Survival MMO by Amazon Game Studios.

https://www.newworld.com/

Amazon wrote:Carve your destiny alongside hundreds of other players in a savage and arcane 17th century world. Survive murderous player bandits, band together to build fortified strongholds, or strike out to claim a piece of the haunted frontier.

"The land area, and again we have to test and make sure we're right, but the land area is designed for 10,000. That's a lot. That's off in the future. We're going to start at 500, which is already big, and we're just gonna grow it from there."

Couldn't seem to find a release date for it, so I put it up as TBA in the release schedule with this image:

This is certainly my number 1 most wanted game right now. It's basically a Life is Feudal: MMO with a big budget: a dream come true. And check out leaked alpha footage (the YouTuber says it's beta but he's full of shit): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esq00I00610

Look at how wonderful and alive the map is at 8:06. How smooth the movement and combat—which was LiF's biggest issue. They've got goddamn fighting game devs working on that shit (from your PC Gamer link):

Samuel Roberts wrote:Even though Amazon Game Studios Orange County used to be known as Double Helix, this exact team is something of a new creation. "Our executive producer Rich Lawrence spent 15 years making MMOs, and then we have combat specialists who made the combat in [games] like Killer Instinct and Breakaway, and then our world designers come from [games like] BioShock, and are focused on putting narrative into the world while they're designing this space. This is this team, as a unified team, their very first game, so we tried to assemble a bunch of people who were heavy hitters for their specific craft."

It's awesome that they are putting narrative in, like LiF has some. And the New World is a terrific setting for it that has been screaming for this type of game since Dan Bunten's 1984 masterpiece, The Seven Cities of Gold. It's just such a natural setting for a game revolving around crafting and construction, and then you have the various indigenous tribes playing the part of Civ's barbarians, etc. (because remember: this genre is first-person Civ), and a whole unspoilt continent to explore and fight over, and countless works of fictions to draw upon for narrative and atmospheric inspiration.

And then with Amazon's server know-how we'll get solid servers worldwide, and enough money to keep the game going for some time while it acquires a playerbase, and enough resources to quickly fix issues and respond to problems that are bound to come up with such a complex, cutting-edge, untried genre that the homebrew LiF developer in some Russian steppe or whatever simply wasn't capable of dealing with. LiF was a big success out the door, but something went wrong when their servers got flooded with players early this year on Steam release, and I wasn't there to figure out exactly what. Evidently some economy/balance issue that will of course be the number 1 problem to solve when you are trying to essentially make a Rust with no wipes. Facepunch is trying to gradually work up to persistence, but LiF and this game are trying the top-down approach, so we'll see who succeeds first. Currently, my money is on Amazon, and I'll jump into this the moment the beta rolls around.

On a side note, I find it encouraging that the company of the richest man in the world is working on the best multiplayer genre in the world. It's no accident that man became so rich!

The UI by the way has HUGE LiF influences. I feel like I am looking at a LiF screen when I look at it. The devs don't talk about their immediate inspirations, for obvious or at least semi-obvious business and PR reasons, and that's where you need the critics to tell you what's really going on—and of course the PC Gamer dude hasn't so much as heard of LiF, or Rust for that matter, let alone played them and be able to make comparisons.

Meanwhile, I can tell you that their starting number of players at 500 is Rust's maximum, while their ultimate goal of 10,000 is LiF's exact number. These dudes have done their homework, and have the right games in their sights, and I can't wait to see what comes of it. Insomnia's number 1 most wanted game right here. I should make some kind of award image to distinguish it on the frontpage.

New media look cool, but unfortunately, it looks like the game's being nerfed: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1063730/ ... 551129357/

"But again, wars and open-world PvP are optional. You can flag yourself up for it and opt in, or, "If you don't care about this stuff as a player, you can have a huge, massive experience without any of it." - https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019 ... sociations

New World was built on being a PVP-focused game. The mechanics of the game were built around PVP, and the world was built around PVP. Making PVP an opt-in system completely defeats the purpose of New World, and will lead to it being dead a month after release.

I understand the financial incentive to try to widen your game's appeal, but the people AGS is trying to appeal to now won't stick with the game even if they can turn PVP off for themselves. Why would they? There are endless PVE-focused games on the market with meaningless PVP aspects (which is what New World will be if PVP is opt-in) already, it's just those games have a lot more content to chew through than New World will.

AGS, please reconsider the decision to make PVP an opt-in system... or at least create separate PVE / PVP servers. You're alienating your core audience with this decision, guaranteeing nobody will stick around long-term.

For the ignorant people who will inevitably comment without knowing the history of this game, it was always full-loot open world PVP up until this announcement. The game is designed around it, and they've just suddenly changed at the last minute to make more sales. But what they haven't realized is that doing so will make most of their game meaningless.

Souren Araya wrote:Except this is actually a big deal. New World was designed around territory ownership and conflict, a never ending war to own the most territory (or the most valuable territories for resources). This aspect of the game is meaningless if someone can just choose not to engage in it and turn PVP off for themselves, because now they can go farm the rare resources on YOUR LAND without consequences.

This change also removes any risk of travelling the world, farming, etc because you know you'll never get attacked by another player, and you never risk losing your items.

Inevitably, this will lead to everyone farming up to the best gear in a few weeks or months, getting bored of the game because PVE was never this game's focus to begin with, and then leaving because nobody with half a brain will turn on PVP unless they're attacking another territory (which would be pointless to do because they can farm their resources anyways).

