Rust skins

Unread postby icycalm » 05 Oct 2020 05:42

A bunch of things have been added to the game recently including boat vendors, an elevator, dirt paths/trails, and a Secretlab chair skin that you only unlock if you buy an actual Rust-themed chair from Secretlab out of two available options: https://secretlab.co/pages/rust

Image

You get the skin as a code on purchase of the chair, and I bet that people will eventually be able to sell those skins on the marketplace to recoup the cost of the chair, and probably even make some profit on top of it. The only reason I am not jumping in is because I don't like the (real) chair, and would much prefer a Cyberpunk one if it was still available (it isn't, though you can sign up to a list to be notified if they make more of them): https://secretlab.co/pages/cyberpunk2077

Image

Trailer for the Rust chair and skin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eS0jZ2EjSbs

I'll try to grab the skin if it shows up on the marketplace at a reasonable price, which I doubt.

However, they also added a spacesuit skin for the radsuit, which I DID purchase. Like all normal skins, you can only buy it officially from Steam for the duration of this month, until the next forced wipe. It's €8,95 and you can buy it from here: https://store.steampowered.com/itemstor ... ail/10180/

Image

It even comes with some new lore in the description:

Facepunch wrote:The urgency of what would later be known as Project Nova required Cobalt to bypass the design phase of an EVA suit - something that would normally take years when they had weeks. Using early Soviet designs (acquired by costly industrial espionage), Cobalt managed to produce a limited number of protective space suits. The whereabouts of most of them are unknown, but some were retained for terrestrial applications, given their radiation protection properties.

And I of course bought it, as I buy all cool Rust skins. I must have spent at least €150-200 on these skins so far, and their current value is at least €300. You can see my collection here: https://steamcommunity.com/id/icycalm/inventory/#252490

I have an eye for cool stuff, and cool stuff tends to appreciate over time, and I am telling you this spacesuit skin is cool af and will definitely skyrocket in price in the coming months and years, after the Rust store stops selling them. After that, you'll only be able to get them from the marketplace at higher prices. For the record, here is the official Facepunch Rust store on Steam, whose offerings change every month:

https://store.steampowered.com/itemstore/252490/

And here is the Rust marketplace where you can find past offerings:

https://steamcommunity.com/market/search?appid=252490

I remember for example when this horror-themed sleeping bag was going for 20 euros a couple years ago, and now it fetches €233!

https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... rror%20Bag

Image

Moreover, when it originally appeared in the store for the limited time window, it must have cost around 5-6 euros like everything else. There are people who make a living out of Rust skin speculation, and if you google "Rust skins" you'll find countless sites that buy and sell them, or even skin gambling sites (no idea how they work).

The point I want to make is, 1) This stuff exists, and 2) If you buy this spacesuit skin now you will 100% be able to resell it in a few months, or even weeks, for at least twice the price. If you hold on long enough it could be five or ten times the price too. And you can buy as many of them as you want.

Now, if you sell this stuff on the marketplace, you only get Steam wallet credit, which you cannot withdraw to your bank account. So you can only use the credit to buy games. But it's still a pretty sweet deal: buy a skin now, and you can sell it for a full-price game a few months down the line. Personally, I am not planning to sell my skins because I love using them in the game (and I can also make as many copies in the game as I want to distribute to all my teammates), but I am just sayin', for those who just want to get a free game, this is an easy way to do it. Also, there ARE ways to convert Steam wallet credit to real money, and there are people reportedly making a living out of this, but I am not interested so I don't know how it works precisely. If you google around you can find some answers.

Back to Rust proper, I'll say that I was very disappointed when I learned that the spacesuit is just a skin for the radsuit and doesn't add any functionality to the game. I was hoping that it would be paired with the Launch Site eventually in some way, but now that they are asking people for money for the suit, I just don't see how this could happen in the future. How could they turn the suit into a proper item, if tons of people have already paid money to own a unique skin of it? Wouldn't they have to give the money back or something? The whole deal is kinda depressing.

