The Pettiness Of Game Reviewers

Originally published on the now-defunct Reaxxion by Insomnia member and sometime contributor Christian "Turnus" Selbrede under a pseudonym, and then later on his own site with the title "Not Without Honor": http://victorygamecenter.com/not-without-honor/

I chose the original title on the one hand because I don't see the meaning of the new one, and on the other hand so as to avoid non-subscribers thinking that someone here wrote an article on For Honor. But the main reason is that the new title doesn't make sense to me, and therefore sounds at least a little pretentious. With the original title, meanwhile, you know exactly what you are getting, when you click on the link.

christian wrote:I wrote this. When Reaxxion first launched, they were hungry for articles, and I saw an opportunity here to reach a wider audience with my writing. The quality of the typical Reaxxion article was, however, quite poor. Not to mention Reaxxion had strong links to GamerGate and the manosphere scene, both of which I wanted nothing to do with. So I used a pseudonym to disassociate myself from them when I submitted the article.

But as I continued to write, I realized that there was no way I could continue publishing on Reaxxion. The content of my articles deeply conflicted with the objective of their site, which was to create a "safe place" for themselves, and so I started to look elsewhere for a publisher. But as I looked into the matter further, I soon discovered that there were no suitable places for me to publish my work. And so, I created Victory Game Center.

He "disassociated" himself from them by... submitting an article to them.

On top of that, he is a religious nut. Like chanting 24/7 nut -- he should be in an institution. But as you can see from this article, and some of the others on his site, he has cool things to say now and then, especially when he can keep his chanting to himself, so I will be featuring more stuff from his site, with permission. (The Until Dawn review was his, for example.)

I had posted this in another thread, but it's more appropriate here so I deleted it there and am reposting it here.

Patrick Klepek wrote:Much like Mass Effect's own Reapers, there's an observable cycle to how this tends to play out—a snowballing effect. When one person finds a glitch or quirk, people look for others, and as those get shared more widely, it creates the perception that it's all anyone is talking about. Most likely, it's a combination of factors that came together at once, fueled by the class clown nature of social media, in which the thirst for retweets fuels people to try and one up one another. If someone else can get thousands of shares by uploading a GIF that shows the game in a bad light, maybe you can add cheeky music to it and get even more attention.
