drake’s (they can now jump gaps, climb ledges, enemies don’t return to their preset routes they’ll seek you out)
-Edge says it feels more like a sandbox style game
-Says the ledges are too obvious
-Lots of new (small) screenshots
-Shows where the demo began. He’s passed out following a shipwreck and lost all his gear
-Druckmann says story will stand on it’s own with hints and reveals to help newcomers understand who Drake was in previous adventures
-Edge says the game is 4 years later
-ND’s engine was extremely specialized for the PS3 and they never had a PC version

In the end, EDGE goes on to call Uncharted 4 the “prettiest game” current gen has produced. What do you think?

Naughty Dog explains the delay.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has been delayed to spring 2016, with Naughty Dog explaining it needs more time with the PlayStation 4 exclusive to meet the team's standards.

Originally anticipated for the end of the year - although no firm release date was ever set - the details behind the delay were laid out by directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley on the PlayStation blog.

"After spending so many years with Nathan Drake, he means a lot to the team, and telling the climactic chapter of his adventures is a task we don't take lightly - this game deserves every bit of the attention to detail, precise pacing, and nuanced storytelling Naughty Dog is known for," the pair said in an official statement.

"So we've made the difficult choice of pushing the game's release date. Giving us a few extra months will make certain that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End not only meets the team's high standards but the high standards that gamers have come to expect from a Naughty Dog title.

"Thank you for your patience," the statement concludes. "We know the extra wait will be excruciating, but you'll see it will be worth it as we reveal more about Uncharted 4 over the next year. The team at Naughty Dog will be heads down working through 2015 making sure that Nathan Drake's story gets the closure it deserves. Come Spring 2016, you and Nate are in for one thrilling, emotional ride."

First announced in 2013, the world got its first look at Uncharted 4: A Thief's End last December, with Digital Foundry providing some analysis of the footage soon after.

Leon Hurley wrote:For reasons best known to Sony, the best thing at E3 was the longer version of its E3 Uncharted 4 demo that it didn't show at the conference. Behind closed doors, an extended version of the truck chase continued the sequence and raised the bar so high it might well break all other games.

What happens is impossible to describe without falling into hyperbole because holy Christ I nearly lost my shit, with gameplay that almost seemed to be mocking your ability to deal with it - piling sequence onto sequence, and building the pace and action up to to a level that's almost impossible to comprehend without seeing it. Nothing else out there can compete with what I saw: there's honestly a world before that demo and world after.

In the original Sony press conference demo, Nate and Sully shot their way through a market, escaping bad guys and a gun-carrying APC truck in a smashy downhill drive. In the short version, Drake lassos an overhanging crane arm and swings alongside a bridge as it smashes him into obstacles. Fade to black, crowd goes wild.

The extended demo continues this sequence, only with the swinging changing to dragging as Nate's pulled up onto a muddy road. There's what I can only describe as the best mud physics I've ever seen here, as Nate slops and slides along the ground behind the truck. Nathan's forced to take chaotic pot shots at gunmen in pursuing jeeps while he desperately tries to climb the rope and claim the truck.

From there, via a shootout on the back of the truck, Drake manages to jump to another jeep as he tries to catch up with his brother Sam's motorbike - the reason for the chase in the first place. Throughout all this, the speed and scale is huge. There's no sense of being on a single straight road with prop trees whizzing past; this is all taking place in a huge open environment. Vehicles careen and rattle between routes and obstacles, or go pinwheeling through the air in sheets of flame once the tires have been shot out. It's fast, loud and cinematically overwhelming.

And it's not even the best part. After fighting some goons who're trying Nate's jeep-hopping tricks to get from their ride to his, Drake catches up with his brother and jumps on the bike. From here, it just goes crazy. The camera switches to a front view as the pursuing APCs give chase, smashing through obstacles and skidding back and forth on their heels.

What's impossible to understand until you see it is just how kinetic and animated it all is. It's not a static rolling road creating a background for a shooting gallery. It's a twisting, turning, full-on car chase. Sam throws the bike around, leaning into skids or throwing a leg out for sharp turns. The view swings around the action and the bouncing bike as Nate peppers the pursuing vehicle's grill with bullets. Beautiful depth-of-field effects and camera angles create an incredible sense of velocity as the carnage unfolds.

It ends with the pair sliding the bike under a container as the APC explodes behind them. It's ridiculous and joyously over-the-top in a way that even the game seems to acknowledge, with Drake and Sam bursting into grins at the end like school kids that have just had the best fun ever.

It's definitely a return to Uncharted 2's sense of scale and action, recreating the thrill of that game's helicopter chase. But on a level so far above that, and what other games have achieved, that it's a literal game changer (I said there'd be hyperbole). The scale, speed, and sheer ambition of the sequence genuinely has the potential to redefine what's possible, drawing a line in this generation's games and not so much raising the bar as firing it into orbit.

Just finished Uncharted 4 and whilst it’s good, it’s certainly no Uncharted 2 or even on par with Uncharted 3. The slow pace and more serious tone coupled with the sparse level design drags the game down. The combat is more open-ended with greater stealth emphasis but ultimately the scenarios are not as well executed or memorable. Also the music is worse. Overall three stars.