They've literally killed their own game before release, to (saying this as respectfully as possible) appeal to players like yourself who will be ultra-casuals and stop playing after a month or two anyways. There won't be a consistent audience.

Shoulda tried it in the alpha when I had a chance to experience it in its full PVP glory... I got an invitation towards the end, but I was busy with stuff and passed it up thinking that the full release with a big group would be better...

Anyway, there's still hope it won't be a total fuckup. Let's hope then.

In related news, Amazon seems to really suck in game publishing. They've outright cancelled most of their announced titles, others get endless delays, and this one, the star of their lineup, is getting nerfed. All that money, and no sense in how to use it.

I Think Amazon's NEW WORLD MMO Has Got The Magic! (Mage System Analysis, Hidden Details) (1080p)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33K_oJixkn0

An in-depth analysis of whether the game will actually have any magic (it was not supposed to according to early reports and announcements). But I mostly watched the video for the varied footage of the game. It has without a doubt the highest production values and best combat in the domination genre, and also the best PVE. The question, given what I quoted earlier in the thread, is whether the PVP will be up to snuff, because if not then it's not a domination game but more like theme-park MMO with crafting/building. Which might still be decent fun, but it won't be a Rust- or LiF-killer.

FYI this was supposed to be FP4X, and it played as such with full loot PVP in early alphas until they realized these games aren’t popular and nerfed it to more standard MMO mechanics. There’s still building and apparently also territory claim, but you can’t just kill people and take their shit. I am not sure how that works, it sounds impossible—I mean territory capture without full loot PVP—so I’d be interested to find out. But the fact everyone’s talking about “reaching level 40” or whatever and getting burned out tells me that this is no longer FP4X. That’s not how these games work, you haven’t “seen everything” if you “reach level 40” in a FP4X, and you practically never get burned out on them if they are good games.

From all reports this was a very good FP4X in its early iterations—we even had a couple CULT players iirc try it and report that it’s indeed great—so this is a tragedy what they did to this game. Fucking Amazon made ONE good game and they still managed to destroy it before launch.

Nevertheless the game is getting lots of hype before final release despite the nerfing—or because of it? I would really like to check it out, and with this refund scam it’s apparently free now. It releases August 31, so we have some time to try it out later in the month once we cool off on Starbase.

For what it’s worth, and I know it’s worth less than nothing, the journalists are hyping it as “the next big thing”.

There's a real buzz about Amazon's New World MMO
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021 ... -world-mmo

Can it really be the next big thing?

A queue? I haven't queued to play an MMO since World of Warcraft in 2005. But earlier this week I had to wait half-an-hour to get into Amazon's New World closed beta because more than 300 people were ahead of me at 3pm. I know it's the school summer holiday but still. And that was just one European server - there are many.

There are queues every Thursday to get into 400-player Rust servers, but this retard hasn’t heard of one of Steam’s top 10 most popular games.

Don’t forget also that currently it’s frying GPUs.

Amazon's GPU-killing New World is trying to spin fans at 200,000 RPM

I'm level 17 and about 16 hours in so far. Unfortunately I found out that I made my character on a different world than my friends, though we're in the same world set, and the option to transfer worlds isn't in the game just yet so I just did some more questing on my own until the option is in. The PVE is definitely better than standard MMO fare, you actually have to dodge and block. It's been fun ranking up the different weapons and figuring out how they work. My favorite right now is the hatchet which has a Berserk ability and also ranged throws. There's no classes in the game, instead your fighting abilities are based on the weapons you use. Your armor also gives stat increases.

There are three factions in the game vying for control of the world map. I'm with the Marauders. If your faction has control of a region you get bonuses while in that region, like increased XP gain, harvesting speed and even fast travel cost. You can complete faction missions to increase your ranking within that faction and buy stuff with currency you earn from doing those missions in the faction's store to buy weapons and armor. There are PVP missions that require you to turn your PVP flag on, so I've done some of that to see if I can get into some fights. Most of them were pretty quick, with me being dead lol. You can also agree to duel players and I've been in a few of those as well, and they're pretty fun. There are scheduled wars to defend or attack fortifications across the map. There's one happening today Monday at 8pm EST that I'm going to try to participate in. You sign up for these at whatever town the event is happening and wait to receive an invite. We'll see how that goes. As for regular PVP in the world map, most players don't have their PVP flag turned on so you can't attack them. I keep mine on all the time because you actually get 10% extra XP.

Combat is actually pretty good, there's lots of combos you can come up with using the various skills you can unlock for the different weapon types, and damage for those weapons scales off of different stats. Respec is free until level 20 so I'm taking advantage and experimenting with all kinds of builds and weapons. I just wish the PVP was always turned on for everyone, feels weird running into a Covenant when I'm a Marauder and we're supposed to be enemies and the dude helps me kill a mob and heals me lol. This definitely doesn't feel like Atlas or Rust at all since you aren't building your own bases but holding already established fortifications, but as far as MMORPGs it's not too bad. It's definitely very pretty and I like the music. I'll keep playing for now since my friends seem to like it and I want to do some mass PVP. Hopefully the world transfer is added soon so I can group with my friends.

Wow, no building. Earlier versions had extensive building. Like you made entire fortresses. It never occurred to me they would dumb it down this much. It’s an entire new genre now.
