While Annapurna's game publishing arm is known for putting out primarily pretentiousness-based games, Outer Wilds, which is coming to Steam and Xbox one sometime in 2019, seems different, being what looks like a solid space exploration game with a decently attractive cartoony aesthetic (which breaks down when it comes to characters though: pretty ugly character design). Check it out and see what I mean.

Looks like a kind of Myst without the reading.

I am not saying I have high hopes for it or anything, but at least it looks like a proper game.

Finished this game the other day, and I have to say that this is really nice, well-written review apart from the final few paragraphs where the author suddenly seems like he has no idea what he is talking about.

I've no idea how you have to "repeat a lot of boring tasks very quickly to exploit your 22-minute shot at finding something new" when the next time you are navigating the treacherous environment you are closer to "effortlessly jump[ing]/fly[ing] across valleys, gorges", etc. as the review says earlier. You can find shortcuts nearly all the time, especially once you get better at the platforming. Adding to which if you have read or found something important it gets recorded in the ship's log (with large unmissable writing on the spacesuit's UI), and you can check the ship's on-board computer to see how it might relate to anything else you've found in a large, easily navigable, information web. Like, how the fuck is the user interface "underexplained" anyway? Does the guy not know what O2 means or something? It doesn't take a genius to figure out the entire UI within a few minutes of dicking around with a spacesuit on. Maybe when the spacesuit literally tells me in block letters that it's started using oxygen as propellant that means that if I keep using my booster that I'll run out of breathable air? Maybe there was an update since the dude played or something, but at no point was I ever confused about what to do or what there was to "move the story forward". Especially with the information web the computer has.

And that last "particularly offensive" sequence is absolutely amazing. An especially climactic trial that perfectly befits the setting, on top of being particularly visually breathtaking. I think the guy that has been quoted for the last few paragraphs is just a moron or something. Only way that I can explain how he ran to guides to find solutions to problems that are clear and logical only if you actually pay attention.

It's three guys lol, if I remember correctly. With the last three paragraphs I was hedging my bets just because it's an Annapurna-published game and they usually publish pretentious crap. That's also why the rating is 4/5 instead of 5/5.

At any rate, the majority of the review was written by the good guy, and as you said it's a good review and it lead you to the game, so all is good. I'll just delete the other two guys' comments and all will be well, so thanks for the help with that!

So do you think the game is worth 5/5?

Oh yeah, for sure. It's definitely 5/5 for me.

Though there is a pretentious ending, basically at the point where you can't die anymore (at least I don't think you could die then, I didn't try). There are more puzzles then until you finish the game, but it's stupidly easy. It didn't sour the whole experience up to that point, but it does suck that the ending is like that. Also about halfway through I noticed the alien race your character is a part of don't use gender pronouns, and the player character's gasps started sounding really androgynous too, lol. Pretty easy to forget about it though once you go out into space again.

So here's what I've done. I removed the offending paragraphs and replaced them with some of your comments, then bumped up the rating to five stars. Thanks for the help, and if you notice anything else that needs fixing let me know. I am going to update the GOTY feature with this game now, but we can talk about that in the GOTY thread if need be (it will be provisional first runner-up to Sekiro).

This is getting an expansion on September 28.

It gives me a good excuse to try the game with the VR mod installed. Found here: https://outerwildsmods.com/

There seems to be some kind of multiplayer mod too.

So the expansion is finally out and I have it installed and ready to go, but... I want to play it in VR, and the VR mod is only compatible with an earlier version of the game. A version I can't roll back to with the current EGS functionality. I really should have tried it out before the update to see if the VR is worth waiting for.

At least it looks like the mod's dev will update it for the expansion eventually.

Is there plans to support echoes of the eye dlc?

Raicuparta wrote:Yes, it will eventually be supported. There's just no telling how long it will take.

There was one "small" update they did once which didn't really have any visible changes for most users, and it took me a week of constant development to make NomaiVR support that version. So I imagine that a whole new DLC has the potential for much more complicated changes.
