Dark Souls III first details, screenshots leaked

YouTube channel The Know reportedly has first details on Dark Souls III, rumored to be announced at E3 in Los Angeles this month.

Here are the details:

- The game is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. PC is also listed, but is accompanied by the word “negotiable.”
- The game will support “1-4 players,” meaning it’s possible you can summon more than one friend or there might be a player-versus-player element.
- 10 playable classes, all available from the beginning of the game.
- 45 new enemies, 15 new bosses. Characters and monsters from previous games are not included in that count.
- 100 new weapons and 40 new armor sets with returning equipment not counted in that number.
- 60 minutes of cutscenes, mostly in engine, rather than pre-rendered.
- There will be around 12 areas in the game.
- Will change the way you interact with players online. You’ll now participate in “Sacrifice Ceremonies.” You can drag bodies around, choose where to sacrifice them, perform the ritual, and visit another player’s game. Doing this makes you a target for other players. These will also change your game, such as a sacrifice creating a bonfire at the location you choose to sacrifice the body.
- Light sources and enemy layouts have been changed.
- Boss battles have a new “Heat Up” factor that “completely change” boss battles based on undescribed factors.
- The game will add “Sword Fighting Arts,” which including “Rush In” and “Circle.” The former is a sacrifice attack that allows you to dive into an opponent and take damage while delivering a huge hit, while the latter sounds like a dodge move.

Following previous rumors suggesting the still unannounced Dark Souls 3 would release in 2016, IGN has obtained a Dark Souls 3 promotional image for E3 narrowing the release window.

The unreleased, official art below displays an armored hero covered tattered cloth and flames, as well as the suggested launch frame of "Early 2016."

This follows an earlier rumor that Dark Souls 3 would appear at E3, the video game industry trade show happening June 16-18, 2015, and later launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. When contacted for additional information, publisher Bandai Namco declined to comment.

Insomnia review: http://culture.vg/reviews/in-depth/dark ... 16-pc.html

And a fairly similar review by someone whose taste I generally trust:

From's excuse to pit you against dozens of fat knights of all shapes and sizes (provided the only shapes available are fat) is back for a third serving.

My verdict on Dark Souls 3 is that it's inoffensive. It's basically boilerplate Souls. This feels like a yearly franchise formula game, loaded down with so much fan service references to Dark Souls 1 that it barely stands on its own. The game looks lovely but it's all just a bunch of ruined castles except for the village and library that feel taken from Bloodborne. The game is still the thematically goofy medieval fantasy pastiche we all know and love.

There's no level that's unplayably bad so Dark Souls 3 has Dark Souls 1 whipped thoroughly in that regard, and the level design is generally smarter than Souls 1's slapdash lazy design, but there's nothing especially good here. Just... BIG levels with three or four paths. Big for the sake of feeling big more than anything else.

The combat is an awkward mix of Bloodborne and Dark Souls, where the enemies are faster and you really aren't. Casters just don't stand a chance unless you reach the endgame just because the enemies hate you keeping a distance.

Worse still, poise is gone completely from the battle system. There is no way to tank a hit, every single enemy attack staggers you except for during rare heavy attacks where you have hyper armor. This drastically changes the pace of the combat where midgets waving their toothpicks around can easily stunlock you to death. This was always a Souls problem, but here, every single hit stops you cold and it is a net negative to the actual combat. It doesn't break it, but the game is worse for this decision.

The bosses average out to be pretty decent though.

All that aside, even an average Souls game is worth a shot, and there is nothing bad here (Well, the story is pretty awful, even by Souls game standards.), certainly not enough to turn you folks away from it. It's certainly more playable than Dark Souls 1, but not quite as good as Dark Souls 2. The only flaw is just that it's not all that interesting.

PvP is, as always, a cheesy imbalanced mess, but that's not changed a lick since Demon Souls.
