Rusty Planetary Civilization is upon us, even if it doesn't look so good. It's still a milestone in game design, and you can try it out soon (only in singleplayer unfortunately).

It might get deleted so I am saving it here for posterity.

There's not much chance of an improvement since even the game's logo is ugly. The programmer/director simply has shit for visual taste, and unless someone takes over from him, nothing will change in the aesthetics department.

Multiplayer is coming! From the Steam page:

Majic Jungle wrote:Sapiens has been built with multiplayer in mind, but it needs more work and lots of community testing and feedback before it will be ready. So multiplayer will come after the early access launch. Full controller support and VR support are also planned to be completed for the full release.

VR even!

Though buddy unless you swap out many of these crappy assets, people will be vomiting in their headsets from the ugliness in VR. You're better off making a Game Boy Advance port than VR if you plan to keep these assets.

I like what I am hearing about the coming updates.

Majic Jungle wrote:The full version will also add more later game content, as well as the addition of new mechanics, refinement of the existing experience, and progressing further into future technologies. You can expect to see the addition of boats, fishing, horseback riding and the transport of goods. More interactions with other tribes will be added, with the ability to trade or steal, recruit or fight. Also, expect to move further into the medieval era and beyond with the crafting of metal tools, and more advanced farming and refining processes.

This is the kind of game you need to support with your wallet asap, if you love the concept. No one's coming to help this guy: not megacorporations like Amplitude which are still just copy-pasting decades-old designs, and even FAILING at it lol. This is day 1 purchase for me, and I don't care if it turns out crap. You have to support the stuff you want to see made, and I want nothing more than Rusty Planetary Civilization.

Majic Jungle wrote:As a reminder, the base price is $24.99 and there will be a 10% launch discount. The OST is already available, with all the proceeds going to the wonderful John Konsolakis for his tireless work on the music for the game.

The game will go live on Steam tomorrow, July 26 at 12pm PDT / 3pm EDT / 9pm CEST / 7am NZST.

The composer sounds Greek af.

Edit: Yep: https://johnkonsolakis.eu

John Konsolakis was born in Athens, Greece in 1999 and has composed music for film, documentaries, theatrical plays, video games, as well as a number of concert works. He has also been the winner of 3 International Composition Competitions, the most recent one being the Oticons Faculty Int’l Film Scoring Competition.

It is... interesting.

This is now out, and apparently selling well considering what it is (I saw it briefly at #2, and now it's about #5 in the Steam bestsellers, at least in my region).

Sapiens is out now!

I briefly thought about giving it a try, but the screenshots are just so unappetizing. I don't feel like building anything that's on the menu. Rather I feel like playing Rust, whenever I think about playing this. The programmer should have given us some cool stuff to build right off the bat, and even the terrain seems uninspired and doesn't make me want to explore it at all.

So I think I'll pass on the game at least until MP and multi-tribe combat go in. At that point, it might be worth checking it out. Also, it's reportedly very moddable, so perhaps he'll attract a group of modders to flesh things out for us. And since dedicated server support is coming, it's not out of the realm of possibility that we could set up a nice little war between us at some point, running on a heavily modded version of the game.

But all this is months down the line at the earliest; possibly years. Or the project could very well just crater and vanish. We'll just have to keep an eye on it.

Until then I MAY just jump in for an hour or two to check things out if I get THAT bored with my life at some point.

SIRMADSENtv wrote:This is one of those titles I would like to give something in between thumbs up/down. It is extremely time consuming and tedious. Everything has to be discovered or learnt before you can make it, that's fine. The problem becomes when not a single person does anything on their own. You have to specifically go and add jobs to people or they won't do anything, it goes on from there because they won't even do things in between what is necessary, for example:

You need to make a wooden wall - You have to set workers to jobs like woodcutting, carving, builder etc. One villager can have several jobs but they don't automatically do the jobs leading up to the actual wall building process, you have to go through every single step in between, manually.

Sure they do small things like collecting nearby small rocks etc but, after 2 and a half hours the only accomplishment that has been done is to build a crappy thatch building and knowing that building will only get worse from there.

I understand the concept, that it is supposed to be somewhat near what it would have been at that time. Which is why I would like a rating in between. It’s well thought through and the mechanics are there but it is just overall too slow which results in way too much down time where you do nothing but wait.

Vadim Cool wrote:This game has indeed some potential. But the only reason it's getting a negative review is because it sure as hell ain't worth the price tag of $21. So basically it's competing in a way with games like Going Medieval which goes for $23 price tag. And there we can also build below the ground and have battles from time to time. This game has? No underground, no battles.

It has a huge world and really nice music. But that's about it, whether you choose to buy this game or some other game won't make much difference, because they are almost the same, but with less content here. If we want to change location in other games, we can just start a new game. The results are the same. Structures look a bit different, the world looks a bit different, but the concept is practically the same or less than for example in Going Medieval game.

So we build a huge and almost empty building. Then what? There isn't even much survival elements to games like these. So the game is not bad, it just feels empty. Where's the excitement??? I sure don't feel it.

Even in the game Medieval Dynasty you can have more excitement, because there you have actual survival elements on a higher level and wild animals may attack you. And it looks much better than this game and is constantly being worked on and improved. And this game is 2/3rd of the price tag of the Medieval Dynasty. Really?

Maybe it would be better to lower the price and attract more potential buyers instead? Just a thought there. You can try and sell a game for $100 to 10 people or for $10 to a 1000 people. Do the math.

This game has some nice music and the load time is very impressive. In less than 10sec after launching the game, you are already in the game and building things. But that came at a cost of low resolution graphics I suppose. So maybe there is not too much to brag about there.

Anchelie wrote:It feels like Going Medieval game, but its budget version. I got lured by positive comments, 7 years of development note and the 'progressing through times' description. At the moment there isn't many unlockables - from what I see, you can build with thatch, wood and then stone- and there, that's the idea of advancing through times. Most of the time, you will just press on things your people have to do, like gather, or build, or investigate. Then you will spend 10 min waiting and watching the screen. It feels a bit slow and repetetive. Gather, build, gather, build. Wait for another thing to investigate. Saying all that, this game has potential and I look forward to the next updates, but for now it feels very raw.
