The topic of breadth and depth in Why You Should Play More Games sounds like it applies to philosophy as well.
A philosopher has to have breadth and depth in the different subjects they know about, too much breadth at the expense of depth and he's a dilletante, too much depth at the expense of breadth and he is a scientist or even intellectual specialties like a sniper or a chef.

In life we need specialists
In games, no one needs an aspie with 4,000 hours in Dota

CULT|James W.
Are some specialists useful like recap?

CULT|icycalm
Recap plays a ton of games (edited)
My essay says play more games
Obviously there's only one icycalm who plays and understands everything, and that's why he wrote the article
But many people can benefit from my mindset to some degree or other
Of course we will have specialists in various genres, and even in various games
But playing Donkey Kong your whole life is not being a specialist, it is being brain damaged

CULT|James W.
of course

Also, trying to spread your butter too much when you have little butter is a bad idea
These are the people who want to have breadth, when they suck at everything
They want to be renaissance men when they are not even men
In those cases, it's best to focus on a couple of genres, instead of trying to be me, and ending up a clown
The "Learn to Counter" moron is an example
But even those people have no excuse for playing Donkey Kong for 20 years
You have to be brain damaged to do that, and the LTC dude may be a moron, but he is not brain damaged

CULT|James W.
it would be ok to play a lot of genres as long as he doesn't pretend to be an expert though?

CULT|icycalm
Dude... it's ok to do whatever you want
But when I see something I think is funny, I am going to laugh at it
Ultimately, all my essays are about me
But the universe is a wonderful place of limitless variety
So sure, I am sure that creatures exist that love to dip their toes into everything
And yeah, it would be best if such creatures did not pretend to be experts on anything
But, self-knowledge is another quality that varies hugely
You can't expect of a butterfly to be very self-aware

CULT|James W.
Is there a non-videogame equivalent of a Donkey Kong aspie, as in someone who specializes in something very narrow that is not useful? Maybe like a stamp collector?

CULT|icycalm
I would say a stamp collector is a good equivalent

About 1,400 hours in EU4, sliding right in before that 2,000 count. :flag_us:

It's also relative to how much you play overall
If you have played 50,000 hours of games, 2,000 in one very deep game is okay
But some of these kids have almost literally only played ONE game
I would have reached 2,000 in PA by now if mikey hadn't screwed up my fun
And as deeper games get released, expect even my numbers to rise
Who knows how much time we could put into Star Citizen?
If it's all it appears to be, it would dwarf my PA time
There is only ONE game worth putting ALL your time in it, but it's not a videogame
And you have no choice in the matter either
It has infinite complexity too, which helps
And as much difficulty as you can stomach
