1. Even the speed of the RAM matters.

2. It's entirely possible to play at 4K, even on 20-series, let alone on 30- or the upcoming 40-.

For the record, I now play on Very High on my 1080 Shadow. It's a big jump up from High, and I want to see the cities in max detail.

Great tool by the developers that compares your specs to the playerbase's and the recommended specs. Haven't seen anything like it for any other game.

Note that my ping is high because my Shadow is in Paris and I play on US servers. Also the Shadow has a weak CPU because they figure the GPU is what matters. Which is true for most games but not Star Citizen, at least not yet (upcoming updates will shift more workload to the GPU).

Never heard of a game using more than 16, let alone more than 32. Looks like we found a reason to buy 64.

I was just about to order 16 GB more RAM for my laptop, and then realized it already has 32!

Gigabyte AORUS 15G YC-8ES2450SH - Ordenador portátil de 15.6" FHD 240Hz, Intel Core i7-10870H, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Nvidia RTX3080GB-8GB, Windows 10 H

I just need to take it out of the box lol and install everything.

So I have 32gb of ram but it’s running at 2400mhz. How important is it to have 3200mhz and up?

busajohn62 wrote:I was looking to go to 3200mhz would I have that issue at that speed?

Valkyrient wrote:It depends on your RAM. If 3200 is the absolute max you can go, then yes you might run into issues. If it's rated to go faster then it'll probably be ok. My RAM is rated for 3600MHz but if I try to run it at 3600 Star Citizen (and only Star Citizen) crashes regularly. If I run it at 3000 everything is reliable.

EastLimp1693 wrote:My ram is xmped to 3200 cl14, I run it at 4000cl16 with no issues in sc.

EastLimp1693 wrote:Star citizen is pretty good stress test, unless your system 100% stable on max load you’ll have issues.

TheBlackDred wrote:I don't know where other people are getting their information, but your RAM speed is super important, and not just for SC. I don't know the exact trade off for SC going with slow 32GB vs fast 16GB, but I can tell you that fast is almost always better. I set aside a large percentage of my PC budget because I didn't want to compromise on RAM, I wanted fast and a lot of it so I went with 64GB of 4000mhz. Star Citizen uses quite a lot of it, so you do you, but if I was given the choice right now, I would shop around and get the fastest set I could find, even if I had to sacrifice some capacity to do it.

What settings have you guys changed to make the game run more smoothly?

bar10dr2 wrote:Game has to be installed on SSD or else it will chug.

Minimum RAM requirements are 16 GB, 32 recommended. If you have 16, make sure to close other apps first that eat RAM, like browsers and such.

In the graphics settings

  • Set graphics quality to high, as this uses the GPU more (Game is currently CPU limited)
  • Set clouds to medium (At least try different settings here, depending on your rig it might give you a lot of frames on planets)
  • Motion blur and film grain off

The first time you go anywhere, be it the first time you load into the game, or the first time you go to a new landing zone or planet, it will compile the shaders for that area.

It will only do this once and store the result to drive, so the next time it will just read them from drive. But it does mean that the first time you load in, the game will be very slow and chunky for a while.

So I recomend the first time you load in just walk around in your hab for a few minutes and wait for all the shaders to compile.

Anysar wrote:Setting the shader cache to 10gb or more depending on your ssd size also is necessary

All of this are m2 slot SSD with fast then 2000 MB read and ( Most) write. But this only what i think. Perhaps Other has more Data and know it better.

If you have a gen 12 or 13 Intel CPU, you might want to look into disabling your E-Cores if you have any. I tried running Star Citizen on an i9-13900K and it was stuttering so badly it was hard to aim. After turning the E-Cores off in the BIOS it runs at over 90 FPS with plenty of CPU and GPU to spare:

This is in 4K with all settings on max aside from motion blur.

Here are the rest of the specs that are relevant to Star Citizen:

CPU: i9-13900K
GPU: RTX 4090
RAM: 64 GB DDR5 5600
Storage: 2 TB SSD

The game loads from the menu to the game in about 30 seconds.

Edit: The total cost for the system (including fees for assembling the system and installing the OS) was about 5,150 USD.

Star Citizen RTX 4090 at 4K Max settings. Tested with different ram settings +1080p, 1440p. Same identical lorville run average of 3 runs. Patch 3.17.4 (Pre 3.18). Interestingly slow ram still bottlenecks the 4090 in 4k

I just received a new gaming laptop, the MSI Stealth 17 Studio A13VI-017:
https://us.msi.com/Laptop/Stealth-17-Studio-A13VX

CPU: i9-13900H
GPU: RTX 4090 laptop
RAM: 64 GB DDR5 5200
Storage: 2 TB SSD

The CPU and GPU are gimped compared to the desktop versions, but at the moment, I prefer the space and portability a laptop will provide.