Anyway, I bought the skin because I just had to, and the recent additions to the game have been great, and the ones coming up—like weather effects and brand-new graphics—will be even greater, so I look forward to playing a wipe pretty soon and checking all this stuff out, including my new spacesuit. And note that, unlike all my other skins, I won't be able to craft copies of this for people simply because the radsuit isn't craftable, so if you want the suit in the game you have to buy the skin, and it'll never be as cheap as it is now.

New hazmat suit skin dropping soon:

Still two hours to go before the video and purchase links and stuff go live. Apparently it'll function the same as the spacesuit skin. Shame it's just a skin though.

Just bought a bunch of skins, and I'll show them below, but first a word about skinning Cult Base. I have very particular tastes and I hate 99% of designs. So if you're planning on buying skins for Cult Base, it's best to clear them with me first in this thread. I will almost certainly hate what you show me, so if you don't like me to say it, just don't post lol. Even if I mildly like something, I still won't clear it for Cult Base, I have to be BLOWN AWAY by something to want to use it. After all, if the default textures are better, why buy anything?

Just the other day some guy who came through our base said "I have never seen such beautiful skins". He is on stream saying it, but it's a 19-hour stream and I'll be damned if I am going to look for it. And in the past we've had guys coming to our base because they thought it was an official monument building, not player-built. Just sayin', so you get an idea of what I am going for with Cult Base.

Note that I've made a LOT of money buying skins. "Made" isn't quite right, because I haven't sold anything, and I don't plan to, but what I am saying is that my skins have appreciated massively, and my collection is worth hundreds of dollars now. That Crime Bag skin that you see me use? I must have paid 10-15 for it, and it's worth €69.04 now: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... rime%20Bag

Image

The Rubber Hazard Mat I use? €39.99 now: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... zard%20Mat

Image

The Skeleton Hoodie? Almost as much as a real hoodie at €25.50: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... n%20Hoodie

Image

Even my Studded Bone Knife is expensive at €8.51: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... ne%20Knife

Image

It makes sense that prices will be shooting up since every item is released in limited quantities and sold on the official store for a limited time, and after that you can only get it in the marketplace from whoever bothered to buy it. And since Rust is in the top 10 of Steam sellers week in, week out, for seemingly ever, demand keeps rising while supply remains static, and even diminishes as some people stop playing the game (obviously not the smart ones), and forget about the skins they've bought, thus taking them off the market. So you could just shadow my purchases and you'll make money on Steam, which you can then sell for... other videogames I guess, though I've no idea why you'd want to play anything else.

How high can the prices get?

Horror Bag for €642.13: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... rror%20Bag

Image

I was eyeing that when it was about €25, but thought it was too expensive lol.

This Metal Tree Door IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT ALL, i.e. there's no player selling it, and it currently has 770 buyers looking for it with highest bid at €1,926.80: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... ree%20Door

Is it worth it? Not to me, but your mileage may vary.

Image

Note that Steam won't allow you to convert your Steam credit to actual money. You can only spend it on their store, but there are outside services that somehow do the conversion, probably for some commission. Or you can just ask your friends to give you cash for games they want which you gift them with your Steam credit. I am not interested in any of this, but I am sayin'.

If you do decide to shadow my buys, don't look at the prices every week. Forget about them and come back in a year or two. That's how I made all this money. And many of my purchases go nowhere. Some of them gain a little, and a few gain a LOT. So if you just buy one skin, don't expect much, if anything. In any case, if you want money, buy crypto, I think it's retarded to try to make money on Rust skins, but I did 10x my money in this market without even thinking about it or even knowing it is possible, simply because I have a great eye. That said, many of the most expensive skins are ugly as sin, so price is certainly not the measure of anything, especially when it comes to aesthetics.

