New ArcSys fighter. These guys are a factory, and given the level of quality of all these games I am not complaining. They are the Cave of fighting games at this point.

It looks really, really cool. Can't wait to play it with y'all.

Very long discussion in the article's comments. Here's one comment that caught my eye: https://www.gematsu.com/2020/12/arc-sys ... 5204847379

Like Special to Special canceling seems to be teased a bit which LAAWD YES. And 8ting has some involvement with the title (They made UMVC3). I do like the character designs as well. Can't wait to see more.

Day 1.

Note that they call it “play video” because they are directly translating from Japanese and they don’t have the stupid “geaplay” word.

The belt-scroller the game is based on has a LOT of characters: https://www.dfoneople.com/gameinfo/character/all

That page shows 16, but if you click on each one you get several sub-classes. On the other hand, the original 16 is really only 11 because the rest are female variations.

I haven't done the math, but the total number of possible characters could be well over 30. That page says over 60, but I am not sure if that includes the female variations too.

Released today.

Skama wrote:TLDR: Slow. That's all I can say. Wins are painfully slow because the fight just feels like it drags on forever, losses are slow because you just watch a combo go on for 20-30 seconds, neutral is boringly slow because of the existence of a block button + crossups and left-right mixups do not exist in this game.

Look, I'm not going to pretend to be a genius at game balance or anything, because I'm not and 99.9% of the people reviewing this game also arent... but there is a CLEAR difference in how fun a game feels to play, and this game feels awful. I spent most of my time in multiplayer (because single player content is non-existent, more on that later) and had exactly 50% winrate, so I'm not just reviewing over a salty lose.

Almost everyone is slow, some characters have pressure that's so unbelievably easy to pull off that you can learn their 10+ move combos in 30 seconds, and the single player content is so lacking that I'm not sure why it was added at all. If you played Melty Blood: Type Lumina and thought that game had no single player stuff... this game ACTUALLY managed to deliver even less.

Pros:

Visually: Great. Looks awesome to see my character do cool super moves and intros/outros.

Music: Pretty good. Not something I'd listen to even when not playing like Guilty Gear music, but it's good fighting game music.

Accessibility: probably the easiest fighter to learn. All special moves can be done "Smash-style", meaning instead of quarter circle forward + button, you can do direction + button at the cost of waiting longer to regenerate Mana Points aka MP, which you use for special attacks.

Netcode: From what I played, it was actually good. Lag shouldn't be an issue for this game.

Cons:

Arcade mode: fight a few CPUs. 'Grats on winning. No "Great job" or cut to credits or whatever, it's literally just 8 random fights against CPUs LMAO

Story mode: "Man, you sure are cool. Also those people have seeds to open the door to other worlds. Wanna fight them for literally no reason even if you're both willing to cooperate? Cool!" Yes, that is legit the whole story. It can be finished in 10 minutes if you skip dialogue, 30ish if you don't.

Combo trials: Believe it or not, they messed this up too. Don't get me wrong, some of the combos are fun, but if you want to do combos the "correct" way, meaning you use motion inputs instead of just direction + button, you need to check the command list, because the game ONLY tells you the easy inputs and there's no option to just change how it displays. Not the biggest deal... but how do you mess this up?

As the TLDR said, it's barren and slow. I own probably 20+ fighters and I'm trying to refund this day 1. Take that for what you will.

This game is a 3/5 for a few reasons.

This game is very much geared towards competitive players or DFO fans. I do like having a set of 8 chapters of Story per character and how they add a glossary when highlighted names come up. The art style is good, the hits feel like they actually have a fair bit of weight to them. Music is ok at best.

Combos feel clunky. Which is really unfortunate because there are combo routes that my brain says "this should work" but it doesn't specifally because I'm 3 frames off on the animation which is the most annoying thing. Also zoning characters dominate the scene at launch. I was hoping zoners would play more like Granblue where it's more setup heavy and not like Injustice 2 where I can just turtle in a corner, spam projectile and win.

The Boss Fight was something else for that exact reason. I chose Grappler because I wanted to expand my character type horizon a bit and Grappler is just... Awful to play. I struggled with him on the boss but thought "Ah that's just AI being AI" only to find out that Grappler gets his teeth kicked in by Dragon Knight for the Injustice 2 level zoning.

Online? Well on the bright side Roll Back Netcode is nice. I played with someone in Korea and the Rollback held the match together really good.

Do I recommend this? Yea, a fair bit. Will I play this in any competitive level? I mean probably not, I'm liking Granblue much more in comparison. I don't *not* recommend it. It's serviceable and I know players will enjoy it.

I'm just struggling to have fun I guess.

3/5 sounds fair for it considering GBVS was 4/5. I was hoping for another 4/5 here, but it seems it's not the case. Maybe they can improve it over time? I am still interested in it in either case.

