[PS3] Region locking/compatibility issues

Unread postby Sn0wp1r4t3 » 14 Jan 2007 05:42

I just now figured out that the PS3 is a region free console, which is awesome IMO. But what I was wondering is, does that mean it can play Japanese PS2 games as is?

I guess you mean on a US PS3.

That's a good question. The answer is probably somewhere out there, on one of the hundreds of gaming blogs on the internet. Myself I don't really much care for the answer, as I've now got a Jap PS3.

If I were you I would simply go to someplace like NeoGAF and ask away.

Icy have you tried playing a PAL or a US PS2/PS game in your JP PS3?Also how's the compatibilty with PS2 games, have you tested any Import PS2 shmup on PS3?

Ill try to gather any possible information from now on and post on this thread. Please do the same.Getting a JP PS3 with a way to run Pal games (future patches maybe?) or a PAL one with Import enable capabilities is extremely interesting for people with PS2 import favourites (especially shmups). However the difficulties will be many, we are talking about Playstation but I do have really high hopes indeed.

I don't have any PAL PS2 games, and my besides PS3 is not here yet. It's on its way from Japan right now, though, so I should have it sometime next week if all goes well.

But yeah, this is a cool idea. I'll post in this thread whatever discoveries I make in the future. In terms of hardware issues and back-compatibility the PS3 is certainly the most interesting of the three consoles.

PS1/2 games, DVDs, and Blu-Ray movies are region locked on PS3.

Only PS3 Blu-Ray Disc games aren't region locked.

That's interesting info, thanks.

My PS3 arrived this morning, and I've got a bunch of games and cables in the mail, so I'll be reporting back soon.

Thanks Icy, your results will be extremely useful.
Assuming you have now a JP PS3 and US/PAL/JP ps1/2/3 games, what we need to know are :

1.PS3 JP system run Pal PS One game? YES / NO / TBA
2.PS3 JP system run US PS One game? YES / NO / TBA
3.PS3 JP system run Pal PS2 game? YES / NO / TBA
4.PS3 JP system run US PS2 game? YES / NO / TBA
5.PS3 JP system run Pal PS3 game? YES / NO / TBA
6.PS3 JP system run US PS3 game? YES / NO / TBA
7.PS3 JP system works great/lagless with (USB PS2-to-USB adaptor)*, with PS2 joyapds?
YES w/o lag / NO / TBA / YES but w/ lag
8.PS3 JP system works great/lagless with (USB PS2-to-USB adaptor)*, with PS2 HRAP sticks - HORI sticks in general?
YES w/o lag / NO / TBA / YES but w/ lag
9.JP PS3 system run JP PS One games? YES / NO / TBA

*Please insert the name of the PS2-to-USB adaptor used*

So far we are sure that :
10.JP PS3 system run JP PS2 games? YES
Also, according to dementia :
1.PS3 JP system run Pal PS One game? NO
2.PS3 JP system run US PS One game? NO
3.PS3 JP system run Pal PS2 game? NO
4.PS3 JP system run US PS2 game? NO

So does anyone have any new news on this? I am really interested in knowing whether a US PS3 could play PS2 Imports. This would save me so much money and trouble from having to buy my own machines and or JP PS2. Instead I could kill two birds with one stone by just buying a PS3. I would like to contribute myself, but I am not to much up on how region protection works and I don't have a lot of money to throw around.

Any news will be greatly appreciated.

Sn0wp1r4t3, are you sure PS3 games are region-free?

AFAIK, the PS3 _does_ have region-locking capability for PS3 games as well, it's just not mandatory anymore. While I think Sony has stated that first-party games will be released region-free, third-party developers can region-lock their PS3 games if they want to.

So...
5.PS3 JP system run Pal PS3 game? (Depends on the game)
6.PS3 JP system run US PS3 game? (Depends on the game)

Something else I'd want to know is whether some PS1/PS2 games don't run well on the PS3. I think they're run in emulation mode, and if so there may be some backward-compatibily problems (like for some xbox games on 360). Has anyone run into problems with specific PS1/PS2 games?
