PC Kenshi 2

I heard about this from Archonus mentioning it in the Deals & Discounts (Games) thread [ > ] so I went to take a look and I have to say it doesn't sound very promising, at least from the perspective of an outsider who hasn't played the original.

Now, our original plan was to keep the new project quiet so we could work on it without public pressure and then do a big press release when we had something to show. However it seems lots of people are getting confused or angry about us not still tinkering with Kenshi or leaving the world of Kenshi behind, so I'm going to go ahead and announce early what we are working on now, as I think it will put most people at ease.

We are starting work now on Kenshi 2!

  • It will be set 1000 years in the past, during the time of the "Old Empire" and reveal more of the world's lore and history.
  • It will be based on the same code-base and engine.
  • The engine will be upgraded to the latest version of Ogre, which should drastically improve performance.
  • Why keep the same engine? Because a completely new engine would break everything and take another million years to finish. By sticking with the same code we are making the descision to prioritise gameplay instead of graphics. (Not to mention a much faster release date)
  • The work we do on the engine upgrade will also be applied to Kenshi 1 as a free update.
  • Other core improvements or small features achieved in Kenshi 2 could also potentially be applied to Kenshi 1 as free updates.

That was two years ago. This is a newer article:

Kenshi 2 – Development News and Release Date

It says that they are switching to Unreal Engine, and that there probably won't be any multiplayer here either.

Terrain seems improved:

Furniture system seems detailed:

Building model seems very natural-looking a la LiF:

And a creature animation video:

That's very good animation for the genre. I am not sure how it compares to the original game as I haven't played it.

You can find more videos on Lo-Fi's YT channel, but there isn't much more there yet: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzCkna ... CyfYukkxPg

And Insomnia's 5/5 review of the original is here: https://culture.vg/reviews/in-depth/kenshi-2013-pc.html

Probably the reason I am not excited is because I haven't played the original, and this seems like more of the same to me. Someone who's played it should be able to discern the improvements, and if he wants more, he should be excited. That said, the game just doesn't seem to have enough new stuff yet to qualify as a full sequel. Multiplayer for example is the absolute minimum I would expect for a sequel to a singleplayer game in the genre.

It may yet be included, and the article I linked talks about it being added via mods perhaps.