Lots of positive reviews, and the overall rating is positive, but they are all brief, offering no detail, which tells me the guys who see the game positively are stupid. Here's one example: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/765 ... ed/1216060

Kazyek wrote:An Arksys fighting game, but with a proper online ranked mode ?!?
What more could you want? This is IMHO the only fully proper online experience made by Arksys ever; good rollback netcode AND proper ranked matchmaking.

That alone make this game a far better game than GG -Strive-, DBFZ and other Arksys games.

On top of that, cute chibi lobby are back instead of the ugly Strive ones (but not forced on you if you just want to use matchmaking!), game aesthetic and music is top-notch as always, and the cast is amazing. This is one of these rare games where I litterally want to play ALL the characters.

Excellent game, best fighting game currently available IMHO

I am not saying that what he's saying is false, all I am saying is that he seems to focus on one aspect and forget about all the rest, which are even the more important ones: typical of low-IQ reviewers. There's not a single in-depth positive review on Steam, which is a massive red flag.

I might buy the game soon. I'll also be looking for more reviews; it's just day 1 after all.

LambChop wrote:After 5 hours with the game, half of that time being online matches and half being story/training mode, I have to say this game has a lot of potential to be great, it has great characters with lots of personality, and I find that there's a lot to like here... but missing 1 key gameplay feature that makes playing it against other players frustratingly challenging.

To be brief: There is a lack of universal defensive options to stop incoming pressure. What I wouldn't give for this game to let me pay all of my magic points to simply push block and get me out of the unending pressure every single character can do. Or literally any defensive option, burst, delayed wakeup, push block, SOMETHING. Conversion doesn't save you, it just forces you to eat all of the white damage from the pressure in return for, what, a few frames? I won't complain much more about this, but just know that in the game's current state as of 7/13/2022 most matches will end almost as soon as they begin, and you will spend a lot of time either blocking and going on a ride until you lose, or putting the pressure on an otherwise defenseless opponent until you mercilessly win.

There's another "problem" with the game, many people are saying that the characters all feel generally the same and play in exactly the same way, but I have to disagree. They all have unique strategies and quirks. I believe the true reason for this relates to the above problem: a lack of defensive options. Every character's main goal is to put the opponent into a never-ending string of pressure sequences that never allow them a chance to react or respond. Once you have them where you want them you simply play your game until it's over. You maybe jockey for a little bit at the beginning of the round, but once one player has found an advantage the round is generally over already. Without a chance for characters to break out they don't get a chance to do anything other then pressure or be pressured. If there were more defensive options and less setplay options then the characters would blossom into what they were intended to be.

This game has a lot of charm and potential. It looks gorgeous, it's very simple to get started but hard to master, and the characters are interesting. But without defensive choices to make--or any choice beyond pressure or be pressured, it's just not worth the time to invest into too heavily. I see you eyeing this game and I see you wanting to play it, but this one isn't finished cooking yet. Until it's done, Guilty Gear Strive is just down the hall, you can't miss it.

Keep in mind that his criticism is precisely the kind of thing bad players say who lack the patience and intelligence to learn how the game works and find ways out of tough situations.

That said, he writes and analyzes well, so that's definitely a green flag that he knows what he's talking about.

Also, this guy says exactly the same things, but more succinctly, and with 21 hours, not just 5: https://steamcommunity.com/id/thoraxiun ... ed/1216060

ThorAxiun wrote:Gave the game a fair shot and eventually realized I hate it. No neutral, virtually no mixups, lacking defensive options, input buffers feel off, too many reversal DP's, weak soundtrack, and stupid comeback mechanics (I got a berserker down to 25% health, and he then killed me in a single combo while I was at full health because of his awakening/super)

Unfortunately it's too late to refund it. Play Guilty Gear Strive instead.

Sounds like an Insomnia 3/5. I am probably buying it.

CULT LIVE: DNF Duel

DNF Duel (Normal + Expert Arcade) with icycalm

Played an hour and a half of this. It's the standard ArcSys licensed B-game; maybe even C-game, if you count GBVS as a B. It's ALMOST as fun as GBVS, but not quite. The characters are not quite as interesting, the moves and effects not quite as stunning, the levels and backgrounds not quite as elaborate and beautiful, the music not quite as inspired and varied.

That said, it's still a beautiful and fun game, and I'll put a couple dozen hours in it at least, before moving back to GBVS, then 2019 Samurai Spirits, and finally I think I'll settle on Strive for a while.

In short, the rough order of rank is DNF<GBVS<2019SS=Strive(?)

I am not sure about the last part of the equation, ergo the question mark.

P.S. The arcade mode difficulties are out of whack in this game. Normal is way too easy, and Expert is way too difficult. So I think I'll keep bouncing between the two as the mood strikes me.
