Official Trailer

Overall, I am negative about this. First off, it doesn't look like they're using an official setting. It just looks like a "programmer setting", or I suppose it would be "cameraman setting" here. (If it were an official setting, the trailer would heavily promote it, e.g. "In the world of Dragonlance..." etc.) So right away you've killed off half the fun of D&D. And they aren't adapting an adventure either, they just have a "programmer adventure", or I guess "cameraman adventure" again. The sfx look meh, there's too much stilted humor, Chris Pine looks good for a thief but everyone else in the cast is a charmless, ugly moron, whereas they could have had an Avengers-like awesome team with cool classes, a freakin' paladin in gleaming armor, a Doctor Strange-like wizard and so on.

The ONLY thing I like about the trailer is the joke at the end, which is brilliant, and brilliantly captures the fun of being at the table and joking with your friends over the proceedings. But they could have achieved so much more with this. There are adventures in D&D that rival or even handily beat Game of Thrones. THAT'S what they should be adapting here.

Cool poster tho: https://twitter.com/LD_Nolan/status/1550145731108880385

It's the famous ampersand studded with famous D&D monsters like the displacer, mimic, owlbear, et al. And the movie's logo itself is the standard D&D 5E logo, which is nice to see.

They could EASILY start a long-running D&D movie franchise if they just took the best trilogies and adapted them. Instead it'll likely be another one-off that no one will remember ten years from now.

Apparently it is set in the Forgotten Realms:

Eric Francicsco wrote:Set in the official campaign setting of the Forgotten Realms, Honor Among Thieves follows an ensemble of misfits — an all-star cast of Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis — who accidentally unleash an evil menace. To save the world, this ragtag group must steal an ancient relic to set things right.

Because this new poster is still somehow worse.

The teaser looked okay though. My hopes for this movie are that it's fun. I don't expect it to be great, just fun.

There was also a Starfield article on a major journalism site a few weeks back whose main art piece was a Star Citizen screenshot lol. The losers know very well who the winners are, so they can plagiarize them.

This actually looks good. How awesome would it be if it turns into a franchise and we get a new movie every couple of years? If it was Paizo, they would make the movies integral to the Pathfinder metaplot. But if D&D succeeds, Pathfinder might also get a movie eventually, just like it eventually got CRPGs that are already wiping the floor with D&D ones. Paizo's movie would probably be an adaptation of an Adventure Path, just like the CRPGs are.

P.S. Chris Pine is killing it in this. They wouldn't have a movie without him, especially with all these charmless browns.
