[PC] [ONE] [PS4] [SW] Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection

Multiplatform compilation of the 3D Ninja Gaiden games.

I have mixed feelings about 1 and 2 being the Sigma releases. They were not directed by Itagaki. I'm fine with the first Sigma but I wish they added Black as well. Sigma 2 is a redesign of Ninja Gaiden II to make it work with the limitations and advantages of the PS3: It gained some graphical effects and resolution, some stages and bosses were added, Rachel, Ayane and Momiji are playable, but other stages were cut and it lost the amazing blood and dismemberment features of the 360 original. Enemy count was drastically reduced (difficulty was pumped up to compensate).

The Razor's Edge update sounds like it rendered the original release of Ninja Gaiden 3 obsolete, so I'm fine with the latter not being part of the compilation.

Even with the shortcomings of this compilation, I'm very happy to see these games on PC.

Releasing in June 10th 2021.

Shaun Prescott wrote:After a decade of having to make do with a crappy zombie spin-off, the PC is finally getting the modern Ninja Gaiden games. The Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection collects Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge, and it's hitting Steam on June 10.

All three games have been console exclusives until now, and the first two are some of the most loved and demanding action games around (though fans will endlessly debate the changes made to the Sigma games vs. the originals). If you're into Team Ninja's recent Nioh games, though, these are definitely worth a look. Ninja Gaiden 3 didn't fare so well among the series' veterans—it was a more cinematic and less challenging outing—but it'll still be nice to have on PC.

The rerelease was announced at today's Nintendo Direct showcase (it's also coming to PS4 and Xbox One). There's no word on whether these reissues will feature any graphics upgrades, but they'll come with most of the games' previously released modes and DLC costumes, as well as four new playable characters in the form of Ayane, Rachel, Momiji and Kasumi.

It's mainly online stuff that's absent: Ninja Gaiden 2's Tag Missions won't be available, nor will the Clan Battle or Shadows of the World modes be available in Ninja Gaiden 3. Even without those online features it'll be nice to finally play these games on PC when they release on June 10.

So Tecmo doesn't have proper backups of Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden II and that's why they will not be part of this collection:

Fumihiko Yasuda wrote:The data we have left from Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2 are in various pieces to the point that we were unable to salvage them. However, when we worked on Sigma and Sigma 2, we went and collected as much of that data as possible and organised it. And since we could utilise this data, that's why we chose the Sigma games.

It's surprising to see that this is still happening with games developed in the 21st century. The only way to play the best versions of those games in high resolution will be emulating the original releases, then. They run flawlessly in the Xbox One emulators.