Is head tracking/eye tracking worth it? Same with getting flight sticks, etc.?
https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/co ... _same_with

Aneria69 wrote:I use dual sticks and head tracking. I’d highly recommend two sticks to play, the game feels entirely more fun imo.

Also I use head tracking on a 48inch screen for flying and cannot fly without it now, it’s amazing and works perfectly for me. Being able to look above and to the side without changing direction makes me way better at things like combat and landing. I imagine racing will also be excellent with it.

I tried head tracking for fps but like others, I don’t think it really adds to that side of the game.

Suspicious-Parsley-2 wrote:Dual Sticks changes the game in my opinion. I've enjoyed the game ALLOT more since I got them.

I actually purchased this game because of the Tobii eye tracking integration. I had mine sitting around for years collecting dust. Eye tracking is cool, there are cheaper alternatives. If you have a web cam look at opentrack, that should get you a taste. I use another program called FaceTrackNoir to smooth tracking of my tobii 4c, I like it better than open track, but it's not free, only like 4£.

There are two forms of tracking with tobii, head and eye. Head tracking is more useful in my opinion, eye tracking is distracting.

Eye/head tracking is great when you are in the cockpit, is makes it so much easier to view up, down, side to side, and check your blind spots.

SpecialistThink1968 wrote:If you're into SC, my advice would be. Prioritize Hardware upgrades over pledge ships. Especially since they are in a similar price range. Better hardware (screen, graphics card, sticks, headtracking etc) add so much immersion to the game and also give you joy beyond SC too.

I know many people who spend easily a grand on pledge ships, but first I would say, put that money into HW upgrades.

Chew-Magna wrote:Flight sticks help immensely for immersion, and offer much finer overall ship control compared to m/kb. It's kind of like playing a racing game with a keyboard vs using a racing wheel. There's a lot less finger dancing when it comes to flight controls as well. Aiming is where they tend to fall behind, it's easier to be precise with a mouse compared to stick. It is entirely possible with a stick, but the skill ceiling is higher. Put the time in and you can be just as good. At first you'll be saying "This is impossible" and then one day you'll notice that you aren't struggling anymore and it's easy and natural.

Head tracking also helps with immersion, and can have a tactical advantage as well. It's far easier to track targets and be situationally aware with a head tracker. You can also do neat things like look at a target to select it, scan it, or missile lock it, without having to turn your ship to point at it. You can do these things with m/kb or any other control scheme as well, but it's much easier, more fluid, and natural feeling with a tracker. No additional keys to press or anything, you just look.

You can have head tracking, eye tracking, or both. There are many different head tracker options on the market, eye tracking is much more limited. The Tobii eye tracker is the only real one out there, it can do head and eye tracking. The cost is much higher though. Head tracking can be done far cheaper, to almost free.

Are sticks or head tracking necessary? Nope. But they go a long way.

SC doesn't have VR support. Yet. It's been a planned feature for years, but I wouldn't expect it for a long time to come.

I've always flown HOSAS, dual sticks, in SC. I was already used to it from Elite, so the learning curve for SC was basically zero for me. I had a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 and a Saitek ST290 Pro, and those got the job done for a very long time (still have them too, 23 and 17 years old and continue to work like champs). I "upgraded" to Thrustmaster T16000M sticks based on recommendations only to find out for myself, talking to others who know their business, and later research, that they're garbage and are best avoided. Now I have VKB Gladiators.

For head tracking I use a Grass Monkey Simulations 60hz Joseph II Odyssey. Amazing piece of kit, especially for the price. Punches way above TrackIR while being cheaper.

kozztant wrote:Head tracking is better when doing fps stuff. Having a gun or something out helps focus your gaze and get your bearings when looking around. When I'm not usung a gun or tool I turn it off. Hard to keep track of where I'm looking.

kozztant wrote:I use it only when I have my gun out. Great for peaking around corners/boxes. I also have eye tracking to toggle off during ADS. Works pretty good.

Thetomas wrote:HOSAS is the way. Also, I've owned both and tried them side by side, and TrackIR is much better than tobii. More responsive, more range, more customizability in settings. The only thing tobii does better is marketing.

Quite a few people saying pedals are useful. I wouldn't underestimate pedals.
