This is almost certainly the secret feature teased by Jared in the Asteroid Bases ISC [ > ] a few weeks back that "Christopher doesn't want me to say just yet". It seems that if you get through all the Contested Zones, you reach a hangar that gives you an in-game ship. There are several of these ships for rewards including lowly stuff like Cutters, but the big kahuna is a new F8C variant. Not sure if it has different stats/components, but the paint is certainly different.
This is very significant because up to now the only way to get the F8C has been either by reaching very high Concierge, or by dropping $300 ($260 Warbond), and even then only a couple times a year, and even then if you had a gold ticket from a special event that was only run once or twice iirc. People are still trading these gold tickets back and forth. But now everyone can get this apex fighter in the game... in Pyro.
Chaining all the zones and challenges won't be easy though. And you have to do it multiple times to get lucky and get the F8C. Still, now the ship can finally be acquired in-game. And that's certainly huge news.
