Playing on handhelds

Unread postby icycalm » 06 Sep 2022 21:15

We were talking on Discord about whether the Steam Deck could run it, so I did a search. I remember Life is Feudal was planning a phone app for farming etc., but the game didn't do very well funding-wise, so that was scrapped. Rust did release an app, but you can't play the game through it, you can only track the map basically, maybe control some electrical devices at most. A complex app, or even better a full-handheld mode or version would go well with these time-intensive basically "alternate universe" games, and Star Citizen is/will be the biggest of them, so if I can get it running on a handheld, I'd be interested.

Btw, THIS is the handheld killer-app. There is NO OTHER type of game that justifies handheld usage. Every other type of game is worse on handhelds. This type is worse too, but not when you're logging in on the go to do admin stuff to your character/base/clan that you can't do any other way at the time. Handhelds finally found a use!

The above was an older video from March. Here is one from July:

IM0001 wrote:Luckily the Gamepad Map that is default with the game is already really good. A few things needed tweaking and the Deck does have a few extra buttons to add mappings too, but once you get it figured out, its pretty dang comprehensive. I'm still just trying to get used to the stick layout which is why I eat a rock at the end there.

Dragonrabbit wrote:it's bonkers that it runs that well. i wonder how well it handles the cities?

IM0001 wrote:Lorville runs about 14-16FPS. Not great but not terrible enough to make it unplayable.

That city is still a little cursed and was the only place my Deck (And my main Desktop PC) crash trying to just get out of that dang city lol.

Luckily a reboot and fresh server seemed to fix that so who knows.

So very playable in the above attempt. And here's a guide how to install it, from the same guy of that second video:

There are various methods to get it working on Steam Deck, and some of them appear reasonably playable. One person reports being able to run box missions for example, which would be good enough performance for us to run a Carrack or Starfarer pilot etc. But in all, I suspect that a ROG Ally [ > ] or G Cloud [ > ] will provide a far superior experience. Note that they are saying you really need a keyboard and mouse with the Deck, and I suspect the same is true of all handhelds.
