Just noticed these new images on the Steam page. They don't look like screenshots to me, too sharp for that, but they portray a wider range of action and environments than I had seen in trailers before. It looks more Far Cry-ish in these images, and with the Far Cry franchise tanking in recent years, we could use a substitute at this point.

There are good reviews too, but they seem uninteresting, so here are the bad ones. Quite a few of the issues sound fixable though, so I would wait and check back in about a year.

For the record, I am against boycotting Russian culture. Russia yes, Russians yes, videogames no. Now pls gib lif2.

The game has an awesome atmosphere that is CONSTANTLY cut into with the annoying protagonist with the atrocious writing. the first two hours are non stop unlocking doors and doing very simple but tedious puzzles ( all while the protagonist makes duke nukem jokes to nintendo power glove ) eventually when you finish what seems like a 2 hour tutorial you are let "free" in what seems to be an open world. That is where the game immediately died for me. You soon realize the game is going to be just frustrating to play to the point that you can not explore the mysterious and creative world, for example; there are cameras that will spot you. If spotted you now have to run and hide or kill robots. the robots are all extremely frustrating to fight and jump all around the screen which you cant even keep track of due to no FOV slider in the game. Then, If you kill robots during this there is a GTA wanted level that spawns more robots. THEN, if you shoot the camera a robot will come and repair it. So there is no clearing out the area to explore, there will ALWAYS be enemies which sounds cool until almost every enemy is really irritating to deal with ( especially with 55 POV ). This game would of been incredible if they leaned into the mysterious and extremely unique atmosphere but instead they added dialogue that was just really a bummer to hear. Its not even to the point where it can be ignored. the protagonist and the glove talk SO much that while im doing something the dialogue would get cut off by OTHER dialogue because i started doing something else that they had to talk about. The worst part is there are moments where you go, "wow this is cool" only to have to deal with almost everything about the game being irritating.

I genuinely haven't gotten so consistently pissed off at a game with mechanics i've used before.
it CONSTANTLY gives me reminders for things I already know
Ammo management is nonexistent due to the microscopic inventory and not nearly enough resource gain to make up for the vast amount of ammo you chew through
Combat is irritatingly unresponsive and the visual cues aren't accurate
the game is missing an entire LAYER of audio, making important scenes, combat, and pretty much more interactive situations seem really dumb! as its just LOADED with silence!
This game focuses way more on trying to be funny and edgy than it does actually making a STORY, the character is CONSTANTLY a prick, the glove is constantly a ♥♥♥♥, they make the same joke 4 times in the span of 15 minutes.
and finally the kicker, the nail in the coffin, dear god the pacing is AWFUL-
so many big things happen 5 minutes between each other with NO BREAK, and its extremely immersion breaking and overall disconcerting.
followed by this games weird level design that have markers that only *sometimes* work, and the 4 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ capsule puzzles that are 3 rooms apart makes me want to bash my head into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wall.
EDIT: Minor gripes, No Fov slider, generally unresponsive controls, irritating melee combat, inconsistent dodge mechanic, No melee blocking without an equitable skill

I genuinely ONLY reccomend this game if you have incredible pain tolerance, like poor comedy, and the attention span of a mushroom.

Pros:
+ beautiful places to explore
+ interesting mechanics a la the Bioshock series

Cons:
- awful, awful, awful dialogue from the protagonist. Like truly awful. Like a discount Jotaro Cujo, but worse.
- melee combat feels weak, weightless, and uninteresting
- animations look choppy and listless
- extremely unlikable protagonist
- the dash mechanic feels clumsy and uninspired

First impression: 6.5/10. Wants to be Bioshock but with a loud-mouthed ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tough guy who thinks everything is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Ill make the reveiw thumbs up once they add it back. Theres no good reason to remove the FOV setting and it makes everything look super zoomed in. When fighting i can hardly see the dodge warning circle and all i can basically is is the upper half of the enemy. Low IQ decision on their part.

So I played a little bit of this, not enough to get to the part where it opens up though. It has the opening you'd expect, where it allows you to stroll through the utopia for a while before throwing you into the dystopia. Kinda like BioShock Infinite actually. The original BioShock almost instantly starts off at the action by comparison, and it has a much tighter intro to boot however.

The setting is pretty cool at least. Like a vision of the future from the 50's, except in Russia (or the Soviet Union in this case) instead of the US that we get with Fallout and BioShock. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more that the game has to offer on this front.

Now I'm not very far into the game, but some of the complaints posted above seem valid. The protagonist certainly comes across like a douche. Maybe he's a bit more appealing with the Russian dub, which I haven't tried yet, but I doubt it. There's quite a lot of dialogue in the game, so much so that it almost seems like the devs were worried that people would get bored if the characters weren't commenting frequently on things you pass by. The FOV thing is real too, but apparently Mundfish knows about it and is releasing a fix; until that point there is a mod that allows you to increase it but I haven't used it yet.

But while the devs don't seem used to making games with this much budget, there isn't really as much Russian jank as I expected. Yeah sometimes the dialogue gets cut off by you entering a new room, and the audio logs will be muted as the characters present in the room will react to stuff. A couple of times I got killed by setpieces that I couldn't have known were going to happen in advance. Maybe they expected players to proceed more cautiously or something. AND I saw the same vendor dude selling his trinkets with the same dialogue like three times in different places in the very beginning. There's definitely jank that's for sure. But generally speaking the visuals and combat have been pretty good so far.

I've only faced a couple of enemy types, but the melee combat has so far felt weighty and responsive. You can even briefly see the "skin" peeled off the robots from where the axe has hit them. It seems like you also get killed the moment an enemy attacks you from behind, even if you have full health. The dodge you get is quite generous too, but most of the time I ended up dying because I got cornered somewhere without realising it. It was hard enough that I felt like I needed to use the shotgun with its limited ammo for some fights, just to give myself some breathing room.

There was also a stealth kill that you can perform, but I haven't had much chance to be very stealthy yet.

All in all, I'm definitely up to play more of the game. Maybe I'll feel differently about it once I've hit the open world part, but for now it's interesting enough to make me want to continue.
