Use the contraj ROM set, don't forget to change the difficulty to normal (through dip switches). The Famicom port is not comparable, I'll add another board for it as soon as someone submits a score.

Code: Select all
1. 3,980,600 - zinger - ALL - MAME
2. 3,768,600 - JoshF  - ALL - MAME
3.
4.
5.

Do you know how the game limits you from infinite milking?

No. I still don't understand how the scoring system works?

Neither do I. I remember standing in one place and shooting for a long time and not dying, but there's no way an arcade game lets you do this forever.

I ran some experiments, with very weird results.

If you haven't noticed, points aren't calculated to your score per popcorn enemy you kill (at least not instantly). I found an infinite milking spot in stage one and stood there for a while with score increasing every other minute or so until I proceeded (clearing the stage with 70-80,000, compared to the what, ~30,000 you would normally get?). I restarted and went to the same spot, but this time I scotch taped the jump and shot button on my controller and sat down to watch the spectacle. It went on for a long time but no score increases this time until: after a while enemies started to spawn from behind me aswell, and when one finally killed me, there was a score increase of ~15,000.

I don't know what the hell is going on, but in my brief experience, this game is way broken.

EDIT: I'd love to see the world record, did anyone copy the AIVA archive?

Just PM him at Shmups and he'll tell you.

My game keeps crashing after I run off the screen after beating the second first-person level boss. Does this have something to do with autofire?

I don't think so. It works much better in Mame 0.123 (I've only encountered the problem once since I started using it).

Forgot to ask which version we're playing. The US version has a power-up that basically lets you skip the second stage.

Ok, didn't know about that. Read first post.

I've noticed contraj is automatically set to easy.

And I found out how the game keeps you from infinite milking.: these two silver spheres come at you from the top corners of the screen after a certain amount of time. Invisible timers suck.

EDIT: It turns out that power-up isn't exclusive to the US version, it just hasn't appeared in any version of MAME I've played it in yet. Weird.

How long did it take for them to appear? Never seen them.

Regarding the difficulty, shouldn't easy be default if that's what it's set to?

Also, you just broke the Twin Galaxies world record. ;)

Ok, I beat normal too. Where did you get those extra points? Milking? There's no stock end bonus, is there?

It was at the boss on the second level. Maybe they only show up then.

Yeah. I guess it's not easy that's just what the MAME guys named it because it was the easiest setting.

Also, you just broke the Twin Galaxies world record. ;)

I must've shattered it with my new record then.

There's no stock end bonus, is there?

No, but there's a glitch that increases your stock counter by 15.

Code: Select all
3,768,600 - JoshF - ALL - MAME

That's how far I got to counter-stopping it before I got bored. There's infinite milking in the first-person levels. Duck and shoot so your shot ends up in the middle of the rightmost bomb deposit. You can shoot all the bombs and a couple soldiers for around 10,000 each time. You'll actually gain lives by doing this. :o

But those stages have a visible timer? I don't get it...

You'll get another extend and then some to replace the one you just lost. Eventually you can gain extends from doing this.

Think we can add Super Contra here?

Ah, right. Nice find.

1,459,700 - zinger - 2 - MAME :)

I was actually aiming for an all clear but then I messed up on the stage 2 boss who went berserk after a while and got me. Oh well enough of this shit, let's move on to Super Contra!

First credit, I'll be back for more. Did you notice if there's any timers this time around?

Yes. After waiting around too long some orb will come from the bottom of the screen. If soldiers start spawning behind you that means that it's a good idea to start moving. I don't think there's an overall timer but it's based on scroll.

Shouldn't you be starting a new thread for Super Contra?

Also, one of you needs to review these games, either at length or briefly...

None of the threads would get much action, I think collective threads for less popular games is better (less popular to play for score that is).

It's not a matter of action. It is a matter of neatness. I want the site to be set up all nice and tidy, so that in the future it will be able to accommodate as much action as necessary and still be easy to navigate. So what if that means a billion threads with two posts each? Have you never looked into the "news" subforum?