The only way the market could crash is if Facepunch releases Rust 2, or updates their models so that the skins no longer work. I very much want them to do this even if my skin collection drops to zero value. After all, with nearly 500 hours in the game and rising, I've gotten my value out of all these purchases and then some.

So with that preamble out of the way, here are my latest purchases.

I went through the, much expanded since last time I looked at it last summer, 34-page list of door skins and bought a bunch: https://steamcommunity.com/market/searc ... price_desc

The submarine door I've already linked in Robo's sub hangar thread, it's very cool and very expensive at €14.10 [ > ]. Here are the rest of my purchases:

Trophy Pirate Door for €13.80: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... ate%20Door

Image

Another super-expensive door skin like the submarine one, but it matches the awesome kraken box skin I have, and it'll be perfect for the boathouse.

This is the box: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... te%20Chest

It's one of the most expensive ones at €7.50.

Image

Bandit Sheet Metal Door for €1.58: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... tal%20Door

Image

This one I bought because it's part of the red-skull bandit theme, and I buy all of them. I even have a rug. It's a normal-priced door, 1-2 euros is what most of them cost, so it doesn't really cost me anything.

This is the rug, and it goes for €17.71 now. I think I bought it way lower.

https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... ndit%20Rug

Image

And to tie it all together I just also bought the Bandit Garage Door for €3.22: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... age%20Door

Image

This bandit theme will probably be perfect for a motorcycle garage, once they put in motorcycles (which they are planning to).

Quarantine Sheet Metal Door for €0.88: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... tal%20Door

This is just so gorgeous I just had to have it even though I've no idea what to use it for. Maybe for our arctic outpost to give it that Thing vibe.

Image

Military Storage Wooden Door at €1.09: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... den%20Door

This is just a US Army-themed wooden door, but I buy all the US Army-themed stuff (there are tons of them including roadblocks, guitars, etc.), so I just had to have it.

Image

Engineer's Door for €1.07: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... 27s%20Door

This isn't a particularly stunning design, but it's utilitarian, and I already have matching boxes to go with it, so why not.

Image

Here's the box: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... %20Toolbox

Image

I think there are other items, like worker's clothes, that have matching designs, and I may look into them at some point.

Raider's Cove Garage Door for €1.58: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... age%20Door

This is a fun door that I'd like to use in the pool area, but I am not sure how a garage door could be integrated there. Maybe in a future design. At any rate it's cheap so I bought it and maybe I'll figure something out.

Image

Weather Wood Door for €0.88: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... ood%20Door

Another fun door, though it's just a wood door so it can't house anything valuable. I thought I might make a 1x1 in the pool area and put the fun items there like the water guns and inflatables. Though seeing as inflatables require 1 tarp, they aren't quite so cheap in Rustoria US Main...

Image

I also went through the three pages of hammers and found and bought by far the most beautiful one: https://steamcommunity.com/market/searc ... price_desc

Silver Leaf Hammer for €4.80: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... f%20Hammer

Image

I bought one sleeping bag too, the Captain's Bed for €4.02: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... %27s%20Bed

This will go in the boathouse with all the kraken skins.

Image

And finally Industrial Lights for 3.79€ from the official Rust store: https://store.steampowered.com/itemstor ... tail/10202

Facepunch wrote:Industrial lights to illuminate your base. can be placed on floors, ceilings, or walls. comes in Red, Green, and White variations.

This isn't a skin, it's a new craftable item, and the store and the market offer a few of these. I already have some, like strobe lighting, smoke machine etc., that can be wired up with alarms to confuse intruders.

Image

I have my eye on a bunch more skins, and will probably be buying more soon, especially if I decide to play a second wipe this month. Stay tuned and feel free to share your skin/item purchases and don't worry what I'll think of them lol.

I bought this wooden Bone Collector Door:

Bone Collector Door at $1.48: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... tor%20Door

And the matching box:

Bone Collector Box at $2.38: https://steamcommunity.com/market/listi ... tor%20Box#

Not sure what they could be used for. I guess a dedicated skull collection room?
