1. Even the speed of the RAM matters.

2. It's entirely possible to play at 4K, even on 20-series, let alone on 30- or the upcoming 40-.

For the record, I now play on Very High on my 1080 Shadow. It's a big jump up from High, and I want to see the cities in max detail.

Great tool by the developers that compares your specs to the playerbase's and the recommended specs. Haven't seen anything like it for any other game.

Note that my ping is high because my Shadow is in Paris and I play on US servers. Also the Shadow has a weak CPU because they figure the GPU is what matters. Which is true for most games but not Star Citizen, at least not yet (upcoming updates will shift more workload to the GPU).

Never heard of a game using more than 16, let alone more than 32. Looks like we found a reason to buy 64.

I was just about to order 16 GB more RAM for my laptop, and then realized it already has 32!

Minimum RAM requirements are 16 GB, 32 recommended. If you have 16, make sure to close other apps first that eat RAM, like browsers and such.

In the graphics settings

  • Set graphics quality to high, as this uses the GPU more (Game is currently CPU limited)
  • Set clouds to medium (At least try different settings here, depending on your rig it might give you a lot of frames on planets)
  • Motion blur and film grain off

The first time you go anywhere, be it the first time you load into the game, or the first time you go to a new landing zone or planet, it will compile the shaders for that area.

It will only do this once and store the result to drive, so the next time it will just read them from drive. But it does mean that the first time you load in, the game will be very slow and chunky for a while.

So I recomend the first time you load in just walk around in your hab for a few minutes and wait for all the shaders to compile.

If you have a gen 12 or 13 Intel CPU, you might want to look into disabling your E-Cores if you have any. I tried running Star Citizen on an i9-13900K and it was stuttering so badly it was hard to aim. After turning the E-Cores off in the BIOS it runs at over 90 FPS with plenty of CPU and GPU to spare:

Here are the rest of the specs that are relevant to Star Citizen:

CPU: i9-13900K
GPU: RTX 4090
RAM: 64 GB DDR5 5600
Storage: 2 TB SSD

The game loads from the menu to the game in about 30 seconds.


Edit: The total cost for the system (including fees for assembling the system and installing the OS) was about 5,150 USD.

Star Citizen RTX 4090 at 4K Max settings. Tested with different ram settings +1080p, 1440p. Same identical lorville run average of 3 runs. Patch 3.17.4 (Pre 3.18). Interestingly slow ram still bottlenecks the 4090 in 4k

Is head tracking/eye tracking worth it? Same with getting flight sticks, etc.?

I actually purchased this game because of the Tobii eye tracking integration. I had mine sitting around for years collecting dust. Eye tracking is cool, there are cheaper alternatives. If you have a web cam look at opentrack, that should get you a taste. I use another program called FaceTrackNoir to smooth tracking of my tobii 4c, I like it better than open track, but it's not free, only like 4£.

There are two forms of tracking with tobii, head and eye. Head tracking is more useful in my opinion, eye tracking is distracting.

Eye/head tracking is great when you are in the cockpit, is makes it so much easier to view up, down, side to side, and check your blind spots.

Are sticks or head tracking necessary? Nope. But they go a long way.

SC doesn't have VR support. Yet. It's been a planned feature for years, but I wouldn't expect it for a long time to come.

I've always flown HOSAS, dual sticks, in SC. I was already used to it from Elite, so the learning curve for SC was basically zero for me. I had a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 and a Saitek ST290 Pro, and those got the job done for a very long time (still have them too, 23 and 17 years old and continue to work like champs). I "upgraded" to Thrustmaster T16000M sticks based on recommendations only to find out for myself, talking to others who know their business, and later research, that they're garbage and are best avoided. Now I have VKB Gladiators.

For head tracking I use a Grass Monkey Simulations 60hz Joseph II Odyssey. Amazing piece of kit, especially for the price. Punches way above TrackIR while being cheaper.

Quite a few people saying pedals are useful. I wouldn't underestimate pedals.
